That's generally, but not always true. If a person has highly contrasting times in life, in literature it is often spoken of "die Leben." Same with a strict biological meaning: "this could save millions of lives" is also in German "das könnte Millionen von Leben retten", but which is, of course, just the very next time "DAS Leben Unschuldiger" again.
Haha, poor Axel, I love his expressions. I guess he must have told another bad joke sometime, at the end of the movie he's sitting behind Wiesler sorting mail.
i have a question...hope u understand both english n german...i thoughtt the title of the movie shud have been DIE Leben der Anderen, becoz Anderen is plural. then how come it is DAS Leben der Anderen??
"Das Leben der Anderen", strictly speaking is "The life of the others". The english title "The lives of others" I would translate as "Die Leben anderer". Or you could have what you suggest: "Die Leben der Anderen"/"The lives of the others". Each of those versions is correct (unless you become very picky and say, there are many others and they have many lives, so lives should be plural in either language ...). I think they just went with what sounds best in either launguage.
thank u for that....i used to score badly in german to english translations....now i understand that what is right in one language might become slightly 'twisted' in another....thank u all the same.

2nd Lt. Stiegler should have said, " The moral of the story is, when the sun went to the West, it became a typical desrespectful asshole."

Hat einer von Euch auch schon mal bemerkt, dass auffällig viele Männer, die Axel heißen, einen Nachnamen haben, der mit einem "Sch"-Laut anfängt?
Ob die Eltern- bzw. die Drehbuchautoren- unterbe-
wusst das Wort "Achselschweiß" nachempfinden wollen?

For those who rely on the subtitles:
What is the difference between Honecker and a telephone?
None. Aufhaengen. Neu waehlen.
(two meanings for both sentences.) Aufhaengen:
Hang up the telephone.
Hang Honecker by the neck til dead.
Neu waehlen:
Dial a new number.
Elect a new leader.

@mtp15481
becaus in german and also in english there is no plural of "Leben"
it´s nothing that exists odr that you can touch.
It´s the same like "luck"(Glück) or "valor"(Mut)
