Saw the Stones perform this at the after-SARS concert at Downsview in Toronto. I thought it was a peculiar song, rather out of place in the concert, but oddly touching. I've always had greater respect for Richards after hearing him perform this. He's a very sentimental and deeply feeling artist.
...and Hoagy Carmichael calling Keith up six months before he croaked, telling Keith that he really dug Mr. Richards' interpretation of his song. Reminded Hoagy of how the song went through his head when I first played it.
there are two versions of him singing this, this one is the hardest to find and the better one. if anyone has any information about the difference please let me know, recording dates etc....
According to Keef's recent autobiography ("Life"), Hoagy Carmichael called him 6 mos. before he died and complimented him on this version - said it was exactly what he had in mind when he wrote it. I find it pretty compelling. As for voice quality, consider the likes of Dylan or Leonard Cohen. It's got soul, for sure.
The emperor has no clothes. All the raving about Keef's awful croacking by his fanboys is hilarious. This sound exactly like a pathetic drunken homeless bum trying to impersonate Frank Sinatr. In fact was a middle-aged, millonaire rockstar full of hubris, in the belief that he could do this type of material justice.
@oliaiguambfigues76 I have some sympathy with this viewpoint, but people like keith and so in turn like his music. I think it's that simple. Your favourite actor can do little wrong, your favourite "rock star" likewise.
Long live Keith. Given more people more pleasure then most ever will.
@oliaiguambfigues76 wow feel better now? Either you like Keith's vocals or you don't. In fact I am sure Keith is well aware that he is NOT ole blues eyes. And thank GOD he is not! One Frank is enough and one Keith is enough as well.
@notoriousvic Yes, Keith was real pleased that Hoagy liked it and drank a rum drink to celebrate that Hoagy had mentoned to him. Keith's pleasure only warms you to him further. I'm in such a Stones (and Keef) phase it's not true - I just love them.
I love Keith Richards, and he is my favorite guitarist in the world! Unfortunately, cigarettes and drugs have harmed his voice which I hate! His voice used to be far better than Mick Jagger's, and I do have to point out that I like very few slow songs. I just finished his wonderful autobiography LIFE, and I am in the process of re-reading it. I have seen the Rolling Stones six (6) times, one of the greatest parts of my life, and they are the greatest rock and roll band in the world!
I love Keith Richards and he is my favorite guitarist in the world, but cigarettes and drugs have ruined his voice. His voice used to be better than Mick Jaggers, but I still love him anyway. I just finished his wonderful autobiography LIFE.
I've trawled youtube finding everything Keith mentions in his book, and I've loved it all. I'm going to write him a letter one day and just say 'thankyou Keith, thanks for everything'.

Not a perfect voice, but that makes it sound very natural. Andthe feelings he puts behind it more than make up for any imperfection. Very captivating and heart-warming. I dare to say he may even be better than Mick.
man, anyone got a copy? This shit is out of print, sure it was a short run, my god I have listened to all songs on the tube, can I get a copy...this is really the best, I am old, well 38, old, but I am always filled with the bumps of the goose with this shit....doesnt matter, really, just good it is here. I will not go into this period, any period, period keith kicks ass period...anyhow, just glad this audio still posts.
@airevault I agree wholeheartedly with what you are saying. Keith might appear rough and rowdy, but inside of him you'll find a tender, loveable person. Pure gold.

The "hideous croaking" voice is exactly what makes the song nice. Nat King Cole couldn't make the song sound nicer.

Keith's whiskey laden vocals on a heart-warming piano should be a genre of it's own. Sorta reminds me of Tom Waites.

Sounds like he's been listening to Bob Dylan's singing. Lots of inflection, he keeps it interesting.

I love Keith's treatment of these country songs. His piano playing has real soul behind it. His vocals, real heartbreak. I love it.
