Those Esses are the scariest section of the whole track. The dip in the pavement caused the car to loose its traction so when they came to the bottom of the slight hill with the wheel turned it sent them flying
@cdawg1113 dude, don't call him a dumbass. Anybody would be shitting their pants if they crashed too. And wtf?!? "thats why you get cheap cars to race" I could list a million reasons why NOT to race cheap cars. Official racing on tracks were STARTED with expensive cars. Good Lord.
as long as the aluminum framing isnt damaged too bad it shouldnt bee that big a deal to fix. 10 grand for the bodywork, replacment pannel, lights, mirror, and sofourth... i would count yourself lucky... (15k actually bc im sure there is some underbody damage... 20k if it needs serious work and 30-write off if the frame is damaged...)
@lasertools1 Driver error. Plain and simple. He went in too hot, got offline and lifted off the throttle. Off throttle oversteer is a bitch sometimes :-). He should have stayed in it, driven through the grass and entered back at the top of the esses.
@robweenerpi ohhh i see that would do it ya you gota stay on the to keep the ass planted down well that viper was going good cause it was going close to that speed and i know viper of that style tend to to lose it lol
I love how they turned off the sound so you don't hear the dude cussing incessantly. What a great way to, you know...... RUIN THE GOD DAMNED VIDEO YOU ASS.
I love VIR, and have driven 3 DEs there. I can totally see making that mistake. I feel bad for him. I noticed he isn't shifting. Doesn't look like that would be as much fun as a stick.
i can only guess that he lifted just after cresting the hill on turn 7. rookie mistake - we have all done it, but in a mid-engine car, car be really hard to recover. too bad, but the damage was so minimal. more ego bruise than actual mechanical damage.
From this vide I can say vow. He is fast at least on roller coaster. And the car actually doesnt look that bad as I thought. He made mistake but hey in this spot almost every event somebody do the same thing. Best thing is go strait not to try steer bc then you end up like this facing wrong way in tire wall. +1 for great lesson. BTW: I can wait to be back 6 more days
Oh and just so you know, the place where he loses control is a turn where the car actually sort of lifts off the ground, i can feel it at about 125-130 and hes running around 150, AT LEAST.
Have any of you guys actually ever driven this track?!
I have. several times. Maybe not in an R8, but in my 03 svt cobra...there's a large difference I realize, but this track is extremely difficult. there is a TON of elevation change.
This video is better because at least it shows him driving well throughout the rest of VIR. His lines looked good through most of the lap. But his entry point and early apexes through the esses were just wrong. If he hit his apexes later, but at the same speed, he would've been fine.
I will say it is a very difficult thing to run your own line with another car right in front of you. While the short video gives the impression of a rich boy who can't drive, this one counters that a little...
I cant belive people are saying hes an idiot for crashing? every pro driver has crashed at least once. Its what makes you a better driver. If you have ever been to vir you should know that even stock miatas can hit upwards of 100mph on that strait. he was most likely at 130-140 its hard not to make a mistake at that speed.
he did a common thing...he was following the line of the car in front of him without concentrating on his car...late turns are a result of following lines!
he went in to hot and there is a little elevation right there. once you go over that little hill the suspension unloads and obviously there is no grip. so turning over that hill at that speed is fail.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this guy is a fucking idiot. Went to hard into an s without swinging wide and he expects the car to pull through, he thinks he's driving a motorcycle and he's following the track curvature too much. Another rich boy with a 200,000$ sports car who doesn't know how to drive. Big shocker
I've gone off course at VIR too and can say that it happens so fast that there is not really a whole lot you can do. As soon as that back end started to come out, the driver turned into nothing more then another passenger.
i jus say he shoulda stayed in the gas and locked it to the left after the initial spin and then he woulda got close to the wall but not hit it (more likely) or he shoulda got wing or spoiler for the backend and make it harder to loose it
If you lose it and spin then "both feet in" (the clutch and brake). You'll stop sooner and slide in a straight line. If you are out of control, but try to regain control (that is, regain traction) guess what happens when traction is restored? The car takes off in whatever direction it's facing when traction is regained--like into oncoming traffic. Once you've lost control lock up the brakes and slide out of the way!
In a spin it is better to go both feet in ... yes. Trying to steer out in a mid engine car is a bad idea. They teach you this in advanced racing school as well
Sorry man, That sucks. Looks like the car became unweighted over the hillcrest. Unless you know what you are doing, trying to steer your way out of trouble is a bad idea. Both feet in (clutch/Brake) is the safest bet.
Dont listen to the shoulda, coulda, woulda's
You did the right think by putting the car in tail first. - I am a DE instructor for 3 different clubs.
he's referring to AFTER control is lost. you go past 90 degrees, or have tankslapped 3 times and you are done - "both feet in" is what is taught virtually everywhere in that situation. It slows the car the fastest (although grass rarely does any significant slowing) and maintains a predictable path for others to avoid you.
i am glad no one was hurt...this is why you race on a track and not on the streets. It could have been much worse though. the damage was not that extensive, be grateful for that.
Did a track worker clear you to go back on track? Then he drives the race line, didn't think of the possibility of losing fluids? Endangering other drivers? At the ACNA event Apr21/22 a 911TT driver lost a oil line, continued for a whole lap on the race line in rainy conditions, I was 5 cars behind it was like driving on ice.
I left that same corner doing 110 but went right stopping only in front of the braking marker at turn 11, no damage did the next lap at 115 in a stock Audi B6S4 wagon.
Ya, I was amazed the idiot had the nerve to drive back on the track without even checking to see if anything might fall off or is leaking. I hope he got banned from the track until he learns track etiquette.
I thought it was ganna b worse then that

"Please don't hit the wall, please don't hit the wall. Fuck!"
And yeah, he had to have lifted his foot off the gas. Weight shift over that small bump.
Not too much of damage gladly. Looked like a harder hit than it actually was, thought it'll cost him quite a bit to fix it. Poor bastard.

That happened quick!
The driver of the R8 wasn't bad, just was driving beyond his limit (obviously).
Can't say I would have pulled out of that one, but then again I probably wouldn't have been pushing my $100k+ car that hard either.
Sorry bout his luck, but thanks for posting the video; it helps teach us all a lesson about the risk of DE event driving.
It takes courage to open yourself up to public scrutiny.
I hope everything works out for him in the repairs.
Thanks again.

Tell Your friend he should sit closer to the steering wheel! Or adjust the steering wheel if still possible.
He sits way to far behind.
No Chance of correcting in time. And he should keep his hands in the quarter to three position as long as possible.
Nice car will be easily fixed due to the tires in place..
25three 3 years ago 3
Damnit Tim! The damage isn't as bad as I feared. It sucks but fortunately can be fixed easily, and nobody was hurt.
fastdreams 3 years ago 4
Hey! I hope you get your car fixed soon and you bring us more in-car videos!
You should have steered the other way opposit lock once you started sliding backwards in the grass.
Though you need to be a racing driver to make the correct steering inputs when sliding backwards towards a wall!
Judging afterwords is easy...
