I just found inkscape today and was looking for a replacement for flash and this is an excellent tool in my opinion. One of the things I really like is that it exports to png which is a must being a indie game developer. Keep up the great work fellas :)
I think this Tutorial is too complicated & outdated. There are many easier and more flexible tools to create such a animation. The only good thing about Inkscape is that being Opensource. The User Interface sucks and simple graphics are already very slow. Sadly its the only Tool we have on Linux, and thats the only reason why I'm using it :(
So instead of using vector SVG animation we're converting it into Raster PNG's then converting that to flash which may or may not be vector again... I'm sorry but iOS doesn't suport flash, and flash mobile was just killed so this is useless for the mobile market, where as svg animation isn't.
I'm using vista 32 bit. i couldn't get interpolate to work at all. i followed slow. is vista the problem? also, i couldn't get png2swf to install properly.
. You will find Ubuntu easy to use and much more up to date than vista. Yes it is free, as is inkskape, Inkskape works much better in Linux, like all open free software.
Hey mate, awesome video, only thing is, I think you spent a little too long on the exporting and not enough detail went into the conversion process at the end. Would be awesome if you could talk me through the end process, cheers mate
Good tutorial, but a lengthy export process. I just made one box/background for each frame, and spread them out a given amount, kinda like a storyboard. I did the interpolations in the first box, then distibuted them all out the same amount as above, so each object went in each 'frame' in the right place. Then you can just select all the 'frames' (boxes) and batch export them as individual pngs. Hope that makes some sense :)
Beyond the number of available colours, variable transparency (alpha), and better compression, it is also a W3C recommendation. GIF is not. Why would you use GIFs?
I love Inkscape, and look forward to it gaining *real* animation capabilities, but what you're doing is the least efficient way to make an animation. Use Synfig for if you want a real open source animation tool. It's not as slick as Adobe Flash, but it's a lot better than manually creating each frame by hand.

steps to follow:
1) select first text object, apply path > object to path
2) ungroup, keep selection
3) path > combine
4) repeat for second text object
5) apply interpolation

i want a tutorial about the intro of your video!!!!!

Hi, when I try to redo that with Inkscape 0.47 it doesn't work with texts. :(
I was just able to interpolate "real" objects like circles and rectangles.

worldemar42 2 years ago
It does, but IE does not support SVG. This demo is a practical solution...

Try the FREE program Serif Draw plus 4 - It is a simple animation program with loads of functions. (you add frames)
You export as a GIF

Why not just use GIFs if it's not vector based? Just for more colors?

I'm not looking up on this video, but can assume now that this is "animated png" which I now know of and is awesome.
