  • Who the fuck uses checks in this day in age of debit and credit cards anyway????

  • Thank you for teaching us how to generate a fraud check :)

  • lol, things to do: 1) develop a safety measure against acetone, that could be easily done by looking into several chemical factors of acetone. 2) other companies will develop similar pen tech or other pen technology that protects check-writers, 3) educating the public is one way to prepare them. For those saying that you just learned how to do this....it has been on the internet for years. not on youtube, but on blogs, webpages, forums, etc...

  • this was in the movie catch me if you can Tom Hanks

  • This is a misleading effort to sell you a product that you do not need. The easiest way to avoid to problem is not putting mailed checks in a unsecured mail box. Away mail checks from a locked mail box. Their are available in many places. My small community has several so your will also.

  • @earlearhart judging by your english, I doubt anyone will listen

  • Wow great Uniball Gel pen people - you just showed everyone how to commit a crime. We need this too now that people are desperate for money. Can you show us now how to burglarize a house without getting caught? Perhaps you can do that with a house security system. All in the name of buying your stupid pen just to make money. Thanks a lot!

  • This is beyond stupid.

By showing this video you're doing the opposite of what was intended... think about it.

  • I am so glad he made this video, because I did not know how to wash checks before this. Thanks Uniball guy!

  • Buying stock in Uni-ball today!!!!!

  • Okay so why don't they make checks that show when they've been 'washed'? Something like 'THE PERSON TRYING TO CASH THIS IS A THIEF! CALL THE PO PO!'

  • Washing a check isn't identity theft. It's fraud.

  • Among the criminal community, this is probably already well known. Its a way for them to market their products while raising awareness. It also allows the test to be reproducible, and allows others to verify whether their gel pen and others actually are wash-resistant.

  • Thanks for teaching me how to wash checks!

    ;)

  • time to wash checks :)

  • what about white out

  • thnx man now ill just steal $1000 from my parents because u just showed me how...(was a joke)

  • Another interesting thing about acetone is that it is a severe carcinogen in parts per BILLION so if you must fool with acetone as the young man did with his dads check, please wear rubber gloves. These days, I love to play the guitar but in times gone by I distibuted millions of gallons of gasoline which is loaded with this and other nifty chemicals.

  • @willsoflo Erm, acetone is a common component of nail polish remover and one of the most common solvents in chemistry labs. Yes in high purity form, gloves are highly recommended and it should be handled under the fume hood as the vapors are flammable. However, the EPA does not consider it a carcinogen. In fact it is produced in small amounts in the human body naturally. -From your friendly chemist who teaches and does research with an MS in chemistry.

  • This is promoting theft.

  • @Nightmare1066 LMFAO!

  • who uses cheques nowadays?

  • or... you can just use your bank card or credit card. No need to create pens for that.

  • this didnt show that the uniball actually works...

  • The comment about using a sharpie to avoid your check being washed won't work. We worked for the telephone company for years and used sharpies to mark things, and a little fingernail polish remover (acetone) took it right off.

  • good video

  • what are checks made of...?

    just wondering.

  • @sparklerbombg i could guess... but i would be far-off.... could it be.... paper?

  • Interesting but this isn't so much about washing checks as it is buying a pen.

Does anyone write checks anymore? I don't. I use my card. No pen needed.

  • I seen how this was done 28 years ago working retail.

  • On line bill payment.

  • Hopefully this doesn't give any criminals another idea???

  • can probably use a Sharpie permanent ink pen too.

  • Wow it really works

  • yeah but the ink soaks into the pen. i dont even write thta much and i wiped out 3 of those pens in 3 weeks

  • Comment removed

  • The pen is truly mightier than the sword.

The video is somewhat blurry, so it's somewhat hard to actually see the result of the washing in this video. Something more clear would be good.

  • What a brilliant marketing strategy for Uni-Ball.

  • You can also put transparent adhesive tape over the parts of the check you handwrite. No matter what ink you use, if the crook tries to remove the tape to wash the check, he will ruin it.

  • Don't forget to inhale the acetone fumes!

  • Who even writes checks anymore? Regardless, wouldn't there still be an indentation on the check from where you wrote? How about using security envelopes so they can't tell a check is in there?

  • When is your next "how to steal" video coming out?

  • hahahahahaha!!!!!!!

  • i think this video will sell more acetone than will sell the pen

  • Of course, the dude sells the uniball 207.

  • actually, the pen we use to write on dvd's and cd's works even better than gelpens!

  • Just tell folks, don't SHOW them!

  • By the way; acetone is most commonly found in nail polish remover.

  • seriously? that needed to be said? did you know fluoride is in toothpaste? uh did you know calcium is in milk.. I mean holy hell man.. You are like a chest full of knowledge!

  • Nobody else mentioned it. Just thought I'd help the people. Damn, some people really need an attitude overhaul.

  • I asked my dad to fill out a check for lunch money at my school. I then washed it, except for the signature. I filled it in in the appropriate way, writing $600,000 dollars on the check. I put it on his bed, along with a note saying, "Your 14 year old son did it, a 40 year old proffessional criminal can do it too."

  • @mitchmitch555 i bet he was scared. lol

  • fu#$in idiot.. show everyone how to do ti.. jesh !!

  • lmao....I was thinking the same thing!!! What the heck is wrong with people!!!

  • @ajpearson6 This is known for as long there are cheques.

  • wow now all new scammers learned how to wash checks.

  • also "Tutorial on how to check wash inlcluded" in this video FTW!

  • sadly

  • I use a SHARPE ;o)

  • Regardless of hwo one pays bills, this is interesting to know.

  • Everyone blaming the person mailing the check, remember, the check also sits in the mailbox of the payee. So it could get stolen from the mailbox it is delivered to, not just while sitting in your own mailbox, waiting to be picked up.

  • Its easier than buying a pen. your bank probably offers free bill payment online service, if you can use email you can do this too !!! Wake up stop feeding the hysteria of dumb ass media that has nothing better to do than making you live in fear in one of the safer country's in this world GET OVER IT LIVE LIFE

  • 4:20 - "That's What Said" :D

  • Most checks are made to prevent this nowadays anyway.

  • This guy doesn't know his letters from his numbers.

  • or the baddies could just print your checks directly from their printer with a check-printing software and blank checks... just stick with online banking.

  • Who writes checks anymore? And for those that do, if you are stupid enough to leave a payment in your mailbox for pickup, you deserve to have this happen to you.

  • GREAT! Thanks to this video, those up and coming criminals who are just starting in the business to fraud, now know how to do it... Thank you Uni-Ball 207 Corporation for giving the new generation of criminals this valuable lesson... Idiots...

  • Doesn't it look like the routing & account numbers are marked through with a Sharpie? That didn't get erased, so why not just write checks with fine point Sharpies?

  • Notice the "Sharpie" logo on his shirt? Same company...

  • Nice Uniball commercial! hehe

Cool info. But I don't use a check unless I have to. Even the Government takes plastic now!

  • forget the pen, online banking is the bomb.

  • informative.. ill bet uniball pens are making a boatload of cash now.

  • Some criminal is sitting at the computer and researching where he can purchase a chemical to "kill" the pigment gel based ink...just a matter of time! But...still great information...thanks!

  • All the more reason to have checks that

have a carbon copy when you write it.

  • So why don't banks put a fibre that reacts to acetone into the chegue paper. Problem solved. :)

  • They could do that, but there are MILLIONS of cheques already printed.

    Good idea though!

  • Thanks for posting this. Very informative.

  • I'll bet the booth next door is selling pots and pans.

  • I have to go find the video on how to make meth now - because criminals do that too...

  • I've been using this pen for over a year. I read that it was invented by Frank Abignale (sp?), the subject of the movie "Catch Me If You Can", starring Leonardo DiCaprio. He spent YEARS defrauding just about everyone, posing as an airline pilot, printing money, etc. They finally caught him and, because he was SO good, the govt. hired him to work in their fraud department! Watch the movie, it's a hoot and based on a real person!

  • Thakns dude... I wil now buy this pen to write my checks,.... AND RIP OFF my neighbors. retard.

  • Uh, how can theives steal a check I'm mailing out in my mailbox...it I don't leave it IN my mailbox. Here's a tip: take it to the post office or drop it in a USPS mail box. Duh.

  • Isartam,

A very good suggestion, but many years ago...I was involved in a check fraud situation. I DID go to the post office to mail my bill, however; the mailman put the envelope in the business' drop box, because it was a Saturday and they were closed. Someone then reached into the drop box and grabbed a handful of checks and altered them and banks even cashed them. This was no fault of my own and I did as you suggested. What else could I have done? DUH, me.

  • exactly. he's just trying to sell that pen. ANY gel pen will work...or just take your lazy ass to the post office.

  • Thanks Mike for showing everyone how to wash a check. Was that a necessary part of the ad for your super pen? You forgot to tell the crooks on which aisle to find the acetone in the store. Gotta go watch MacGyver-do-it-yourself-bombmaking on another channel. Thanks.

  • OR YOU COULD USE A SHARPIE MARKER

  • and the Sharpie markie will go with his Sharpie shirt!

  • Sharpie owns Uni I think.

  • Do you think this would work on a vehicle title, i bought a motorcycle and the guy signed on the wrong spot which in my state voids the title and now i need a duplicate and can't get a hold of him.

  • Oh goodie,A how- to video posing as a public service announciment. It's to sell a pen!!

  • so, his trying to advertise the UniBall 207..

    when really,

his just told us HOW to do it?..

  • this is very informative and will get one of these pens. always have to be wise now days and take safe precautions

  • Yeah, now millions of people who didn't know about how easy this crime is, will give it a try. Lovely.

  • dude...he just showed me how to WASH CHECKS...

  • He's just trying to sell a fucking pen. What a load of crap.

  • Yes, that is true he is a salesman, who is trying to get people to buy the pen. Debit cards are safer.

  • This is clever. I was the victim of fraud and they didn't even need to wash my check. They copied it onto completely different paper, added their name to the top (a name that wasn't on the account) NOT EVEN IN THE SAME FREAKIN FONT!!! and then spent $300 at Walmart. I'm not surprised Walmart wouldn't catch it, not the cashier's job, but why the hell would Wamu cash a check that wasn't even on valid paper, with a name that wasn't on the account, with a check # that was already used! PSH!

  • I worked for the local paper, and had to deal with accts that were frauded. I was ignorant at first then asked questions and listened. I noted a sad refrain that Walmart just ran the damn cks/ cc cards through with out checking IDs . It's a math problem that Walmart doesn't want to slow the lines nationwide that will cost them sales. Weird and sad.

  • Acetone is a carcinogen (it causes cancer). It's also the smelly stuff in nail polish remover. So the criminals will get cancer - their just desserts!

Don't the washed checks smell of acetone?

This guy looks like a crook gone straight, making money on his criminal past. Now he's a PEN SALESMAN!

  • BTW - Acetone is NOT a carcinogen according to all the agencies that determine this. ven in California where almost anything can be a carcinogen. Just thought you would want to know.

  • OK, I'll agree to that. It is not good to inhale, though, and I would think it would leave an odor in checks.

  • Tooleman, you are making an assumption that a man has a criminal past just based on looks???? Gee, I wonder what you look like and what your looks say you may have done in your past? Good grief!

  • Guess I should say his sales pitch reminds me of hackers who get busted then go about showing people how to protect their computers from hackers.

Funny how my response has generated so many comments, aside from the video itself.

  • Why don't the check companies just print the actual checks with washable ink and when the crooks try to wash them the checks have a big blank blotch in the middle. No, we should try to solve the problem by buying some stupid pens. Maybe the check companies have stock in this pen company.

  • Great!!!!! Now my wife has the information to wash my checks and she can't even wash my clothes. What's next?

  • what most people don't realize is that just because you pay online doesn't mean your bank isn't sending a check in the mail... read the fine print for online payments and a lot of them mail checks,

  • That's the banks problem then Not Mine!

  • This is stupid. Anyone can get a check printing software at any office supply store and blank check forms. You add your own account number and personal info. Perfect for small businesses, or identity thieves. They don't need to wash your check, they just type the same bank routing and account info into their program and print as many checks as they want from your account. So they have to forge your signature, big deal.

  • With check washing, they don't have to forge your signature, it's already there. They just gotta redo the name/amount to take you to the cleaners. I only mail checks if I absolutely have to and only use USPS drop boxes to do it. I know you can't protect yourself from everything but even a little care in check handling can keep you from getting into major financial problems.

  • There are safety measures in cheques that office depot cannot replicate. Watermarks, magnetic strips...

  • I agree, the banks should have a security feature built into the checks that also washes off to show when a check has been washed. Crooks are crooks though, for every safeguard, they just find a way to undermine it. However, washing checks has been too easy for too long. But, it's kinda moot, because nothing is safe when a thief decides he wants it anyway. Thieves just suck. BTW, if the pen leaks on the countertop, the acetone trick won't wash it off now either. I see good and bad with this pen.

  • I appreciate this info. I suppose criminals can use this type of method with contracts, rental agreements, and anything else we sign in ink. Knowlege is power and this video just empowered us to fight back. Nice job.

  • Thank you for the show and tell. I am going to be rich.

  • You really don't need to worry "bad" people learning how to do it from watching this video. Believe me they either know or will figure it out all my their little themselves. I think this is great because it brings home the proof of just how damn easy it is for "bad" people to do this. I had no idea it was that easy. I personally do not use checks to pay bills, but I am going to get one. I do occasionally write a check at the grocery store etc. I would much rather be safe than sorry.

  • I AGREE!! Information does not hurt us, it elevates us. Criminals will find a way. Let's not stay in the dark!!!

  • banks shud make sure their cheque paper will disintegrate in that solution ??

  • Who still writes checks now days?

  • Well, good job.. NOT!! You just showed millions of criminals how to wash a check. I think posting this on Youtube is going to do more harm than good. Or is Walmart paying you to advertize their "gel" pen??

  • walmart doesn't make uni-ball...

  • No shiznit.. But they SELL it!

  • Mail boxes are just one of several ways someone can "steal" your check. The grocer...the utilities...etc..etc...even postal workers.

What the check printers should do is make the whole thing dissapear when contacted with a strong solvent.

P.S. Alcohol and Nail polish remover work too. Nail polish remover = acetone.

  • why NO closed captioned in here video

  • The only checks that we ave had stolen and altered were taken after depositing them in a USPS drop box in Houston.

  • Amazing that USPS "lost" 2 of my birthday cards containing checks and also did not deliver packages sent thru ebay that had confirmation of shipping; these parcels mysteriously vanished. The poor sellers both made good and probably are still fighting USPS. Funny that UPS and FedEx have no such incidents on our account.

  • There are still a lot of people who clip their outgoing mail to their mailbox for the mail carrier to pick up when the incoming mail is delivered. This is how a crook can steal your checks from your mailbox.

  • Acetone smells bad when it's fresh but when it sits in the fresh air for a short time, the smell goes away. Also, when you write a check you put it in the mailbox but if you get your checks back from the bank, they go in your mailbox.

  • Okay, here's the flaw in his message.

He says thieves go into YOUR MAILBOX & steal the CHEQUES YOU'VE WRITTEN & then alter them. Since when do we put our written cheques into our private mailboxes??? We don't!!! We drop them into GOV'T POST OFFICE mailboxes.

The only cheques thieves could possibly steal & alter from OUR MAILBOXES....... are cheques which OTHER people have sent to us!

His point is valid, but needs to be re-worded.

  • You also have a valid point. Partially. Not necessarily everyone puts all of their checks into government mailboxes. Don't make generalizations like that, or imply (as it appears you have, forgive me if i am wrong) that everyone follows the same system as you, just because it works for you.

  • sergeimosin9, it appears as if I've hit a raw nerve with you. Wasn't implying that everyone follows the same system. Just stating how we send cheques in Canada. If the message in this video is directed only to U.S. residents......then it should be made clear. You should also read LeslieSlape's comment. It confirms my point exactly.

I will now consider forgiving you. Just remember that everyone posting comments has a right to their opinion. You are not our EDITOR!!!

    The End.

  • have you ever smelled Acetone? Not sure but I think it reaks Why is the Bank not catching this?

  • Wow..I never knew how the heck they did that..I have heard of it..and seen sorta stuff like criminals with them on cops..but now I know how I guess they do it..this kinda teaches people..well..gives alot of info..OMGOSH..not enough on PEN..lol

  • It's a 6 1/2 minute advertisement for the Uni-Ball 207 pen. Who sends checks in the mail these days?

  • um...everyone?

  • old people

  • I think its really useful...

  • So, if they all know about this and are loosing big money over it, why don't they just make the checks from paper that disolves in acetone or impregnate it with something that chemically react with acetone to destroy the check. Problem solved.

  • thats agreat idea

  • Unlike ALL other nations, the USA today is comprised of a Pyramid of Lawyers in position of Power, now from the TOP down. The Lawyers are now guaranteed wealth and Power. Until they change 'Deep Pockets TORT Law, Not at all likely. Lawyers earn their wealth from Lawsuits. Keeping 'Repeat' offenders in the society guarantees TORT Lawyers a job in Power forever. Catch and Release, Defend and Prosecute.... It never ends .... in the USA of Today.

  • I'm a lawyer. What is your home address?

  • ya i know hes a totla hottie :)

  • u are mean really she just has a ccrush on him geesh

  • This video is a promotional video to show how companies can help their clients protect themselves against check fraud. what is with all of this profanity and fighting about a pen? Seriously?

  • What...? if they erase everything the signature would be erase too...so they can used

  • My oh my

  • Three family members/friends have had this happen in the last five years. It is a real hassle to straighten out the mess caused by these 'repeat' offenders in society. USA system provides lawyers (payed by taxes) to prosecute as well as defend the Perps (Free). The Lawyers are guaranteed a job. There is always someone finding a way, to 'take' what they have not earned. Seldom do they serve any 'time'.

Greed is a character fault in humans. I've also seen it in some Dogs. :>)

  • simple solution, execute all the criminals that do real extensive harm. a bullet cost only 25 cents, and saves thousands of dollars in terms of criminal stay in a prison. China & the mid eats DONT tolerate criminals, so why should we.

maybe we should start with our politicians & the BS aclu

  • suprise suprise, hundreds of people cut checks on their computers. I also backup each month and make a paper trail.always concerned about a computer blackout.

  • clever advertising ploy by uniball --- marketing appeals to fear and paranoia as usual

  • I work for a bank as a teller, these frauds happen weekly.. I no longer carry a checkbook but use BillPay for everything ... this is a good video on how easy it is. Any for the guywho said NO one ses checks anymore, that is bs...OVer 75% of all accounts have checks and are used.

  • Great information Mike. Thanks.

  • I use cash to keep the bankers from having more fees / money from me

  • Comment removed

  • Survey says..... MAIL YOUR CHECKS by putting them in a USPS Mail BOX! Don't ever leave checks out for the postman. Problem SOLVED!

  • Great u just tought 400,000 people how to wash checks. Great job dumbass.

  • Looks like an ad for Uni Ball. I'm sure this happens... as does credit card fraud, etc. but, I'm willing to bet it's pretty rare. I have been writing checks with my ole bic pens for decades and have never had one stolen from the mail. I've had my entire checkbook stolen from a speed freak once but, that's a different story.

  • The reason we have our mail delivered to our house is not because we are lazy but because of disability and not being able to drive, having the mail box outside gives some kind of freedom to live on our own and not bother other people who are too busy to run our mail to the Post Office. Idiot

  • I have a better and more certain way to avoid check washing and other forms of fraud. NEVER put an outgoing check into your mailbox! Drop it into a USPS box. If you're too lazy to do that, then perhaps you deserve to have the wake-up call you'll get if this happens!

  • While I agree it is smarter to drop it into a USPS box, it is not fair to simply label a person lazy if they don't do that. And then saying they deserve what they get is just kind of mean.

  • That's bull.

Acetone would eat the whole thing. It's one of the strongest solvents made.

  • Actually it's not. My brother used to do it to support his crack habit and he spent quite some time in jail for it.

  • This is kind of what we used to do in high school to forge our readmits (the thing you need to get back into class after an absense). We used to finger nail polish. And most pens are't dye based, they are ink based

  • Judging from your spelling, maybe you should have spent more time in class rather than cutting class and trying to find new ways to forge the note needed to be re-admitted lol.

  • all pens are ink based (i've not seen one paint based, well in these days anyway), dye vs. pigment is the type of ink.

  • OIC. I guess I'm just a simple cave man, I thought dyes and inks were two different color stuffs. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I can stop spreading ignorant disinformation now.

  • time to start washing checks. yes, this thread just taught millions to do this. nice job.

  • And you don't think the people that would "start" washing checks based on this video either already are committing other types of crimes or have thought about it already? It just amazes me how many people really think this video is going to flip a switch in someone's mind, who may be an upstanding citizen, but now they're going to start a life of crime because this is so "easy." Come on. Really?

  • I don't believe in all that upstanding citizen bs, if you put an "upstanding citizen" in a situation where it's be homeless or rob a bank I guarantee he'll grab the gun and ski mask.

  • That's because you're not upstanding.
