  • Don't even say Gladys and Beyonce in the same sentence. Gladys Knight is one of the best alto singers in the world. Her voice range is comparable to Cher’s, Toni Braxton’s and Tracy Chapman’s. I don't mean to undermine her unquestionable success, but she'll never get close to that level. She's more of a pop singer making up for her vocal deficiencies with ass shaking.

  • @gourmet09 and the half dressing, gladys didnt hve to do that or change her nose and skin tone to sale records like beyonce and she till was sucessful

  • "Didn't anybody tell you love had another side!"

  • Rhanks for the post! My absolute favorite by Gladys Knight And The Pips!

  • RIP Nick

  • I LOVE Gladys, she's one of the few that can make me tear up with her voice.

    You go SOUL SINGER!!!!!!!

  • The audio quality is messed up, but who can't hear the greatness through it all?!

    Cheers from CHOICE

Jersey City's Bad Boys of Acappella

  • Tell it, Gladys! A great song for all time!

  • Gladys Knight is incredible. But let's not forget the equally amazing Pips. Being able to compliment her stellar vocals as well as they did is no small feat, and they always look smooth doing it. :-)

  • Incredible song by Ashford and Simpson- they always wrote these deeply, insightful and adult songs and Gladys Knight and the Pips brought out every last drop of power in the lyrics (check out the part @ 1:25 where she sings "...cut you down to size" and then to add salt to the wound, she takes that little pause and comes in with the death blow to this man's ego with the next line- brilliance) Why this didn't go higher on the charts is beyond me- but it's still a hit in my book!

  • @tomovox and wow! Gladys is such a cutie here with that hair and that ultra chic dress!

  • bring this style of music back im tired of today's music.

  • Ashford and Simpson are songwriting GODS.

  • Wow, Sang it, Gladys! This song is like a slap in the face for someone who has a big ego. Thats the way to make 'em feel like sh-- after they break your heart.

  • It was this very song that I knew I would love this woman forever and I still do. "So what can I tell you baby" the words and the voice inflection in this song captured my heart and soul. When I grew up; I was only about 12 or 13 years old then and couldn't understand why any man would hurt Gadys. I fell in love with Gladys Knight. The love that I have for you has gotten me in trouble more than once. I've loved you then and even now. I will always love you!

  • i love this woman.. genius!

  • i can't believe this song never made it to the top ten back in its day. this is so unbelievably good.

  • wow. she's one beautiful lady. she had lovely hair and a captivating smile! Wonderful, soulful rendition.

  • One of my favorites - I love this Motown act since I was a boy of 9. Now I'm 57 and still like the tune which always touches my white heart so deep...There is no better heritage of you, black americans, than the good old soul music. My children, 5 and 3, love your music too - like to dance and sing along and soon they also become 9...it will lead them to the right stuff. Soul music instead of the crap of today.

  • they were such a class act!

  • is this vocal grit or there is something wrong with the recording?

  • @Slayerplsko The audio is a little fuzzy.

  • Whitney is the only one close to Glady's...and she's a mile behind!!!!!!

  • Dont you mean "mileS behind"? lol

  • @james2789 yes whitney is the only comparison to gladys and aretha

  • The absolute truth!

You used to be so proud

Now your head's a little lower

And you walk a little slower

    And you...don't talk so loud

DID'T ANYBODY TELL YOU LOVE HAD ANOTHER SIDE???

  • damn, Beyonce cannot sing like this

  • I like Beyonce but she aint shit compared to Gladys.

  • @1998disco72 like duh, lol

  • @islezeus Stop slamming Beyonce

  • @MrMerrick1 BEYONCE CAN'T SING LIKE GLADYS... ACCEPT IT!

  • @islezeus No, but I wouldn't hold it against her, nobody can sing like Gladys.

  • @mafketays I never held anything against Beyonce... I simply said she cannot sing like Gladys.... I never said she couldn't sing but she can't sing like Gladys... You saw her try to out sing an Etta James song in that movie? I'm sorry she cannot touch these ladies of soul

  • @islezeus I basically agree. Beyonce is a huge talent, but I wish she'd learn that sometimes less is more. One of the many things I love about Gladys is restraint, she paces herself instead of letting loose with everything from the beginning.

I really wish that Beyonce had (respectfully!) gone to Etta to see what she could learn from her. Young people think they know everything but singers of Etta's generation could really pass on some deep musical knowledge.

  • @islezeus: You got that right! Beyonce is all flash and people think that is REAL singing. Gladys got the job and didn't have to shake her ass to do it because she had T-A-L-E-N-T!

  • @honeycone71 Damn right. Beyonce's voice does NOT compare to Queen Gladys

  • marry me

  • What a wonderful song and a wonderful singer.

  • Oh wow- this still makes me shiver, tune , tune !!

  • this my girl...i sit in amazement at this type of talent. music like this that no longer is recreated. i thank gladys for such hits as tis!!!!!

  • Damn Gladys was so beautiful and graceful, and still had that raw soul voice. The Empress is one of my favorite sistas to ever sing into a microphone

  • This song has the same sentiment that Main Ingredient's "Everybody Plays the Fool!" Beautiful!

  • Oh how I love this song!

  • i really like the way songs back then really said alot of DIFFERENT things.

nowadays, music usually just sings about abstract sadness, or lust, or horniness.

Back then, they song about like, a million different things.

Like this one, where she is talking about how her man isnt a jerk anymore.

  • Words can't explain, how good this is. Big respect from London town. xxx

  • I LIKE YOU GLADYS KNIGTH

  • I love this song so much. So much soul.

  • Galdys sings with so much effortless soul. She puts it into every single line. My favorite female singer of all time.

  • this song says it all to me right now, i had to cry yesterday nigth because a close friend is going to hawaii for college

  • Speachless, knowone comes close

  • wow kelly rowland favors gladys knight! i was young but listen to their music was the real truth!! now this is great music!!

  • when you talk about Aretha,& Patti..... Glady has to be neck to neck with them with her powerful, raspy, sultry, sexy vocals. PLus today I think her voice is better than the two mention above. Her voice hasn't lost nothing.

  • didn't you know you have to cry sometime my counsin was a male and I would often see him cry ialways felt that men can hurt to so if crying makes you feel better then go ahead and cry now he is in heaven

  • Gladys is pure truth!! Best female artist on the planet!!! imho...

  • Agreed...while not my all time favorite group, the very best concert that I ever attended was Gladys and the Pips in 1974 and I haven't seen a better show since. This song is actually hits home.

  • Waynebrasler said below that Gladys poured her heart and soul into every song on her albums...for those of you who never saw here in person, it was incredible! I saw her at least 15 times since the first time at the Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles in 1965. Every song in every show I saw was flawless -- every note in every song in every live show...nobody can touch her!! She's the best ever, that voice tearing it up every time...and sweet and beautiful, too. Too bad her choice in men was pitiful

  • I like all sorts, me; rock, prog, folk, reggae, jazz, avantgarde, anything, but you can't beat a bit of good old shit-kicking soul, can you?

  • olá amigos, eu to mandando um abraço pra você que fazem fazer da vida uma coisa muito boa, por ouvira Gladys

  • kinda feel bad for the pips there, they dont have their own lighting..just dancing in the dark background lol... but this song's great, <3 gladys knight

  • I didn't realize how good those classics were. Maybe I forgot. I need to revisit her collection.

  • A great record. Gladys and the Pips did great work for Motown from the start, and we repaid with inferior album concepts and covers and having their songs repeatedly passed on to other Motown artists to cover. Their albums are really interesting because there's no filler. Every song Gladys recorded she poured her heart into and set on fire.

Diana Ross admired Gladys' work. And please note: Diana has repeatedly said she loved Martha and the Vandellas.

  • Motown passed songs around all there artists, Gladys wasn't singled out. regardless of that, THIS IS THE VERSION of this song that realy stands the test of time. Bobby Taylor had the hit Diana covered it but Gladys made it hers.

  • This is a great song I used to spin this record over and over

  • she is soooo cute...gosh!! i cant get enough of her girlish beauty. Oh man, that smile...........i want her so bad.....so pure..

  • i know. why isn't there anyone else like her. If I had met someone that looked and sounded like that, as a musician, i'd be set for life. hahaha but seriously, she's amazingly beautiful.

  • This is my favorite Gladys song. Listen to the words, they're deep! You go Gladys. Gladys was a beautiful young woman.

  • Super clip, many thanks

  • Excellent. Miss Gladys is Awesome Thanks Largo For post Thanks Motown For share God Bless KTF 5********* and Favorited

  • classic gladys knight

  • she looks sooooo cute!!

  • How come Gladys and her Pips were considered second string to Diana Ross?

She can truly sing the ass of Diana! Maybe if SHE had married Berry Gordy....

There were so many great Motown male singers, it is difficult to pick the best. Not so with the ladies. You're listening to her.

  • Amen, STEVIEBOY!! Gladys is the best female artist on the planet..Imho..

  • you are so right i lost her for a bit in my life now she is back and i will never let her go again she is a angel and i love her

  • Stevieboy, I'm always telling my friends that Gladys was the best female singer at Motown, with Brenda Holloway a close second. If you listen to Brenda's "When I'm Gone" on an old school, million watt rack system (I still got mine, nothing sounds better), really listen to every note, you will hear vocal perfection...soft, sweet, crystal clear, strong, a little catch in her voice here and there, absolutely beautiful and my favorite Motown cut ever. She was 18 when she made it.Berry drove her away

  • @Stevieboy130664 well said! gladys really was the best.

  • @kokede

I think I have been a bit hard hard on Diana ross in the past - a great singer. Still prefer Gladys though (to just about anybody even......... Aretha - just - hush my mouth)

  • powerful meaning...go gladys, your the best

  • Diana has been quoted as saying Gladys was one of her favorite Motown acts. No hate.

  • who said Diana hated her?.. for wat?

  • someone please tell me where i can get a better quality. my mom likes this song and she asked me to get in on her poddy but couldn't find it lol :)

  • Did you try iTunes? It ought to be available.

  • I mean the better quality. I have uploaded with the album cover

  • @wimbletone If you haven't already tried, it's available on iTunes. The quality is excellent. Gladys's vocals give me chills every time I hear this song. And how can you go wrong with the Pips behind you? Perfection on all counts!

  • OMG!!!She was a beautiful young black lady, and her hair has always been so shiny and thick even when she'd cut it shoulder lenght she still had that bounce. You go girl, no wonder Diana hated on her.

  • This is one of my favorit songs by them. I grew up on this, and my sister played it enough to cause it to have a special place in my heart and mind. I also have a version of Nona Henrdyx and Billy Vera doing this same song.

  • Does anyone know were I can get an mp3 of this song.......I want it for obvious reasons

  • This song is the EPITOME of what MoTown was all about. Inspirational lyrics with powerful voices, unbelievable! Im a grown man and when I heard this song on Ugly Betty it evoked many feelings. Whoever chose this song to correspond with that scene deserves an Emmy.

  • quality.

  • Would someone put the original recording up? My all-time favorite by Gladys and the Pips!

    Thanks,

  • I have uploaded the original recording

  • Oh I found it..it was on the Motown lp "Nitty Gritty"...damn I need to get that.

  • What Gladys/Pips record was this on in the 60's? Was this Motown or after?

  • Motown

  • This song was released in 1970 & she was still with Motown @ that time.

  • I have to say also, I think that she is one of the most beautiful women!!

I am smitten, especially with that nose :)

  • I am so glad you posted this!! I have never seen or heard this song. Is there any song that the queen of soul can't sing?

No way any other singer comes clost to her quality.

    Thanks for this video

  • My hands down favorite by Gladys and the Pips.

Another great tune that some decided deserves no airtime!! What a SHAME!!!!!

  • That you sooooo much for posting this. I have been looking for this song for years. Now to have the video is too good to be true. This is one of the most underrated songs of the 60s.

  • Underrated band of the 1960's and 1970's. Great stuff.

  • there is no way diana ross's voice could ever stand up next to gladys knights voice. Gladys's voice has sooo much more power and soul.

  • I agree with you, Diana doesn't have the vocal prowess of Gladys.

  • In Gladys' memoirs, she said that in their early Motown career, she adn The Pips were the opening act for Diana Ross and The Supremes. And that Diane kicked them off because the audiences reception of Gladys overshadowed Diane. And Berry told Gladys and they were giving his act (Diana Ross and The Supremes) a hard time.

  • I love both legends...but i also don't view them as each other's competition! I like the Ross version of this song too!

  • hazelman, no shit! NOBODY could ever follow Gladys on stage in a show, and I mean nobody. She always tore it up, had the audience begging for more, nobody like her in thie whole world! The best female artist ever.

  • i too just saw ugly betty and came to find this song. its amazing!

  • Luv this song and yes I just heard it at the end of Ugly Betty recently too.

  • this was the song used in ugly betty just recently. I fit perfectly.

  • Fantastic.

    "You've gotten wise

You know how love can build you up one moment

And the next, cut you down to size

    Then you discover

All she told you was a bunch of lies"

  • Gladys is the one the greatest singers to ever pick up a microphone. Thanks for posting Largo3point0.

  • Yes! I have to say it whenever a great clip appears on here and this one of Gladys and the Pips is certainly one. Thank you.
