I'd say that he's against the guy wire (cable) that supports the pole. Maybe they don't have those much in the cities? Around here, all poles have them. I've fetched up against one once...luckily. I would have hit a tree if I hadn't hit the wire first, and at least the wire has some spring. Then someone hit the cable on the pole across from my house. The pole and cable were fine, but the impact yanked so hard that it ripped the power line out of the wall of our house!
