If Katanas are such great swords how come the japanese got their ass kicked in history everytime they met europeans with sabers? >:P Cavalery sabers were used in all Europe, US , Russia , Otoman Empire,Arab countrys etc etc etc even in last century. The Saber was the real deal, katanas are just overrated.
Bowing , is probably the feature of Japanese etiquette that is best-known outside Japan. Bowing is considered extremely important in Japan, so much so that, although children normally begin learning how to bow from a very young age, companies commonly provide training to their employees in how to execute bows correctly.
@Magician12345 The peg ( Mekugi as it is called ) is actually there for safty, it doesn't need to be on the sword as the handle will hold for itself, Some Katana have 2 some only one Mekugi peg. cheap knockoff Katana has a handle normaly glued to the tang and maybe a fake Mekugi pin in it.
one more thing the bible says a lot of different things. but so does every other book that has ever been written in history. all of them say a bunch of stuff. which bridge are you gonna jump from. hopefully one that doesn't lead to your death in this world or beyond. :)
the bow is for respect to the blade not the people who take care of it. whoever said we are just custodians is right about being just that but if you want to bow to some dead people go to a cemetery. the sword demands it's own respect. Oh and Christianity is full of rituals and anyone that claims that they are Christian yet don't participate in "rituals" is just ignorant. but free will is great so you dont have to buy into the crap if you don't want to.
@Shazzashazbot they arent bowing to the sword, they are bowing to the long line of caretakers who preserved the blade for them throughout history. The one i have is over 600 years old. imagine how many generations of people that is taking care of the sword to pass it down in pristine condition. We are all just custodians of these works of art.
I'm no expert but I can see he's holding a fine piece of art in his hands. I'm trying to find a blade with a deep sori as shown in this example. Anyone knows a place?
Japanese swords are...well, swords. They cut, they kill, they slash extremely well, they're somewhat deficient on the thrust versus chainmail (or at least should be with the tip being as fat as it is), they can't be half-sworded but you can still use the pommel cap as a weapon...it's effective against just about everything except chain (and this I'm not 100 percent sure of because I've never *seen* a katana tested that way against chain) and steel plate.
@trialsrider001 If you examinate a shinto period sword in the private cabinet of a japanese collector, he probably won't let you try to cut with it. That is not exactly the kind of shit you cut milk jugs with... Some swords are to ancient to risk to damage them by trying to cut. They just are artpieces that must be preserved... But it is probably hard to understand for a backyard milk jug tameshigiri expert.
plate it wont pierce chain it can with the tip. for its purpose it is a superb weapon and the Samurai had other weapons that could get past heavy armor. and there the quality of the japanese blade is much higher than any other sword in the world.
@LoneMyth my mother is Phillpino. MY grandfather got one during WW2..i found out the katana is about 250 years old it was made in the Rikuzen provence by a man named Tsunamune..its a incredible piece of work. The edge is beyond sharp i took the time to put that special powder on it and check on it once a year. Its not over rated this blade was used in combat many times i think its worth quite a bit
@RJF1966 What you’re holding is a piece of history your lucky you got that from WW2. I was referring to katana in battle is not all that people make out to be.
@LoneMyth i would disagree. Ive messed with it a bit to see what i can cut..20 years ago ..lets say i took it and cut a 5 inch diameter branch with no problem it went right threw it with almost no resistance and it Did not damage the edge..sorry guys i was curious at the time. I oiled it and cleaned it with that speclal powder...i looked at the edge again and it was perfect.
@thedarkone123123 well today is impossible...but in the past in japan the richest people proved their swords on dead or living criminals...sometimes they also killed some poor monks whose corpse would have not claimed by anyone
( old koto era tosho would refer to someone who was an expert appraiser as being 'of the eye' ) - even high end production katana should be afforded this amount of respect and care - as well as nihonto , purely from a safety standpoint above all else .
for once something showing a real way to examinate a japanese sword, way to not hurt yourself (duh i cut my fingers) or damage the sword (fingers on the blade, poorly fixed blade in the tsuka, and any problem that can happen with old japanese swords)

@RJF1966 the reason I said it is overrated because it fails to cut through armour and also chainmail. And chainmail is the lowest form of armour.

in my life i have held a real forged sword three times,
the first time when i was young i touched the blade not knowing doing a rurouni kenshin pose, i hope i did not cause any rust,
the second time the person showing me the sword cleaned it immediately after not taking any chances.

The gentleman shown is one of my teachers, Tatsuhiko Konno Sensei.
Not only is he an expert sword polisher, restorer, and appraiser; he is also a high-ranking Kendo teacher and Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido practitioner.
The whole video from which this clip came (hopefully with his consent) is available at his Web site. Do a search on "Token Konno."
The whole video includes demos of sword polishing, cleaning and care for the sword owner, as well as the above-shown section on sword viewing.
