  • there is nothing smart about doing some research and explaining what you found right after...but she is hot!

  • in Quebec we say, Flammable, Inflammable < wich means the same and we say Ininflammable to say that its not flammable... thats pretty weird.... French -_-

  • Will you marry me?

  • tits or gtfo

  • shut up bicth

  • I've always wondered this! And I think I get the invaluable thing, it's like priceless.

  • One of your very best!

  • Sometimes I watch these videos with the sound off.

  • i got a question "why cant dogs talk"

  • The last point would have been clearer if you'd pointed out the similarity with "priceless".

  • This discussion is one we had when we started our show. The word Inflammable was "Perfect" for us.

  • invaluable, inordinate pedantry.

  • Interesting.

    Wolfe

  • Gosh your smart and beautiful

  • Finally and explination for that!

  • This is an incredible, yet very credible explanation.

  • Sorry Man... I was trying to give you a "thumbs up" on this comment... but I clicked on the thumbs down by accident :-( I don't think that there's any way of undoing that... so I thought I'd leave a comment... SORRY!

  • what the hell happened to the brap brap vids

  • She is so fucking hot

  • Yea, she is hot and Smart

  • inflammable means flammable? that's unpossible!

  • No, it ain't.

  • wow... nice videooooo!!!!!! =o

  • Wait, so the definition of flammable is INflammable? Leave it to the English language to give us a genius answer like that.

  • Priceless. And ingenious.

  • Interesting one.

  • Investigate this hotforwords:

    "Dead in the water".

Where did this oft-used cliche come from? Why can't people just "dead" or "has died"? What does "water" have to do with it?

    Please investigate.

  • Not that she'll read this, but actually this is an example of a word that has changed meaning over time. The confusion didn't always exist. Her answer, however, regarding the confusion resulting form vague morphology, is very astute.

  • Oh, and...

It is also true that her analysis is morphological, not etymological.

  • Oh, and... It is also true that her analysis is morphological, not etymological. It is not the history of the word that she offers, but rather a short description of the meaning of the confused morphemes. Sorry, I study linguistics.

  • why are you sorry?

  • Oh I just feel picky - thanks for reading!

Specifically it's a change in the Derivational Morphology - this is a pretty odd case, where a morpheme intended is a homonym (same sound, different meaning, such as suite and sweet) for another morpheme. A morpheme is simply a unit of meaning, such as the word flame or the suffix able or the prefix pre.

Oh by the way, tell John to clean up his office. Bad John, Bad.

  • She explains that inflammable comes from the Latin in and flamma. Though it's very brief, that is etymology, isn't it? Or would you have her explain the etymology of the Latin 'in'?

  • only a idiot would make a remark about sex to a lady that has brains why don't you look up the word RETARDED it should describe you. keep it clean she in very informative.

  • dude, you're a muppet

  • i wish i could insult like u. u must b reeli smart too

  • you are so smart.

  • She is teaching us about words. Only an idiot would say words are not important.

You probably think maps are just some kind of cartoon for explorers..lol

  • YOU set many guys on fire! Great fun!!! for sure!

  • wow that makes sense. The same thing works for infamous too.

  • Not really. Infamous means to have a notoriously bad reputation. Famous, however, means having a widespread reputation, usually of a favorable nature. :)

  • I'm very confused. It's not me, it's english that's stupid

  • don't think you described the prefix bit as good as i know you can, but good work regardless, i enjoy a bit of entymology/morphology from time to time. ;)

  • I think her words are beautiful too

  • These vids by hotforwords are actually very interesting. Yes, she's very attractive, but the language lessons are quite informative, too.

  • Certainly not offensive - its educational ;)

  • i'm not even focusing on what she is talkin about... i'm just looking at how fine she is...

  • I love your accent. :)

  • How the heck did this video get flagged as inappropriate????

  • Use of the internet for educational purposes is simply unacceptable.

  • *LOL*

  • some people just see the intro and flag it. :/

    i don't think its inappropriate.

  • I can't get enough. Love it.

  • Marina has discovered the missing element in sexual relations today, wit and intelligence. Hugh Hefner proved that in the original Playboy magazine, nowadays it's just another rag like Hustler. Bring it on, Marina!!

  • Damn, you should make some more... Ehm... "challenging" videos.........

    yes... more... challenging... :D

  • So... Why isn't the French word "Flamboyant" not "Inflamboyant", or the Spanish "Flamenco" not Inflamanco"

    Hummm...???

  • because the enlgish language is f'd up in its use of words, y it roks

  • This awesome! A hot blonde talking about the origins of language. If I had this type of instruction in school I would know the difference between a noun and pronoun. I still don't know the difference. She is doing God's work.

  • See. latin isn't dead. Far from it when she puts it to use. The pics lure us in, but she is dresed very modest in her presentation. Still smokin' but far from scantily clad. This girl deserves a segment on national television. It shouldn't offend anyone, especially due to the fact she wants US to learn. Plus she never displays anything that isn't appropriate for the whole family. She's beautiful and smart. She can't hide that, so why bother?

  • The english, french, spanish and some others (sorry, does'nt remember the rest, plz fill in here) belongs to the latin languages, while swedish, german, danish (dont now about this one) belongs to the germanic speached languages (there's more, well if you want to count the rest of them, please go ahead...). The last one, the "slavian" languages (ok, some bad english about these language family names, sorry...) has the finish, russian, romenian, bulgarian languages.

  • What's more interesting about this, is to find out what words that has passed on to which language. When did it happened, how did it happened etc., which Hotforwords has made on some words. "Flame" is in fact "Flamma" in my language, swedish. Like in the english language, some words have many meanings in the swedish language also. Try to analyse a word from your language, which might see equal to another word in another language, quite interesting to see how they are related to eachother.

  • Finnish is one of the Slavic languages? Check you facts before you spew bullshit like that again please :)

Finnish belongs to the Uralic language group... Hello. Good bye!

    Thank you.

  • srf1941,09102007. flamable is normal mod1

inflamable is the orthonormal.,so is schwa

    for punctuation. federalPopulationControlCenter for centrino,

    array of mod1 for celeron,vectors of mod1.

    yes thank you. hannahHM1943dgz

  • Hi,

I really like your channel. I like linguistics a lot specially how languages evolve and words are created.

One suggestion, since video updates are weekly it will be a good idea that "Guess the word" video and its response to be a week apart.

  • you are gorgeous!

  • Damn, no wonder the English language is so difficult for ESL'ers.

  • How beautiful u r baby.U r a real wish.

  • also the word infamous anf famous

  • Actually Infamous has a negative connotation of the word Famous. Normally Famous is used to describe someone well-liked. Whereas Infamous is used to describe someone much hated. Famous is normally used to describe actors, historic heroes, and the like. Infamous used to describe well known and successful thieves, pirates and villians of the like.

  • inflammable means flammable? wat a country

  • hi doctor nick!

  • Are you Russian?

  • Yes, CocolutoBeans

  • *g* die het doch en egge ab... ;)

  • Very nice vid :) Just one thing that bothers me. The word Invalueble means Not to be valued cause of high worth, shoildn't it also mean not to be valued because of low worth? Also, since valueble means that you can value it, doesn't mean that it's of high worth? It could also be defined that you can value it, how much you can value it depends, right? So Invalueble=Worth really much/Worth nothing and Valueble=Worth very much/Litterly nothing? Or?

  • kandemon, invaluable means a REALLY high value, one that is so high you can't buy it.. like the Mona Lisa or the Eiffel Tower... though even they may have a price. It's the same thing as priceless. Which itself is price + less.. which can be confusing, but it never means a low price.

  • She's great. Why would anyone criticize her? She's beautiful and she does an excellent job. She's also no dummy - I don't know what her background is, but she claims to be a true philologist. Regardless, her vids indicate she does have a clue about things.

  • Not that it matters or anything, but prefix is pronounced [PRE (like "pree") fix]. Just thought I'd mention it, for future videos.

  • Wow nice job

  • Does anyone know who this person really is? Is she European and from what country. Why does she do these postings?

Is she a teacher? Is she a model? How does she make a living? Is she over 30 or under?

  • She's nice, she teaches, and she's entertaining. Who cares "who this person really is?" It's youtube, not wikipedia. Be entertained!

  • 1. no

    2. She is Russian (don't you hear a heavy Russian accent???)

    3. watch her videos, rate them high and soon you all will find out why she is doing this... no, it's not because she loves etymology ;)

think darling, think! why do all people post videos on youtube?

    4. think again! she can't be a teacher... why do you care how she makes her living?

    5. he is 26 according to her website (looks like it's true)

  • hey, kinda cool, go to my page to see my gecko sandy and comment her vids!!!!!

  • NICE :-??

  • hi givassharon9 i want to

  • PYC ))))) ???? or in other words are you from a slavish speaking country ....

  • where i left my keys?

  • Invaluable relates more to priceless such as someone's services, someone's love, etc...but valuable relates more to assets of a physical nature. Invaluable has an english American meaning of a respect for someone while valuable doesn't usually sound good relating to a person's ethical qualities or character qualities.

  • WTF?

  • Teresting.

    Credible.

    Sightful.

  • i like this show already

  • shut it

  • who killed john fitzgerald kennedy?

  • who killed john fitzgerald kennedy?

  • Interesting way of choosing to educate people. I'll give her props for that. I knew most of that though. Ah well. I understood her explanations, and I don't really comprehend what's so confusing about it.

  • hey kinda cool go to my page to see my gecko, sandy, and please comment her vids, thanks!!!!!!!!

  • ok u're smarter than me. are u happy now? ;)

  • Both inflammable and flammable is the same shit, don´t joke with the brain of stupid people, pretty girl...

  • I am soo F·cking confuse that my brain hurts! lol! charming vid! lol!

  • that's a man

  • i don't get it

  • russian?

  • Why are YOU answering questions about the english language? You don't even speak it fluently...

Floating on your looks I guess... You could be telling people how to knit and hundreds of thousands would watch it....

  • "Why are YOU answering questions about the english language? You don't even speak it fluently..."

Hey genius! Ever hear of Vladimir Nabokov? Nabokov wrote his first literary works in his native Russian, but rose to international prominence as a master English prose stylist for the novels he composed in the United States.

  • And yet... you're watching this broad on youtube... Read a book if he's so great... yeah, I guess you'll rather sit in front of your pc and watch these videos...

  • I have time to read AND watch "this broad" on Youtube. The point is, her nationality has no bearing on her knowledge. Or maybe it does...?

She seems to know more about YOUR native language than you probably do. I'd say she's hardy "floating" on her looks. There's plenty of substance in her videos.

  • My native language is norwegian... and I dont think she can say ONE word in norwegian...

Yeah... substance in her videos, thats why like EVERY video thumbnail is a picture of her thats completely taken out of context! Or the "Opening title" yeah.. shes soo not floating on her looks...

  • "Yeah... substance in her videos, thats why like EVERY video thumbnail is a picture of her thats completely taken out of context! Or the "Opening title" yeah.. shes soo not floating on her looks..."

If she was droning on about what she wants in a man, or dancing around, or lamenting the loss of her favorite nail polish, then maybe she'd be floating on her looks. As it is, she's actually got something substantial going on in the videos (besides her pictures.)

  • Ok, go to her channel, click on "most viewed" on the video bar... Now out of 49 videos, all the top 9 that are shown, are the ones with the thumbnail picture that has nothing to do with the content of the video... If she's teaching language, WHY THE HELL IS SHE WEARING A BIKINI IN THE THUMBNAIL photo??!? THATS what I mean by floating on her looks... getting views, not for the content, but for the Intro, and the stupid lingerie photos that show up now and then...

  • "THATS what I mean by floating on her looks... getting views, not for the content, but for the Intro, and the stupid lingerie photos that show up now and then..."

You're kidding, right?!? What are you, 12 years old? Who would watch and pay attention to a "normal" looking woman teaching this kind of stuff on Youtube???? As for motive, who cares? She's got hot looks and hot information. What could be better?

  • EXACTLY MY POINT!!!! NOONE would watch it if I was to do it, or you... But because shes hot and lightly dressed, she gets views... TELL me thats not floating on her looks...

  • "EXACTLY MY POINT!!!! NOONE would watch it if I was to do it, or you... But because shes hot and lightly dressed, she gets views... TELL me thats not floating on her looks..."

That's just the way the world works. Get used to it.

  • I don't agree that she's merely "floating on her looks."

As I said, if she was presenting CRAP, and dressing it up with her looks then I'd agree. As it is, she has some substantial content that equals her "dressing," and hence, she's awesome.

  • Thanks Phil! Of course I wouldn't even be able to pronounce your screen name on national television, but hey! :-)

  • "Thanks Phil! Of course I wouldn't even be able to pronounce your screen name on national television, but hey! :-)"

I don't think it'd be a problem with your accent. Ha ha.

  • "Read a book if he's so great... yeah, I guess you'll rather sit in front of your pc and watch these videos..."

What can I tell ya? I have a thing for smart Russian women, AND I'm reading Christopher Hitchens' book right now. Amazing, huh?!?!

  • You are flammable. You just set me on fire.

  • Damn she is hot!!! What's your talking about?

  • no shes not.

  • This is video is wrong. We read the Elements of Style in AP English, which explains that the word "flammable" was derived from "inflammable" because some people didn't know that inflammable means combustible. To avoid confusion, "Flammable" was put on trucks and containers of inflammable substances. We read the Elements of Style in AP English.

  • audigitus, did you even watch the video? She said that they mean the same thing and came from the same word. Pay attention before you go spouting your mouth off!

  • glencity, did you even read my response? I said that flammable came from inflammable- they didn't come from the same word. Thus, the video is WRONG. The latin prefix explanation is right but doesn't apply to flammable and inflammable.

  • audigitus, did you even watch the video? She never says the two words come from the same place... so the video is correct, not wrong as you state. She simply points out the confusion with the fact that the IN is not a negative IN with relation to IN + FLAMMARE, she never went into the origin of flammable

  • If you want to add to the description of something, you can do it in a polite manner as opposed to immediately saying the video is wrong, as it is most definitely is not wrong.. you just misinterpreted it.

  • I concede that the video is not wrong, that was an overstatement. But the video was misleading and implied the two words came from the same word, as evident in your response.

  • Thank you for this video, it was very informative. Now I will watch the bunny with a pancake on its head.

  • very nice...

  • She needs to talk less and get naked.

  • please check out my relationship advice videos and channel and leave any relationship questions you may have!!!!

  • Hello, stupid americans... XD

  • check out my shit! i thought i was gonna see some titties in this vid but nothing

  • That was actually informative. You are really great at explaining things. Have you ever thought of teaching? Depending on where, you might have to tone down the puppies, but I think you would be really successful...

  • I want to be in you and no, that is definately not a negative.

  • Idiocy

  • I'm a huge queer(no i'm not fat)and I have to admit you make me wet...sexy accent. :)

  • hot!
