das ist ein BOXKAMPF- im Gegensatz zu dem was sich heut so alles Weltmeister nennt und uns alle mit niveaulosem Firlefanz langweilt-schaut Euch gut an wie sie aussah die "gute alte Zeit" a unforgotten great fight - they gave the BEST they had!!!
The worst part was, Leonard wouldn't grant Hagler a rematch -- which is customary given the controversial decision - by of course, Sugar Ray knew he would lose. Again.
At 5:12, the announcer cracks me up! "Flashy combination, but only one of the punches landed". Uhm, loser, 5 punches landed! Hagler got his ass handed to him in this fight.
Anybody who thinks this fight was fixed, Hagler was robbed, etc., is a fool. Sugar Ray Leonard beat Hagler's ass into the ground. Enough said. Get over it!
Standing and trading with a prime Hagler would have been suicide for anyone. He can take it and dish it out like no other. Sugar fought the smart fight, and what he did here is really the only way to 'beat' Hagler. Brawling with him is definitely something you do NOT want to do.
hey thanks DUDE for the news flash, duh it`s clearly a fighting style. your mom must be so proud. if the little punchs are in efective, they do not score, are you with me so far. those little fwap fwaps sugar scared was throwing and then running, were annoying at best,. now ill say it again; in that era especially, you had to bring the fight to a champion to get a dissision. if you let the judges decide, you had to win desisivly. that was clearly not the case here. hey but thanks for THE "STYL
hagler should have won! you must beat a champion to win, not run like sugar scared. his camp payed extra money for a larger ring, and different gloves; why, so he had more room to run in. pussy
hagler was robbed. this is why hagler retired from boxing, horrible decisions by moron judges who were in love with leonard. leonard couldnt hold haglers jock strap.
The title of this video should be "Sugar Ray Leonard runs from Marvin Hagler". I hate Leonard; he fights like a bitch. He was always scared of Hagler and only came out of retirement to fight him because he thought Hagler was done. What a fag move to challenge someone when you think they are out of their prime. He still couldn't stand toe to toe with him. The judges were out of their mind to score rounds to a guy who ran the whole round and threw pitter patter punches.
@brooklyntrini1 Remember that when you see that lil bitch Gayweather. Hagler and Chavez were sadly the last of a great breed called FIGHTERS. They belong at the pinnacle of the history.
@brooklyntrini1 He wasn't running, it's called boxing, you can't expect a skilled technical boxer like Leonard to sit there and fight the other man's fight. If he did then there would be no point in boxing, boxing's about hitting, and not being hit. Not about standing toe to toe with someone until one of them can't fight anymore.
@iskate547 What are you watching? Look at round 8 he just ran and barely threw any punches. Leonard will always be a bitch in my book. He always ducked fights; first Aaron Pryor where Leonard moved up a weight class to avoid him. Then retiring to avoid fighting Hagler in his prime and only coming back out because he thought Hagler was washed up. If you want the belt you have to take it not pitter patter combinations and running.
@brooklyntrini1 lol@moving up in weight to fight Marvin Hagler. yet he was scared... He offered Pryor a fight and Pryor declined because he felt he was worth more.. ORLY? since when pryor? Leonard just beat Hearns and Fought duran twice and won Olympic Medals. Who knew of Pryor? and Pryor hadnt fought Alexis at that time either. Your logic loses.
@InternationalBoy You sir have no knowledge of the sport or concept in human behavior. I am going to have to ask you to no longer post on boxing videos as you may corrupt others with your ignorance. Ray Leonard never made an offer or attempt to fight Pryor. He also came out of retirement to fight Hagler because he felt the champ had deteriorated (He has stated this on several occasions). Even with Haglers so called deterioration Ray Leonard was still afraid and fought like a bitch.
@brooklyntrini1 sorry smart ass, But its been well documented that He offered Pryor a fight you are the only moron who was under a rock when this all went down. He offered Pryor a fight and wanted the Lions share and Pryor declined. You are probably one of those cornballs who watched the HBO series legendary nights and got fooled off that press conference and thought that was it for the story. Sorry bro You were wrong.
@brooklyntrini1 and even still a Detriorated Hagler> a Nobody Pryor. So your logic still fails. And yes i know he fought marvin when he felt he was ready to. Whats the big deal? Leonard hadnt fought anybody in 4 years and was less than stellar in his performance against a Tomato can. Matter of fact the odds were 4 to 1 in favor of Hagler So nobody gave leonard a chance in hell. You just mad cause Leonard out boxed him. You expected Hagler/Hearns and got your feelings hurt, lol@you.
I met Marvelous Marvin years ago and when I asked him about this fight, he simply shrugged his shoulders and with quiet dignity said "that fight was the reason I quit". I don't blame him. Style won over substance. Hagler was stiffed!
23 years later and I'm still pissed with this decision. The commentary by Tim Ryan and particularly Gil Clancy leans so heavily in favour of Leonard you have to wonder if they were on Leonards payroll.I sugest you score the fight without those two guiding your observances.Every now and then I plug the tape in and score the fight Hagler got ripped off.Hagler retiring for good after this fight is one of if not the most admirably enegmatic actions of any athlete I can recollect Marvelous!!!
@kevindlinc Man your'e right I hate fucking commentary because it does change your perception of the reality of whats happening. I always watch fights with out sound. Too bad theres not a way to opt out of the mic feed by these assholes. I also think the so called punch stats are pure bullshit. Hagler was royally fucked over here. Leonard knows it and thats why I lost all respect for his bitch ass.
I was a Sugar Ray Leonard fan and was thrilled that he won this fight. At the time, I felt Leonard had won it 6-5-1. Now, after the passage of time, I have changed my opinion regarding round 10. Instead of it being even, I give the round to Hagler, changing my scorecard to 6-6. IMO, Leonard fought a great fight that night, but didn't do quite enough to lift the title from Hagler.
@TheBlueWhale011 Sorry to bust your bubble of make believe but Hagler beat the shit out of Leonard in every exchange. When he did get hit he didn't as much as blink but stayed with his workman like assault. Remember Hagler's body and mind had been conditioned to a 15 round fight and he did not realize the urgency. If he had gone into a 13th round he would have put Leonard away. Leonard was treated for exhaustion after the fight a fact that has been surpressed by media.
You love boxing, well learn the history. Sugar Ray Leonard had 1 fight in 5 years going in to this fight against a 160 pounder who had not lost in 12 years.
Rays last fight at his peak was against Bruce Finch in 1982
Hagler beat the crap out of Leonard, but....this was a boxing match and Leonard out boxed Hagler. I saw this fight live on PPV, and have it on Laserdisc. As much as I admire Hagler, Leonard out boxed and out foxed him with his flurries in the final seconds of the rounds.
Running ain't "boxing." You can't move in reverse the whole damn fight landing butterfly kisses and win a pro boxing match. Or at least you shouldn't be able to. This wasn't Olympic boxing and those light little fluury punches don't count for much. They landed mostly because they weren't effective scoring punches and Hagler didn't care.
Hagler was robbed. The only reason that they GAVE it to Leonard was he was more marketable.
@Rpanoz Right on the chin. You are correct sir. Leonard was the commercial hit, Hagler was the fighters and true fans winner of that fight, and theres no doubt about it.
I think everyone that dissed MMH in this thread should get a clue. I had Hagler winning this fight due to his aggression and body shots.
True, Hagler made some promotional and tactical mistakes.
Here's a question: Do ya think FMJ is gonna win vs PM runnin like Leonard did??? Nope, this is what i'm sayin, today Hagler would have won a UNANIMOUS decision. Why? Because dat's what boxing needs to get more fans....aggressive "fuck off and die" with steel chin attitudes. I miss Hagler. PBF win
Hagler spent his entire career trying to lure smaller men into the ring to fight him and when the last of the small men got into the ring he got owned in a fight that will forever haunt his legacy.
If he had gotten beat by Hearns then it still would have been an embarrassment but atleast Hearns was active and close to his prime,Leonard was a good five years past his prime with only one fight in five years.
the Leonard of 87 would never have beaten the monzons and hopkins but he beat hagler
Hagler was naturally the bigger men and started at a higher weight class than both of them, while Hagler was calling out Benitez,Hearns and Leonard,Michael Spinks was calling him out and suprise suprise,no answer from the Hagler camp.
Any just judge would award Leonard the decision as he outboxed Hagler and in many ways exposed Hagler's limitations as the "seek and destroy" fighter that he is usually(and inaccurately) portrayed as.
@syrandon Your really full of shit: Spinks would not have lasted 3 rounds against Hagler and he only called him out because he knew Hagler was intent of dominating the Mids and had absolutely intrest in the move up.
perhaps, but hagler and leonard were on of the best fighters in their division off all times. so, its a unbelievable fight, but hearns vs hagler was a crazy fight too!
Lets see SRL never hurt Hagler not once in the fight, SRL did showboat the last minute of each round, and yes the judges did earn there payOFF and give it to SRL
Since when was a fight judged on who hurt who? How many fighters hurt Hagler throughout his career?
Fights are scored upon a round by round system and in that system Leonard outboxed him over twelve rounds unless the hagler apologists simply close their eyes when their hero is getting hit with superior combinations by a washed up,inactive welterweight
Again are you crazy? Hagler agreed to so much to get the fight including a 12 round match (it would have been much harder to steal a 15 round fight), a 20 ft ring, Leonards gloves of choice ect Also Leonard immediately made it clear that there would be no rematch.
So i suppose Leonard losing to Duran (who was a blown up lightw8 fighting at welta for leonards crown) shows that hes a bum? A guy who could only steal fights and not win them?
Roberto Duran had already proven his worth as a welterweight in beating former champion Carlos Palamino.Duran was very much at his peak and was an active fighter,so the comparison isn't worthy.
Hagler was taking on an inactive, washed up welterweight who had fought only once in five years and receiving a larger portion of the purse to do so.Hagler was at no disadvantage as Leonard at that point had no business even lasting the distance.
damn i swear leonards fights are fixed...why is he always getting premature stoppages...he must be paying the judges & ref 2 favor him b-cuz he can't win on his own...some of his fights are suspect & debatable such as leonard-benitez (premature) leonard-hearns 1 (hella premature)..leonard-howard (definately premature)....now tell me he don't cheat his way 2 victory
leonard ant stupid to stand there and trade punches with some one stronger then him, when hagler is standing still he has is feet planted there for he has more power so leonard keeps moving so hagler cant plant his feet ,keeps hagler moving so there for hagler is in a way less powerful then if his feet is planted .hagler keeps going forward when hagler comes forward leonard hits him.BOXING IS ABOUT TECHNICAL .MORE TECHNICAL A BOXER MORE BETTER OF A FIGHTER HE IS!
well what happend when floyd mayweather boxed oscar de la hoya he fought a smart fight he knew oscar was more powerfull so he moved around but he got massive abbuse for it. or when oscar boxed tito trinidad?
Hagler should have won. Hagler was past his best, and that's why Leonard challenged him. Leonard admitted on an interview that he knew he couldn't hurt Hagler, but he could make it look like he was winning with hundreds of quick, weak, punches. They didnt do any real damage.
I think any real boxing critic can't confidently answer that question. Both such fantastic fighters, you can't split them. Gun to my head however, if writing a top 10 pound for pound they would both be around the 8, 9, 10 bit - possibly Leonard JUST pipping Hagler, based on Leonard being naturally slightly smaller then Hagler.
Hmmmmm.... yeeah I agree. Robinson is just Robinson. As Bert Sugar said when talking about the top 10 pound of pound fighters of all time - You have Sugar Ray Robinson and then the top 10 fighters of all time, in that Robinson was in a league of his own. Pernell was fantastic, theres a great bit of footage on YouTube of his Olympic final, pure Whitaker - if there was only Amatuer, Pernell could well be the greatest boxer ever. But I do agree with you about Robinson.
Emile Griffith was very good + is ranked as one of the best welters ever. In comparions with Leonard, I look at the facts. 10 defeats as welter, some to very average fighers, 4 at his peak v Paret, Benvenuti+ Napoles. I refuse to accept that Paret or Benvenuti were better than Leonard or Hearn.
112 fights? far too many, bad for the health...
Napoles was very good, but he never fought a boxer as good as Leonard Hearns Benitez or Duran. Hedgemon Lewis etc were well below these men...
How about Jimmy McClarnin? Approx. a 3rd of his fights were against 11 different HOFers, beating most of them at least once. Another great SRL is routinely ranked over...
Put SRL on Griff's schedule, fighting a cavalcade of quality welts and middles in a 15 yr period, and he'd have a lot more losses. Put Griff on SRL's schedule, starting out with a lucrative pro TV deal, hand-picked opponents and one superfight a year and he'd never have lost. And he'd do it all without the smoke and mirrors...
112 fights is far too many+ he clearly boxed for far too long. May in part explain some of his health problems.
A world class fighter now has 50 fights max
Leonard deserved all the money he got, a fantastic amateur boxer who was a stellar professional, beating some of the best fghters of all time in some of the greatest bouts. Boxing owes a massive debt to Leonard+Ali. They popularised the sport worldwide+ made multi-millionaires of all their great opponents..
Archie Moore had 200+ fights and was still in rude health late in life. Wilfredo Benitez had 50 odd and is now in a sorry state. Just the way it goes.
Griffith earned his stripes, taking on a who's who of welts and middles from his era, not like Goldy Ray who was effectively retired after 30 fights, claiming greatness for a few narrow wins over HOFers without rematches, and only returning for "superfights" which did little but pad his ego and bank balance.
You may well say SRL was "as good" as Napoles and Griffith and pick him to win fantasy fights against them, but he certainly didn't prove it. Their accomplishments and quality of opposition far exceeds his. Griff's 112 fights beating Paret 2/3, Tiger 2/2, Rodriguez 3/4, Archer 2/2, Nino 1/3, Briscoe, Fullmer, Moyer and at 36 y/o nearly beating a peak Monzon far surpasses Duran x1, Hearns x1, Hagler x1 and Benitez x1, all without relevant rematches.
Duran, too, had every physical disadvantage vs SRL and still thoroughly spanked him. I could never see Duran manhandling Griff the way he did Ray. Why do you think Ortiz never tried?
SRL might have had flash, but those shoeshiners aren't gonna bother Griffith. Griffith in his prime was a monster, possessing the jab (which was plenty quick, btw), the toughness and the pedigree to beat SRL. But give Ray a 24' ring, 12 rounds and at least one judge with a Bozo the Clown scorecard and who knows?
Duran was a more concussive puncher than Griifth as his KO record proves. As good as Duran was in Montreal Leonard adopted the wrong tactics+ tried to outfight Duran at close range. The second fight in Orleans+ Benitez-Duran = later Hearns Duuran showed the way to beat Duran was hit+ move, maintain distance. Duran only won 1/4 against those men. Griffith also could be outboxed. Won 2/5 v Paret, Napoles+ Benvenuti who I refuse to accept as being a better technical boxer than Leonard or Hearns..
Leonard fought the wrong fight?! And you moan about my excuses! Leonard had no choice but to fight that way. A Duran left hook in the 2nd round put him in orbit and after that he couldn't keep him off. Duran was too strong, too motivated to lose that night.
The key factor in II was Duran's condition, not SRL's tactics. Duran was a bloated slug whose training habits prior to the fight are well known, and his quitting had more to do with his lavatorial needs than anything SRL did.
I am not making any excuses. Montreal was Durans finest hour. He fought a very good fight, Leonard fought a good fight but the wrong fight. Duran should be credited for making Leonard fight that way.
However Leonard changed tactics completely in Orleans. Duran would have found Leonard difficult whatever condition he was in. Benitez later used similar tactics, was Duran out of condition then? Also Hearns used his big reach+ power advantage to KO Duran. How was Durans conditioning that night??!
As if the only factor in a fight is SRL's tactics. SRL fought the 2nd the way he'd have liked to fight the 1st, the difference was Duran's physical state. In the first he was too strong and motivated and forced SRL to fight his fight.
Duran's biggest problem in II was not SRL pulling funny faces but the 48oz of steak he'd wolfed down in the previous 12 hrs, having drained himself to make weight (he was 10lbs over 3 days before the fight). So when nature called, he had more pressing needs...
Well attested what Duran's training regimen was comical leading up to that fight. Only the SRL cultists believe it to be some kind of masterclass by Ray. Watch it, Ray didn't hurt Duran once & was running so fast at one point he almost tripped over his own boots. The best punch he landed was the bodyshot as Duran turned away
Like I said, Ray fought the 2nd the way he'd have liked to fight the 1st, but Duran forced him to fight his fight. The key factor was Duran's condition, not Ray's tactics.
Griffith was not a big puncher full stop. Of his 85 wins around 25 were by stopppage. He was routinely outpointing men long before the tragedy of the 2nd Paret fight. Griffith had already lost around 10 times at welter before moving up to fight at 160lbs+ there were losses to some fighters I have never heard of. Shorter man, shorter reach, slower, no knock out power... I simply cannot envisage him beating a peak Ray Leonard. Comparing them at 35 is silly, Leonard was effectively done at age 34
You're hammering Griffith for losses at the end of his career. You're even hammering him for a loss to Nino. Maybe he should have retired after fight II, that way fanboys could rank him untouchable like they do with SRL.
KO %s don't always equate to power. Anyone who knows a lot of him will tell you Griff held back after Paret. Don't be fooled though, Emile was well capable of putting hurt on the big boys. Were he the feather fist you're claiming he couldn't have dropped the Tiger like he did.
Most of Griff's losses came well into his 30s against the emerging middleweights of the 70s. Imagine how many losses post-prime SRL would have had he faced Nunn, Benn, McCallum, Jackson, Kalambay etc in the late 80s instead of his veterans' tour.
He's well capable of out-boxing SRL. You don't win 3 of 4 vs the slick Rodriguez or twice track down and beat the elusive Archer without stellar boxing skills. I don't see SRL KO'ing him or out-boxing him...
Griffith took on a much wider array of quality fighters than SRL did, usually several times, had more title fights, more HOF fights and had a far more storied career. Could SRL beat Tiger, Briscoe, Benvenuti? Could 35 y/o SRL go 15 with Monzon (and nearly win)?
These are the type of fighters the Golden Boy is routinely rated over, for no logical reason that I can see, unless bolo punches and a golden boy smile floats your boat.
Leonard is rated because of his superb skills+ charisma; but also there was the substance to beat not only the best fighters of that era but some of the best boxers of all time+ he looked great in doing it too! great combinations, upper body movement, Ali shuffles and bolo punches too.
Napoles, Benvenuti+ Griifth were good but I + most other boxing observers don't belive they were better than Leonard. I think you would have to go to to the orginal Sugar Ray to find a better welterweight..
"I think you would have to go to to the orginal Sugar Ray to find a better welterweight"
This is what I'm talking about. Many, many welts had far more storied careers than SRL, better records than SRL, beat better comp than SRL (numerous times), yet he gets rated over the lot, because of his golden smile and a handful of marquee wins over HOFers, the circumstances of which are often ignored, and all of whom Griff would have beaten with less trouble, imo.
We agree that Leonard + Hearns were better than the champions that succeded them. They were clearly better than those that immediately preceeded them: Benitez, Cuevas, Palmino. Even if you claim Napoles, Benvenuti+ Griffith were better; that still makes them top 10 probably top 5 which is all time great status.
Benvenuti was never a better boxer than Leonard or Hearns+ he won 2/3 v Griffifth, Napoles beat Griffth too. Leonard was at least as good as Napoles in my humble opinion..
The welt division dates back to the turn of the century, so dunno how SRL being better than the welts of the mid-70s and mid-80s makes him top 5.
Remember Nino was a middle, not a welt, and I thought Griff edged him in III. Ditto Paret II.
If a 135lber at the end of his prime could spank SRL, if Hearns could win most of the rounds they fought, and if Benitez could hold him in check, then the pre-Paret Griff who didn't hold back the way he did in later fights is more than capable of doing it.
Of the early fighters Mickey Walker, Barney Ross perhaps. Sugar Ray Robinson is number 1. Ray Leonard is up there too..
Duran was at his peak when he fought Leonard, the most dominant lightweight ever, 1 defeat in 7 yrs, brutally avenged. Even after his surrender in Orleans in 1980, he was good enough to eventually win 2 more world titles at higher weights + was the only man to take the great Hagler the distance during his illustrious reign at 160lbs.
good boxer but disrespectfull.joe calzaghie undefeated fought 4 present world champions pound for pound best boxer ever lived. to heavy for pig nose leonard but would av smashed him
calzhaghe is a fukin bum! undefeated? dats cos he spent ten years defendin a shitty wbo title against part timers. Jeff Lacy was shit so dat dusnt count, Bernard Hopkins and jones were in their forties, pasty their prime, and both knocked him on his arse, jones was half dead! the only decent win id give him is kessler, dats the only meaningful victory..Eubank was over the hill aswell. Hes not fit 2 even carry Leonard's jockstrap
what a farce hagler chase after him tha hole fight lennard on the back foot all the time'hagler was robbed, hagler the best middle,,hagler, robbinson, monson
If that fight had happened ONE YEAR earlier, Marvin would have knocked that bitch out. When Leonard saw that Marvin was older and slower in the mugabi fight, he decided he could do enough running about the ring and silly flurry punches on marvins gloves to "WIN" the title. One year earlier tho, and marvin would have knocked him out, but leonard wouldnt fight when hagler was in his prime.
The decision in this fight just shows the corruption in boxing. I wonder how much the judges were paid for their one sided view of this fight. There is no way on earth that a champion loses on a split decision like this one.
"You have to beat the Champ, to beat the Champ". Ever hear that said? Marvin could hav lasted the rest of the night, Loenard had the antics that made him the draw.
This fight was the beginning of the end for my interest in boxing. Thank goodness for the UFC.
Boxing fan since the dawn of Ali. This is how I feel about
this fight: I met Sugar Ray when he fought a guy named "Iron Jaw Prado" in Portland in '79; he was eating in a diner at Bates College,Lewiston, Me where I worked. Admired him from '76 Olympics. But when he fought Hagler I didn't like how he copied almost all of Ali's mannerisms. Hagler did win that fight because the judges were inept. Today's compubox would've been lop-sided for Hagler easily. Also,
I am still upset about this fight after all these years, I thought Marvelous Marvin won but I am bias because I was a big fan of his but after watching this fight at least 5 times I though he won
Leonard won because before the fight he said: the reason I will win is because you don't think I can. One of the great psyche jobs of all time. Dundee told him after round 10: 6 minutes to the new champion - propelled him to victory!
I'm afraid the outcome of this fight really took the life out of Marvin. I see him every week in a swimming pool just outside Milan, Italy, and he doesn't look good at all. Years ago we used to play b-ball in the same playground, again in Milan, and he was pretty fit. Since then he must have put on some 40 pounds.
m8 its a known fact, suger was shit scared to fight pryor, he even chaged weights as a ameteur to avoid him. pryor done everything to try and make the fight happen but suger ray runner bottled it.
Leonard ran, held the whole fight. Light flurries. Why wasn't he deducted a point for holding so much!!! Hagler should have never opted for the 10oz., the 22ft and 12 rounds. Leonard ducked Pryor, no rematch for Duran, Hearns, till years later. Never gave Benitez a rematch. His only "great" fight was against Hearns, he lost the rematch. Pryor would have kicked his ass and Leonard knew it. He didn't win that fight. He was a self-promoted, manipulative, over-rated fighter, his wife said he lost.
you make stupid comments ! hagler had 12 round fights against hearns and mugabi but guess what he never complained because he stopped them ! hearns never wanted an immediate rematch with leonard and moved up to light middle and leonard retired after his next match against finch ! after duran quit against leonard he diapeared
disapeared back to panama for 18 months ! benitez never deserved a rematch against leonard and the rematch was never made ! let me tell you something if leonard never got a detached retina he would have ko'ed pryor full stop ! the bottom line is leonard had 1 fight in 5 years against a bigger naturally stronger figher and he outboxed him ! your opinions against leonard is because you don't like him and shows in your comments ! sorry but leonard divorced his wife so sour grapes i think dont you !
The Hagler decision was contriversial but that aside Leonard is almost certinly the best boxer of the 1980s + probably the best boxer since Ali. He outboxed + KOd Benitez, outboxed Duran to the point of humiliation, stopped the deadly Hearns in one of THE great fights, moved up + KOd Kalule at light middle.
Aaron Pryor? He was very good at light welter for a short time, but you don't seriously think Ray Leonard was afraid to fight him? Leonard wins by TKO
Alternately, controversial TKO of Benitez in a cagey affair. No rematch. Whooped by Duran, and only won the rematch when his bloated slug of an opponent quit unhurt. No rematch for 9 yrs. Beat Hearns in a fight he was losing badly. No rematch for 8 yrs. Controversial SD vs aging Hagler. No rematch.
What we're left with is a thorough beating by a lightweight and a few close/controversial wins, none settled with meaningful rematches. SRL a talented fighter but vastly overrated, much like Ali.
You could watch boxing for 20-30 years+ not see a better pound for pound fighter than Ray Leonard + certainly not a better welterweight. A skilled complete boxer who could box well offensively, defensively, fight, punch, great chin, brave + tactically versatile, astute.
He defeated a series of great Champions usually by TKO: Benitez, Duran+ the deadly Hearns in one of the best bouts I have seen.
I suspect yyou suffer from "old timer-ism" when it comes to ranking all time great boxers..
This fight was a disaster. Give leonard some credit-he fought a smart fight although it should of been a draw or maybe hagler by a point. Marvin really sucked this night,he was slow and weak. The really strange thing about this fight was marvins training. No shit- he would run 3 miles a day BACKWARDS preparing for this fight something he never before did. I think he was intimidated by leonard as fucked up as that sounds. Leonard was past his prime also- this was nothing but a forgetable fiasco.
I'd be surprised if anyone who knows anything about boxing says Leonard won. Ray fought a good, close fight but there's no way in hell you take the title away from the champion when he lands as many punches (the totals were almost the same), lands harder punches, and is the agressor. Sad fact is that the judges were influenced by the crowd and by Ray's pitty-pat flurries - that's all there is to it.
Leonard also faught a dirty fight I counted 4 glanted low blows and tweice hit late after the bell and excessive holding all of which the BUm steele let slide the most corrupted Ref in Boxing....that was rediculous how dirty and unwarned and unpenalized Leonard was in the fight by Steele...Remember steele in tyson fights and the meldrick taylor chavez fights nothing but controversy. He is either corrupt or a horrible REF
I think Leonard won the fight and do not agree with those saying Hagler was robbed. Hagler expected to dominate the fight and from time to time looked off-handed. Leonard had the skills, speed and strategy to win the fight.
das ist ein BOXKAMPF- im Gegensatz zu dem was sich heut so alles Weltmeister nennt und uns alle mit niveaulosem Firlefanz langweilt-schaut Euch gut an wie sie aussah die "gute alte Zeit" a unforgotten great fight - they gave the BEST they had!!!

As the commentator says of Sugar Ray:
"Flashy punches but only one of them lands".
The worst part was, Leonard wouldn't grant Hagler a rematch -- which is customary given the controversial decision - by of course, Sugar Ray knew he would lose. Again.

I watched this fight over and over, Leonard out boxed Hagler, Hagler spent the fight trying to land a bomb and ended up losing.

Get over it!

shit was fixed. but you gotta understand this is an older sugar ray. but yeah, hagler def fixed this shit and there's blatant evidence of it...

Standing and trading with a prime Hagler would have been suicide for anyone. He can take it and dish it out like no other. Sugar fought the smart fight, and what he did here is really the only way to 'beat' Hagler. Brawling with him is definitely something you do NOT want to do.
RegistrationCop 9 months ago
i saw this fight back in the day and i personally believe that sugar just in the last few rounds out witted hagler to take the fight..
Yet i do honestly feel they should have fought once more.
both legends in my eyes.great fight

The title of this video should be "Sugar Ray Leonard runs from Marvin Hagler". I hate Leonard; he fights like a bitch. He was always scared of Hagler and only came out of retirement to fight him because he thought Hagler was done. What a fag move to challenge someone when you think they are out of their prime. He still couldn't stand toe to toe with him. The judges were out of their mind to score rounds to a guy who ran the whole round and threw pitter patter punches.
brooklyntrini1 1 year ago
@brooklyntrini1 Remember that when you see that lil bitch Gayweather. Hagler and Chavez were sadly the last of a great breed called FIGHTERS. They belong at the pinnacle of the history.
ONENIGGER2ANOTHER 1 year ago
@brooklyntrini1 He wasn't running, it's called boxing, you can't expect a skilled technical boxer like Leonard to sit there and fight the other man's fight. If he did then there would be no point in boxing, boxing's about hitting, and not being hit. Not about standing toe to toe with someone until one of them can't fight anymore.
iskate547 7 months ago
@iskate547 What are you watching? Look at round 8 he just ran and barely threw any punches. Leonard will always be a bitch in my book. He always ducked fights; first Aaron Pryor where Leonard moved up a weight class to avoid him. Then retiring to avoid fighting Hagler in his prime and only coming back out because he thought Hagler was washed up. If you want the belt you have to take it not pitter patter combinations and running.
brooklyntrini1 7 months ago
@brooklyntrini1 lol@moving up in weight to fight Marvin Hagler. yet he was scared... He offered Pryor a fight and Pryor declined because he felt he was worth more.. ORLY? since when pryor? Leonard just beat Hearns and Fought duran twice and won Olympic Medals. Who knew of Pryor? and Pryor hadnt fought Alexis at that time either. Your logic loses.
InternationalBoy 3 months ago
@InternationalBoy You sir have no knowledge of the sport or concept in human behavior. I am going to have to ask you to no longer post on boxing videos as you may corrupt others with your ignorance. Ray Leonard never made an offer or attempt to fight Pryor. He also came out of retirement to fight Hagler because he felt the champ had deteriorated (He has stated this on several occasions). Even with Haglers so called deterioration Ray Leonard was still afraid and fought like a bitch.
brooklyntrini1 3 months ago
@brooklyntrini1 sorry smart ass, But its been well documented that He offered Pryor a fight you are the only moron who was under a rock when this all went down. He offered Pryor a fight and wanted the Lions share and Pryor declined. You are probably one of those cornballs who watched the HBO series legendary nights and got fooled off that press conference and thought that was it for the story. Sorry bro You were wrong.
InternationalBoy 3 months ago
@brooklyntrini1 and even still a Detriorated Hagler> a Nobody Pryor. So your logic still fails. And yes i know he fought marvin when he felt he was ready to. Whats the big deal? Leonard hadnt fought anybody in 4 years and was less than stellar in his performance against a Tomato can. Matter of fact the odds were 4 to 1 in favor of Hagler So nobody gave leonard a chance in hell. You just mad cause Leonard out boxed him. You expected Hagler/Hearns and got your feelings hurt, lol@you.

TheBlueWhale011 1 year ago
@TheBlueWhale011 Sorry to bust your bubble of make believe but Hagler beat the shit out of Leonard in every exchange. When he did get hit he didn't as much as blink but stayed with his workman like assault. Remember Hagler's body and mind had been conditioned to a 15 round fight and he did not realize the urgency. If he had gone into a 13th round he would have put Leonard away. Leonard was treated for exhaustion after the fight a fact that has been surpressed by media.

Hagler beat the crap out of Leonard, but....this was a boxing match and Leonard out boxed Hagler. I saw this fight live on PPV, and have it on Laserdisc. As much as I admire Hagler, Leonard out boxed and out foxed him with his flurries in the final seconds of the rounds.
steph26139 1 year ago
Running ain't "boxing." You can't move in reverse the whole damn fight landing butterfly kisses and win a pro boxing match. Or at least you shouldn't be able to. This wasn't Olympic boxing and those light little fluury punches don't count for much. They landed mostly because they weren't effective scoring punches and Hagler didn't care.
Hagler was robbed. The only reason that they GAVE it to Leonard was he was more marketable.

PBF win
Tfuchure 2 years ago
Hagler spent his entire career trying to lure smaller men into the ring to fight him and when the last of the small men got into the ring he got owned in a fight that will forever haunt his legacy.
If he had gotten beat by Hearns then it still would have been an embarrassment but atleast Hearns was active and close to his prime,Leonard was a good five years past his prime with only one fight in five years.
the Leonard of 87 would never have beaten the monzons and hopkins but he beat hagler

Leonard stole this fight very effectively but i dont think he would have been awarded the W today with this kind of performance.
inktankPS3 2 years ago
Hagler was naturally the bigger men and started at a higher weight class than both of them, while Hagler was calling out Benitez,Hearns and Leonard,Michael Spinks was calling him out and suprise suprise,no answer from the Hagler camp.
Any just judge would award Leonard the decision as he outboxed Hagler and in many ways exposed Hagler's limitations as the "seek and destroy" fighter that he is usually(and inaccurately) portrayed as.
syrandon 2 years ago
@syrandon Your really full of shit: Spinks would not have lasted 3 rounds against Hagler and he only called him out because he knew Hagler was intent of dominating the Mids and had absolutely intrest in the move up.

Lets see SRL never hurt Hagler not once in the fight, SRL did showboat the last minute of each round, and yes the judges did earn there payOFF and give it to SRL
shumirules1 2 years ago
Since when was a fight judged on who hurt who? How many fighters hurt Hagler throughout his career?
Fights are scored upon a round by round system and in that system Leonard outboxed him over twelve rounds unless the hagler apologists simply close their eyes when their hero is getting hit with superior combinations by a washed up,inactive welterweight
syrandon 2 years ago
Again are you crazy? Hagler agreed to so much to get the fight including a 12 round match (it would have been much harder to steal a 15 round fight), a 20 ft ring, Leonards gloves of choice ect Also Leonard immediately made it clear that there would be no rematch.
So i suppose Leonard losing to Duran (who was a blown up lightw8 fighting at welta for leonards crown) shows that hes a bum? A guy who could only steal fights and not win them?
They were both great fighters.
inktankPS3 2 years ago
Roberto Duran had already proven his worth as a welterweight in beating former champion Carlos Palamino.Duran was very much at his peak and was an active fighter,so the comparison isn't worthy.
Hagler was taking on an inactive, washed up welterweight who had fought only once in five years and receiving a larger portion of the purse to do so.Hagler was at no disadvantage as Leonard at that point had no business even lasting the distance.

Adebay0r 2 years ago
Would you agree with -
Hagler: second greatest ever Middleweight, behind Sugar Ray Robinson
&
Leonard: second greatest ever Welterweight, behind Pernell Whitaker.
Adebay0r 2 years ago
Do you not think that Robinson was also the greatest at 147 also. He would have beaten both Leonard & Whittaker at welterweight.

Hmmmmm.... yeeah I agree.

07091102 2 years ago
How about Jimmy McClarnin? Approx. a 3rd of his fights were against 11 different HOFers, beating most of them at least once. Another great SRL is routinely ranked over...
Put SRL on Griff's schedule, fighting a cavalcade of quality welts and middles in a 15 yr period, and he'd have a lot more losses. Put Griff on SRL's schedule, starting out with a lucrative pro TV deal, hand-picked opponents and one superfight a year and he'd never have lost. And he'd do it all without the smoke and mirrors...
Aurelian147 2 years ago
Griffiths schedule?
112 fights is far too many+ he clearly boxed for far too long. May in part explain some of his health problems.
A world class fighter now has 50 fights max
Leonard deserved all the money he got, a fantastic amateur boxer who was a stellar professional, beating some of the best fghters of all time in some of the greatest bouts. Boxing owes a massive debt to Leonard+Ali. They popularised the sport worldwide+ made multi-millionaires of all their great opponents..
07091102 2 years ago
Archie Moore had 200+ fights and was still in rude health late in life. Wilfredo Benitez had 50 odd and is now in a sorry state. Just the way it goes.
Griffith earned his stripes, taking on a who's who of welts and middles from his era, not like Goldy Ray who was effectively retired after 30 fights, claiming greatness for a few narrow wins over HOFers without rematches, and only returning for "superfights" which did little but pad his ego and bank balance.
Aurelian147 2 years ago
@Aurelian147 Well said and totally accurate. Leonard = Much Ado About Nothing.
ONENIGGER2ANOTHER 1 year ago
Aurelian147 2 years ago
Duran, too, had every physical disadvantage vs SRL and still thoroughly spanked him. I could never see Duran manhandling Griff the way he did Ray. Why do you think Ortiz never tried?
SRL might have had flash, but those shoeshiners aren't gonna bother Griffith. Griffith in his prime was a monster, possessing the jab (which was plenty quick, btw), the toughness and the pedigree to beat SRL. But give Ray a 24' ring, 12 rounds and at least one judge with a Bozo the Clown scorecard and who knows?
Aurelian147 2 years ago
Duran was a more concussive puncher than Griifth as his KO record proves. As good as Duran was in Montreal Leonard adopted the wrong tactics+ tried to outfight Duran at close range. The second fight in Orleans+ Benitez-Duran = later Hearns Duuran showed the way to beat Duran was hit+ move, maintain distance. Duran only won 1/4 against those men. Griffith also could be outboxed. Won 2/5 v Paret, Napoles+ Benvenuti who I refuse to accept as being a better technical boxer than Leonard or Hearns..
07091102 2 years ago
Leonard fought the wrong fight?! And you moan about my excuses! Leonard had no choice but to fight that way. A Duran left hook in the 2nd round put him in orbit and after that he couldn't keep him off. Duran was too strong, too motivated to lose that night.
The key factor in II was Duran's condition, not SRL's tactics. Duran was a bloated slug whose training habits prior to the fight are well known, and his quitting had more to do with his lavatorial needs than anything SRL did.
Aurelian147 2 years ago
I am not making any excuses. Montreal was Durans finest hour. He fought a very good fight, Leonard fought a good fight but the wrong fight. Duran should be credited for making Leonard fight that way.
However Leonard changed tactics completely in Orleans. Duran would have found Leonard difficult whatever condition he was in. Benitez later used similar tactics, was Duran out of condition then? Also Hearns used his big reach+ power advantage to KO Duran. How was Durans conditioning that night??!
07091102 2 years ago
As if the only factor in a fight is SRL's tactics. SRL fought the 2nd the way he'd have liked to fight the 1st, the difference was Duran's physical state. In the first he was too strong and motivated and forced SRL to fight his fight.
Duran's biggest problem in II was not SRL pulling funny faces but the 48oz of steak he'd wolfed down in the previous 12 hrs, having drained himself to make weight (he was 10lbs over 3 days before the fight). So when nature called, he had more pressing needs...
Aurelian147 2 years ago
So in Orleans it was Durans pre-fight steak that cost him the fight? Not Leonards hit and move tactics?
Ha Ha Ha! So what was he eating when Benitez ( a Leonard TKO victim) clearly outpointed him in 82?
Then what the hell was he eating when Hearns (another Leonard TKO victim)smashed him to pieces when they fought??!!!
Your attempts to diminish the achievements+ status of Ray Leonard are becoming comically desperate+ absurd.
Pre-fight steak indeed...
07091102 2 years ago
Well attested what Duran's training regimen was comical leading up to that fight. Only the SRL cultists believe it to be some kind of masterclass by Ray. Watch it, Ray didn't hurt Duran once & was running so fast at one point he almost tripped over his own boots. The best punch he landed was the bodyshot as Duran turned away
Like I said, Ray fought the 2nd the way he'd have liked to fight the 1st, but Duran forced him to fight his fight. The key factor was Duran's condition, not Ray's tactics.
Aurelian147 2 years ago 2
Griffith was not a big puncher full stop. Of his 85 wins around 25 were by stopppage. He was routinely outpointing men long before the tragedy of the 2nd Paret fight. Griffith had already lost around 10 times at welter before moving up to fight at 160lbs+ there were losses to some fighters I have never heard of. Shorter man, shorter reach, slower, no knock out power... I simply cannot envisage him beating a peak Ray Leonard. Comparing them at 35 is silly, Leonard was effectively done at age 34
07091102 2 years ago
You're hammering Griffith for losses at the end of his career. You're even hammering him for a loss to Nino. Maybe he should have retired after fight II, that way fanboys could rank him untouchable like they do with SRL.
KO %s don't always equate to power. Anyone who knows a lot of him will tell you Griff held back after Paret. Don't be fooled though, Emile was well capable of putting hurt on the big boys. Were he the feather fist you're claiming he couldn't have dropped the Tiger like he did.
Aurelian147 2 years ago
Most of Griff's losses came well into his 30s against the emerging middleweights of the 70s. Imagine how many losses post-prime SRL would have had he faced Nunn, Benn, McCallum, Jackson, Kalambay etc in the late 80s instead of his veterans' tour.
He's well capable of out-boxing SRL. You don't win 3 of 4 vs the slick Rodriguez or twice track down and beat the elusive Archer without stellar boxing skills. I don't see SRL KO'ing him or out-boxing him...
Aurelian147 2 years ago
Griffith took on a much wider array of quality fighters than SRL did, usually several times, had more title fights, more HOF fights and had a far more storied career. Could SRL beat Tiger, Briscoe, Benvenuti? Could 35 y/o SRL go 15 with Monzon (and nearly win)?
These are the type of fighters the Golden Boy is routinely rated over, for no logical reason that I can see, unless bolo punches and a golden boy smile floats your boat.
Aurelian147 2 years ago
Leonard is rated because of his superb skills+ charisma; but also there was the substance to beat not only the best fighters of that era but some of the best boxers of all time+ he looked great in doing it too! great combinations, upper body movement, Ali shuffles and bolo punches too.
Napoles, Benvenuti+ Griifth were good but I + most other boxing observers don't belive they were better than Leonard. I think you would have to go to to the orginal Sugar Ray to find a better welterweight..
07091102 2 years ago
"I think you would have to go to to the orginal Sugar Ray to find a better welterweight"
This is what I'm talking about. Many, many welts had far more storied careers than SRL, better records than SRL, beat better comp than SRL (numerous times), yet he gets rated over the lot, because of his golden smile and a handful of marquee wins over HOFers, the circumstances of which are often ignored, and all of whom Griff would have beaten with less trouble, imo.
Aurelian147 2 years ago
We agree that Leonard + Hearns were better than the champions that succeded them. They were clearly better than those that immediately preceeded them: Benitez, Cuevas, Palmino. Even if you claim Napoles, Benvenuti+ Griffith were better; that still makes them top 10 probably top 5 which is all time great status.
Benvenuti was never a better boxer than Leonard or Hearns+ he won 2/3 v Griffifth, Napoles beat Griffth too. Leonard was at least as good as Napoles in my humble opinion..
07091102 2 years ago
The welt division dates back to the turn of the century, so dunno how SRL being better than the welts of the mid-70s and mid-80s makes him top 5.
Remember Nino was a middle, not a welt, and I thought Griff edged him in III. Ditto Paret II.
If a 135lber at the end of his prime could spank SRL, if Hearns could win most of the rounds they fought, and if Benitez could hold him in check, then the pre-Paret Griff who didn't hold back the way he did in later fights is more than capable of doing it.
Aurelian147 2 years ago
Ray Leonard is easily top 5.

Biggest rip off in boxing. sad. Hagler won this fight.
canadaguy2112ca 2 years ago
I had Hagler winning 7-5 rds, but quite close.
It's Haglers aggressivness that wins the fight, and he hit Leonard more than the media thought....I wonder why the "media" didn't see it.
Canamana42 2 years ago
Leonard's best punch in that round was after the bell!

Ray Leonard was a runnin bitch! Even though they gave the title to him, this was easily his worst moment in his career.
theriokid 2 years ago

Tombstone1959 3 years ago
Jimmy thinks that this fight could have gone either way, but Jimmy thinks it's crazy to believe that this fight illustrates the corruption of boxing.
Jimmy thinks if you would like to see the corruption of boxing you need to see fights like Chavez vs Whitaker, or Paez vs Dorsey.
Jimmy has always liked SRL, and Jimmy thinks a split descision here was well in line.
In the end, there's only Jimmy.

Jimmy makes some very valid points with regards to the corruption in boxing.
I respect Jimmy's call, although in my humble opinion, Hagler was robbed!
Tombstone1959 3 years ago
Jimmy appreciates that you didn't reply and drop a bunch of "F-bombs". Jimmy hates F-bombs.

Jimmy is very welcome....Jimmy knows boxing and made valid points....I like intelligent debate, no need for "F-bombs"....Thank you Jimmy!

Also,
Leonard held on for his life.;(

Hagler definitly won. No doubt. Too much politics in boxing

I am still upset about this fight after all these years, I thought Marvelous Marvin won but I am bias because I was a big fan of his but after watching this fight at least 5 times I though he won
OTKP 3 years ago
SRL landed 310 normal punches...Hagler landed 291 effective punches..i think Hagler won this if not a win at least a draw.
shankthatup 3 years ago
Leonard won because before the fight he said: the reason I will win is because you don't think I can. One of the great psyche jobs of all time. Dundee told him after round 10: 6 minutes to the new champion - propelled him to victory!
gringokaplan 3 years ago
I'm afraid the outcome of this fight really took the life out of Marvin. I see him every week in a swimming pool just outside Milan, Italy, and he doesn't look good at all. Years ago we used to play b-ball in the same playground, again in Milan, and he was pretty fit. Since then he must have put on some 40 pounds.

HAGLER worked leonard like a runaway bag all night - one of the worst 'decisions' in boxing history.

couldn't agree more... SRL was the candy kid of his day and Marvin was the badass. The decision was a travesty.

This fight reminds me so much of Frazier vs Ali. Hagler like Frazier pressurising Leonard who moves and dodges like Ali with the counters.

41ofus 3 years ago
you make stupid comments ! hagler had 12 round fights against hearns and mugabi but guess what he never complained because he stopped them ! hearns never wanted an immediate rematch with leonard and moved up to light middle and leonard retired after his next match against finch ! after duran quit against leonard he diapeared
sweetassugar69 3 years ago
disapeared back to panama for 18 months ! benitez never deserved a rematch against leonard and the rematch was never made ! let me tell you something if leonard never got a detached retina he would have ko'ed pryor full stop ! the bottom line is leonard had 1 fight in 5 years against a bigger naturally stronger figher and he outboxed him ! your opinions against leonard is because you don't like him and shows in your comments ! sorry but leonard divorced his wife so sour grapes i think dont you !
sweetassugar69 3 years ago
Wow, real Ray Leonard hater here!
07091102 2 years ago
Alternately, controversial TKO of Benitez in a cagey affair. No rematch. Whooped by Duran, and only won the rematch when his bloated slug of an opponent quit unhurt. No rematch for 9 yrs. Beat Hearns in a fight he was losing badly. No rematch for 8 yrs. Controversial SD vs aging Hagler. No rematch.
What we're left with is a thorough beating by a lightweight and a few close/controversial wins, none settled with meaningful rematches. SRL a talented fighter but vastly overrated, much like Ali.
Aurelian147 2 years ago
You could watch boxing for 20-30 years+ not see a better pound for pound fighter than Ray Leonard + certainly not a better welterweight. A skilled complete boxer who could box well offensively, defensively, fight, punch, great chin, brave + tactically versatile, astute.
He defeated a series of great Champions usually by TKO: Benitez, Duran+ the deadly Hearns in one of the best bouts I have seen.
I suspect yyou suffer from "old timer-ism" when it comes to ranking all time great boxers..
07091102 2 years ago
This fight was a disaster. Give leonard some credit-he fought a smart fight although it should of been a draw or maybe hagler by a point. Marvin really sucked this night,he was slow and weak. The really strange thing about this fight was marvins training. No shit- he would run 3 miles a day BACKWARDS preparing for this fight something he never before did. I think he was intimidated by leonard as fucked up as that sounds. Leonard was past his prime also- this was nothing but a forgetable fiasco.
opjkdg 3 years ago
I'd be surprised if anyone who knows anything about boxing says Leonard won. Ray fought a good, close fight but there's no way in hell you take the title away from the champion when he lands as many punches (the totals were almost the same), lands harder punches, and is the agressor. Sad fact is that the judges were influenced by the crowd and by Ray's pitty-pat flurries - that's all there is to it.
juh33 3 years ago
Hagler was a bully who always liked to fight people naturally lighter than himself.
Well this time, the lighter guy was too light on his feet for him to hit.
A well-deserved win.
roquefort88888 3 years ago
Boxing basics: Part of scoring "effectiveness of punches". No way Hagler should lose to arm punches. He was wise, Hagler. B/S prevailed.
1lemurian 3 years ago 2
Leonard also faught a dirty fight I counted 4 glanted low blows and tweice hit late after the bell and excessive holding all of which the BUm steele let slide the most corrupted Ref in Boxing....that was rediculous how dirty and unwarned and unpenalized Leonard was in the fight by Steele...Remember steele in tyson fights and the meldrick taylor chavez fights nothing but controversy. He is either corrupt or a horrible REF
KHLB516 3 years ago
I think Leonard won the fight and do not agree with those saying Hagler was robbed. Hagler expected to dominate the fight and from time to time looked off-handed. Leonard had the skills, speed and strategy to win the fight.
