@zimmyzimgir2 Go listen to the SMiLE demos of 1967 and then the 2004 version Brian brought out. One of my favorite albums! Perhaps not as brilliant as Sgt Peppers. Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys beats everything ever made.
@zimmyzimgir2: You know nothing about music history. The original Smile was scrapped and this replaced it. Boy, are you dumb, girl. And yet, Brian shows his genius on this album.
@pmoyer50 In fact, this DID become the 'answer' to Sgt Pepper. Despite the 'myths' surrounding 'Smile', it was abandoned due to 'Sgt Pepper' . Brian said himself ' I felt I couldn't compete anymore'. All the people praising Brian for his 'genius' on Smiley Smile need to do their research. He had very little to do with Smiley Smile. Capitol were pushing for an album and the other BB's took the available 'doodles' and actually turned it into a album, writing songs in the process. Credit to them
@ipolson: You are correct, however, certain songs like "Fall Breaks into Winter" have his mark of genius on it with the Woody Woodpecker's "ha ha ha ha . . . ha" hidden inside. The only reason Sgt Pepper came out before the original intended Smile was because all the flak he was receiving from the band and mostly from the ultimate moron, Mike Love. The Smile released in 2004 was fantastic. There are copies of the original Smile out there and they are true to form in what was intended.
@pmoyer50: Funny you should mention 'Fall Breaks into Winter' and Mike Love. I remember how disappointed me and my brother were (and a lot of people) were when Pet Sounds came out and there were instrumentals on it. This from a group who were purely a VOCAL group, who didn't even play on the records. We considered instrumental tracks 'fillers' in those days, and I think maybe that is one reason why PS didnt do so good, but of course in time things become 'legend' and 'masterpieces'
@ipolson: Pet Sounds was a breakthrough album and was far ahead of its time. When Paul McCartney heard it, he exclaimed that it was the greatest rock album ever made. It was the inspiration for Sgt Pepper. Every major artist from Bob Dylan to Neil Young were blown away by the album. Artists and people, or in other words listeners usually grow up. Life would be boring hearing about hotdogs, cotton candy and lollipops all the time. If you were disappointed by Pet Sounds you have no musical taste.
@pmoyer50: Yes, everything you say is sort of correct (although only McCartney praised it, not Lennon or Harrison). Yes, in HINDSIGHT, it became this good album. All I am saying is that on the day of release, a lot of people were disappointed with it, as it was a departure from the previous album 'Summer Days..'. Just look at the poor sales. Its a FACT, which even the BB themselves acknowledge. No musical taste ? well, you cannot prove that can you ? Actually I am a musician.
@ipolson: I reciprocate, by saying that nearly everything you said is sort of correct. Lennon did praise it. After he heard it, both he and Paul McCartney called up Brian Wilson to tell him how much they loved it. Yes, it was a departure from their 'Summer Days and Summer Nights'. All that indicated was exponential growth on Brian's part. The poor sales was mainly due to Capitol Records making it very difficult for fans to buy the album. Do your research, bub.
@pmoyer50 : let me c orrect you. It was not 'difficult' to buy the album. It was fully available (in the UK anyway), and I bought it on day of release. Such were the poor sales that I seem to recall Capitol rushed out 'Best of The Beach Boys instead', or certainly promoted that instead. I have every interview by The Beatles, and do not recall any evidence that JL called Brian Wilson. Paul yes (he hung out with Brian a lot and gave him a sneak preview of 'She's Leaving Home' )
@ipolson: Across the proverbial pond, it was difficult to purchase. There are cases of record store owners from that time period going on record to say it was so hard to get Pet Sounds for their stores that they personally had to call Capitol Records to complain. Capitol's response was the unbelievable, "why would you want that"? The UK had better taste. I used the latest book on Smile and Brian Wilson's book titled, 'Wouldn't it be Nice' as a reference. Please accept my apology for the insults.
@pmoyer50 : My musical taste is far too wide and large to discuss here, not that that is anything to do with anything. You are typical of people who, when presented with a fact, start insulting people you do not even know. I have every track ever released by the BB (inc many not released), and I was there when it came out,
it was nothing to do with the 'growing up content'.
@ipolson: You are typical of people who state facts . . . which aren't. I was in my tweens when they came out. Brian Wilson was getting the "other" sounds that the Beatles weren't getting yet. And I loved the Beatles, too. It's too bad that Brian didn't dump the extremely negative Mike from the group. Maybe then, the original Smile would have come out when it should have. There is a reason the Beatles wanted to hear the Smile recording tapes back before Sgt Pepper was released. And they did!
@pmoyer50: The facts (as stated by Brian !!!) are that he heard Rubber Soul, wanted to do an album that would match that (Pet Sounds) , then was influenced by the experimentation on Revolver to start Smile. Then, with all the in fighting, hassle etc, he couldnt finish it, Sgt Pepper came out and he gave up ! Now, tell me which part of this is incorrect, because I have the bloody interview from BRIAN himself ! You may not like it, but this is what HE says happened , so get over it . End
@ipolson: Correct you are about 'Rubber Soul' being the inspiration to do 'Pet Sounds' and 'Revolver' laying the groundwork for 'Smile'. Because of all the infighting, which primarily Mike Love was responsible for, caused the delay which allowed 'Sgt Pepper' to debut first. You were correct except for the fact that the friction Brian received was the biggest reason 'Smile' didn't come out as originally intended. Our difference is I tend to give the latter as the cause.
@ipolson: Van Dyke Parks was a genius and complimented the genius of Brian Wilson superbly. His lyrics were ahead of their time. They were groundbreaking words for groundbreaking music. 'Friends' had Brian all over it and the songwriting efforts with Al Jardine were excellent. Brian is the best. Of the remaining Beach Boys, I would have to say that Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston are the most talented. Dennis Wilson developed into a good songwriter. Carl Wilson wrote 'Trader'. Another good song.
@ipolson: Have you heard Al Jardine's solo album? 'Don't Fight the Sea' is a great song. His voice sounds as if he was still a twenty year old. For me, it has always been words and music. I especially like it when Brian worked with Gary Usher. Mike Love resented that and the same goes with Brian working with Van Dyke Parks. Brian was expanding and didn't care about "THE FORMULA". I'm glad he didn't. We would have missed out on some great songs. You evidently like the Beach Boys. You're good.
@pmoyer50: Hey, its all good and I agree with all you say. Dennis's album is still one of my favourites, and I also think that albums like 'Surfs Up' and 'Holland' didn't get the praise they deserved. Van Dyke Parks certainly had his own style with lyrics ! (Cabinesence being a good example) (love the banjo on that - nice touch) . Thanks, I'll check out Al Jardine's new stuff, he's one of my heroes.
@ipolson: Pacific Blue Sky is a great album. The album that came after 20/20 - what was that? It had, I think, 'This Whole World' 'Disney Girls' and 'Deirdre' etc. One of the members of Dino, Desi and Billy designed the cover for the BB's. It's hard to believe that 'Friends' was their worst selling album. What a shame! One of the most beautiful songs and a favorite of mine is 'Til I Die'. It was pure Brian Wilson. I find it hard to conceive that the other members didn't want it on the album.
@ipolson: Thanks. I was charging up my ipod on my computer and I couldn't check it. About 3 months ago I downloaded 'Sunflower" on my pod. For the life of me, I couldn't remember the name of the album. I guess it's part age and the medications I'm on. The memory powers seem to fade at times. The 'Today" album was excellent, too. When it comes to old BB's songs I love 'Don't Back Down'. One of the twofers offered let's us hear what the real Beach Boys sounded like on 'Dance Dance Dance'.
@pmoyer50: Yes, when I was growing up they definately had an effect on me. The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Lovin Spoonful and The Byrds. I grew up feeling that these guys talking to me via my tiny little transistor radio ! Good songs will always be good songs. So many good ones from early to late, like 'Warmth of the Sun' with that clever, chord progression in the 'wrong' order !. I sure miss the musical creativity of those times, and Brian was certainly one of the most inventive.
@ipolson: Transistor radios! They have become dinosaurs, too. I was in 8th grade when the Beatles came out. Those were magical times. I loved all the groups mentioned. The Kinks doing 'Waterloo Sunset" and 'Days' is poignancy at its best. Ray Davies was one of the most prolific songwriters and his clever earthy lyrics still stand. Ever hear the Who's 'The Who Sells Out'? Brian Wilson heavily influenced that album. It's almost a tribute with some of the songs included. Real good stuff in there.
@ipolson : Exactly the one. In between songs is the jingle, "Radio London reminds you go to the Church of your choice." It's a classic vocal endeavor with some great instrumentation, isn't it? We just celebrated the 4th of July. I'm not much of a flag waver since I came from the Vietnam era. Luckily, I didn't have to go over there. We really didn't win the Revolutionary War. It was basically England got worn down, much like in Vietnam or Afghanistan. I'm grateful for the English influence.
@ipolson: We have to agree to disagree. I have a tape of the original parts of the tracks as they were when abandoned. They are, to me, (and the radio commentator) disjointed, meaningless, bits and pieces. The project was going nowhere and, Brian knew it. Good old Van Dyke did a good job of hyping it over the years (he had a vested interest to do so ), but, as has been commented on over the years, even something like 'Wonderful' is very close to (some say a rip off) of 'Here There and Everywhere'
@ipolson: Dont get me wrong. I like 'Smiley Smile' for its laid back atmosphere and quirkyness, even though it contains very few 'completed' songs, apart from the singles and B Sides which had already been issued. But its mainly down to Mike Love and the other BB's that ANY album got completed at that time.
@yeahsee33 It's a corrupted version of "He Gives Speeches" from the SMiLE sessions. Basically this whole album is the result of Mike Love forcing himself in between Van Dyke and Brian and ruining most of the songs they created together while he had been away on tour.
PLEASE READ: IF U WANT TO HEAR SMiLE by THE BEACH BOYS, NOT BRIAN WILSON, GO 2 MY CHANNEL AND GO TO MY PLAYLISTS AND SELECT THE ONE THAT SAYS "Smile 1967(SMiLE)" it contains original recordings by the Beach Boys
While I enjoy the track in it's entirety, the first fifty-one seconds are bliss. It's depressing though, I wish I had someone to appreciate it with me. Most folks my age (16) listen to music solely out of social obligation. However, I suppose it's obscurity helps to weed the good people out. Not that the band is obscure, but this work in particular is to some extent. Predominantly, people associate the Beach Boys music with that little dick Mike Love's style.. The Wilson Bros ARE the Beach Boys.
@TorrinTheGreat Me and you both dude, I'm 17 and my Beach Boy fanaticism is met with complete in-difference by everyone I know. Even the Beach Boy fans I know are only aware of the 62-65 hits.
@TorrinTheGreat hmm, your comment+channel suggests you might enjoy this: watch?v=18Ua3pPr2gY . Also, those first 51 seconds would have fit brilliantly on SMiLE. So many incredibly gorgeous vocal arrangements on those bootlegs. Why, Mike Love? Why?
I'm really getting a kick outta this song. I haven't listened to Smiley Smile in such a long time! I truly love this album, it's so fun! I just love the progression in the beginning of this song. Oh Brian how I love you ;)

This song is terrible. The Beatles would never put out any crap like this. This is more like Godley Creme (albums L or Freeze Frame), but not as good as GC.
The Beach Boys destroy The Beatles in every possible way. Even at their simplest - a song like this, they blew the Beatles away. I'd like to see John, Paul or George come up with a melody half as good as the one in the first section of this song, let alone something like "Surf's Up" or "Heroes and Villains".
please people, get real, do some music research. there is no point in comparing the beatles and the beach boys at least in terms of who was better and who did what first. Here's a shocker, both groups were heavily influenced by each other and by a heck of a lot of other influences in those days. Both groups contributed phenomenal pioneering efforts to pop/rock and roll. Music would be incredibly different today without either. So please stop the uneducated bickering...
yeah i love that beginning melody. I just read an interview, Brian said it just didn't fit with what they were doing for 04. i think it's one of those songs that gives him bad vibes. and he wanted it to be happy.
Apparently the effect was created using a machine called an 'ELTRO Information Rate Changer' which could raise or lower pitch without affecting tempo and vice versa. It was also used for when HAL's rendition of 'Daisy' winds down in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
@hammerbrother it wasnt exactly speed up, its a delay with a saw wave modulation of delay time and 4 playheads fading in and out of one another to disguise clicks caused by the saw wave. that way, the pitch goes up but the speed remains the same.
"...I blew my mind, I blew my cool, I blew myself over"
I know Carl sings lead on this but if that lyric is not indicative of the huge turning point 1967 was for the songwriter, poor Brian, I don't know what is :(
How can you not love songs like this and the rest of Smiley Smile? I'm surprised to see so many negative comments - it's not Smile, and obviously I love the original tracks for Smile more, but these versions and songs have something all their own that can't be found on Smile.
@FruscianteLennon311 Don't put Kokomo down, that song is still amazing - not on a level with this or Brian's other works, but to totally put it down is wrong.
@RazrHack LOL! Oh let's not go overboard shall we? If you like "Dokomo" (yeah I noticed I just spelled it wrong, but I'm gonna keep it that way, lol), then fine. I personally can't stand it. Hated it then, hate it now. It's right up there with "The Pina Colada Song" by Rupert Holmes and "Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffett for me. El Lame-o Crap-o! But if you like it....
@MattHatter I don't think the comment can be taken seriously anymore. I made it 6 months ago when I was a relatively immature Beach Boys fan in that I hadn't been listening to them that long. I've really come to appreciate everything they did, Kokomo included, but I now confess that calling Kokomo "amazing" was a bit too generous.
Oh, the Holmes and Buffett songs are better than Kokomo by the way.
In one way that part is quite revolutionary, I don't think any artist had done that kind of recording before "Smiley Smile". Maybe Alvin and the Chipmunks, but they weren't artists, they were squirrells for crying out loud.

I have to disagree. I love this album but I would have to SGT Pepper's is light years above any other record in rock history. It is suprising that it is so popular. People don't like things they can't understand. Peppers and Pet sounds were so different but in a good way. This album is a great companion piece to pet sounds
I've heard the original SMiLE. And there was no She's Goin' Bald. And I don't think this album is mainstream, too. The best thing there is the medley Vegetables/Mama Says.
shes goin bald is just a reworked "he gives speeches", though its obviously going in a different direction than it would have had it been released on SMiLE
My hair is thinning after listening to this song for 45 years.

Karateworm 1 year ago
@TorrinTheGreat hmm, your comment+channel suggests you might enjoy this: watch?v=18Ua3pPr2gY . Also, those first 51 seconds would have fit brilliantly on SMiLE. So many incredibly gorgeous vocal arrangements on those bootlegs. Why, Mike Love? Why?

This song is terrible. The Beatles would never put out any crap like this. This is more like Godley Creme (albums L or Freeze Frame), but not as good as GC.

The Beach Boys destroy The Beatles in every possible way. Even at their simplest - a song like this, they blew the Beatles away. I'd like to see John, Paul or George come up with a melody half as good as the one in the first section of this song, let alone something like "Surf's Up" or "Heroes and Villains".
runnersdialzero33 2 years ago 3
@runnersdialzero33 Your rite but the Beatles are more rock & roll. That's why more kids have beatles on their ipods then the beach boys.
More people have beatles listening parties then the beach boys.
MrOdagled 1 year ago
the beatles were much more aggressively promoted than the bb by capitol.

@MrOdagled
Yes, I agree. And Brian can teach them how to be a genius. :-)
fasterthanbolt 1 year ago
please people, get real, do some music research. there is no point in comparing the beatles and the beach boys at least in terms of who was better and who did what first. Here's a shocker, both groups were heavily influenced by each other and by a heck of a lot of other influences in those days. Both groups contributed phenomenal pioneering efforts to pop/rock and roll. Music would be incredibly different today without either. So please stop the uneducated bickering...

jadorebri 2 years ago 2
That speed up of the tape is amazing, one of Brian's many experiments.
hammerbrother 3 years ago 15
Apparently the effect was created using a machine called an 'ELTRO Information Rate Changer' which could raise or lower pitch without affecting tempo and vice versa. It was also used for when HAL's rendition of 'Daisy' winds down in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
dominian42 2 years ago 2
@hammerbrother it wasnt exactly speed up, its a delay with a saw wave modulation of delay time and 4 playheads fading in and out of one another to disguise clicks caused by the saw wave. that way, the pitch goes up but the speed remains the same.
hwkerins 1 year ago
@hammerbrother And the beat through out it is consistant, never changing.
Genius of Brian Wilson!
woody2327 10 months ago

"...I blew my mind, I blew my cool, I blew myself over"
I know Carl sings lead on this but if that lyric is not indicative of the huge turning point 1967 was for the songwriter, poor Brian, I don't know what is :(
bobshenix 3 years ago
Actually I think this might be Brian singing after all... not sure does anyone know?
bobshenix 3 years ago
Every Beach Boy except Bruce (who was a beach boy at the time) sings a line
Mike & Carl: Silken hair more silken hair fell on her face and no wind was blowing...
Carl: Silken hair more silken hair lay near her pillbox down at her feet...
Dennis: I peeked in and when I saw she'd lost her hair, I thought I would tell her...
Al: When she saw her shiny forehead, didn't stop she swooned to the ground...
Brian: Cry so hard I blew my mind...
Mike: I blew my cool, I blew myself over...

How can you not love songs like this and the rest of Smiley Smile? I'm surprised to see so many negative comments - it's not Smile, and obviously I love the original tracks for Smile more, but these versions and songs have something all their own that can't be found on Smile.
runnersdialzero33 3 years ago 3
go listen to Kokomo if you want your poppy lame boring Beach Boys music. this is amazing, great and beautiful.
FruscianteLennon311 3 years ago 26
@FruscianteLennon311 Kokomo is lame but they're early, pre-Pet Sounds pop was good. But nothing after Smiley Smile or the hippie days.
BuyBenco 1 year ago
@FruscianteLennon311 don't hate on kokomo. just because you don't understand the influence doesn't mean it's lame and boring.
Kodama28 1 year ago
@FruscianteLennon311 Don't put Kokomo down, that song is still amazing - not on a level with this or Brian's other works, but to totally put it down is wrong.
RazrHack 10 months ago
@RazrHack LOL! Oh let's not go overboard shall we? If you like "Dokomo" (yeah I noticed I just spelled it wrong, but I'm gonna keep it that way, lol), then fine. I personally can't stand it. Hated it then, hate it now. It's right up there with "The Pina Colada Song" by Rupert Holmes and "Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffett for me. El Lame-o Crap-o! But if you like it....
MattHatter 4 months ago
@MattHatter I don't think the comment can be taken seriously anymore. I made it 6 months ago when I was a relatively immature Beach Boys fan in that I hadn't been listening to them that long. I've really come to appreciate everything they did, Kokomo included, but I now confess that calling Kokomo "amazing" was a bit too generous.
Oh, the Holmes and Buffett songs are better than Kokomo by the way.
RazrHack 4 months ago
@RazrHack No its not. Its awful! Love is/was a tool
sushilll111 3 months ago
@sushilll111 You know, in the seven months since I made that comment, I think I'd tend to agree with you now.

I hate the shanana parts and replacing the lyrics it would be a great song. The ending is quite good!
quad1951 3 years ago
shanana part is actually supposed to be a "Get A Job" by the Silhouettes and it was also sped up from the original speed.
smiley66goodvibes67 3 years ago
i love this song, but i think it could do without the "shananah" part when the pitch gets higher and higher
HIghFlyinByrd 3 years ago 2
In one way that part is quite revolutionary, I don't think any artist had done that kind of recording before "Smiley Smile". Maybe Alvin and the Chipmunks, but they weren't artists, they were squirrells for crying out loud.

I have to disagree. I love this album but I would have to SGT Pepper's is light years above any other record in rock history. It is suprising that it is so popular. People don't like things they can't understand. Peppers and Pet sounds were so different but in a good way. This album is a great companion piece to pet sounds

Shanana nana nana nanah (goin' bald)... One of the worst things they ever recorded. Luckily this thing wasn't originaly planned on Smile.
avialableman 3 years ago
I think it had done well on that album too. If you haven't heard SMiLE, I can tell you that it isn't 100% mainstream either. ;-)
Alixx2 3 years ago
I've heard the original SMiLE. And there was no She's Goin' Bald. And I don't think this album is mainstream, too. The best thing there is the medley Vegetables/Mama Says.
avialableman 3 years ago
She's Goin' Bald was demoed in some form during the SMiLE sessions, as "He Gives Speeches".
PoprocksCk 3 years ago 3
Possibly. Demoed. But as far as I know, Brian never planned to include it in his albums... at least, this version of Smile.
avialableman 3 years ago
shes goin bald is just a reworked "he gives speeches", though its obviously going in a different direction than it would have had it been released on SMiLE
HIghFlyinByrd 3 years ago 3
According to Wikipedia, Brian thought "He Gives Speeches" was junk and discarded it.
himself801 3 years ago
@avialableman During Smile, the song was recorded as 'He Gives Speeches', with different lyrics.
