any pipe over 20 inches NEVER fits perfect... I.D/OD fittin it just doesnt work, skill, a set of doggs, and a god damn grinder, a true welder, uses 3 grinders;)
@st00pidity Poorly fit joint, sometimes things don't fit just right and you have to be smart enough to make it work. Some prints call for a weld and grind before more beads are laid. Gas issues from gun problems, wind, etc. Some difficult joints in repair need a weld and grind step to be welded. I'm a professional fabricator. I see great welders lay dog turds now and then. We're humans, not machines so it happens. The good welders know a bead isn't up to snuff and make it right.

@pantiesoup I recently graduated a welding school back in october of this year, and unfortunately i understand that new guys aren't really gonna get the first shot at a welding position. I've been looking for a while now, and still can't find even an entry level position. It's hard and pretty discouraging, but, I went to school to do what I love to do, but haven't the slightest clue as to where to begin to prove to someone I can do the job. Any tips?
@welder4life11 first where do u live and do u have a journymen ticket? it is hard to get a company to hire u with litte experience. the best way to get a company to hire u (ie. welding shop) is to go in there with the attitude that u are willing and able do do more than just weld (ie. sweep floors, clean the shop, even clean the washrooms, be vary helpful to other co workers, never dog fu*k, and be there everyday on time. be there to work not to weld and it will come all in time trust me!
There is fitter wrench turner boilermaker , and there is a true boilermaker welding boiler tubes,it takes a skilled welder to tig out 2 inch tubes 1 inch apart

So why would you make fun of people who lay down to grind? I think they do it because they work 14 hr shifts and capitalized on taking a load off their feet. They're stillgettin the same shit done. i dont know if you stand up while you grind to look all tough and manly for all the other boys on the worksite but i have a feeling your just looking for some dick while your in camp. Man more pipe welders who just stand around while some else does the real work. Im surprised they dont have it in there contract for the helper to go to the outhouse with them to wipe there fucking ass. Anybody with any decent skills can do a TIG root and weld 6010 with 7018 so please stop acting like you guys are great cause you wouldnt last outside your little piping world which is all most of you know how to do. Try some real fabrication work you no real skills.

Even a mediocre pipe welder has a hand to help prep and pre heat,(the grinder man). The best welder ever should have 2 or 3 hands, and be smoking a cigarette after 2 or 3 rods burnt..........asshole! I wish I could meet you, and see what I'm doing wrong after 22 years self employed.
