Thank you for this. We adopted our pug Lola from a shelter. We discovered she was a breeder dog that was dumped in the January snow. Blind and nearly toothless she is the most wonderful companion. We know our days with her are number and we celebrate each day. She has helped our daughter over come her fear of dogs, made us laugh and know that if she could see she would protect our family to the ends of the earth. Please consider an older dog from a shelter or rescue. They are amazing!
My doxie Spencer was adopted from a neighbor in 2009 at the age of 10 1/2 because he had jealousy issues with their new baby. . A senior dog just wants your love and they will give back so much more. Sadly I lost him to illness on 4-19-11. His passing has left a hole in my life that I fill by spending time on rescue and shelter sites trying to get dogs adopted.into new homes by posting on Facebook. I think Spencer would approve. When the time is right, I'll rescue another senior Doxie or two.
This is such a lovely tribute. I adopted a senior kitty a few years ago from a shelter. And although she's fighting cancer now, she's affectionate and playful and has brought untold joy to my life. The idea that she may have been 'less desirable' because she wasn't a kitten just floors me. She's an amazing kitty and I'm so very glad she's come into my life.
OMG, I'm sitting here looking at my almost 15 yr old little girl with tears in my eyes.. She hasn't much more time on this earth and I just don't want to have to make 'that' decision which is soon coming. Her liver is not functioning like it should and meds are not working. I've had almost 15 years of daily laughs and smiles because of my Reba. How lucky I've been that she chose me all those years ago.
The memories kept flooding back to when I had two senior dogs, one a boxer who had a horrible life and when I went to pick her up at the shelter, she got in the car and got so close to me and laid her head on my shoulder the whole ride home. She was my sweet Jessica. The other senior was my CeCe, a french bulldog who had already lost most of her teeth, her little tongue peeked out of her mouth all the time, my two angels are in heaven now waiting for me, I miss them so much.
I lost my 14 y/o orange tabby Simba 9 months ago, so hard w/o your old friends presence, we were 10 years apart in age. Hard to think about w/o crying.
this is so beautiful. i miss my boy, bruno everyday. we lost him years ago, but the house still seems so empty without him. he loved to watch tv - and when he was sick, he and i would lie back-to-back and watch cooking shows together. he was my best friend. thank you for posting this. god bless you, and our four-legged senior friends.
Lost 4 dogs over the past year to old age and cancer....it is hard....and harder to say no when the next senior falls in to my life and asks to stay--for just a little while.
Thanks for sharing the video with us. karenfayekal: couldn't help but cry when I read those words to 'i am a senior dog' by karen lyons kalmenson. Short, beautiful, precious and to the point. Just like senior citizens, our senior animal friends need to be loved regardless of what their age. Tis video made me cry because it's a big reminder to us how many older pets out there get passed by due to their age. Older pets still know what love is, how to care & know how to be a best friend to us.
Thank you for your wonderful tribute. I too, rescue and foster seniors. They deserve to live out their remaining years with love and dignity too. One only has to visit the over-flowing shelters and hear all the excuses people give for discarding their pets. The senior dogs have even less chance of being adopted. I think I know how the person who dumped their dog in the shelter or abandon them on the streets will end up when they get old!
In tears. I just lost my senior girl last week. We only had her just over two years. We adopted her at 10 years old and I can say senior pets are great!!!!!! I love when I foster the older dogs.
Yeah to what joshua799850 said, tears looking at my 10 year old pittie. We did get a chi/yorkie mix at xmas..but I love my old girl still.
My nephew just put his old girl down at 14. He mourns still. He's is 26 and having a hard time with it. If we ever get a place big enough to foster dogs..I will foster senior dogs, in a minute.
Beautiful! Thank you for posting. I miss all my seniors I've loved and lost, and still grieve for them. We always adopt seniors; I made a decision years ago that I would take the dogs no one else wanted because they were "old". Puppies are small and cuddly, but seniors and cuddly too, and forever loving. Please, all, consider adopting a senior - they have so much to give!!
Soo beautiful!! Thank u for posting. I miss my Sr. girl VERY much!! I think her last few years were the best, she was loving & loyal till her last breath. I miss you Dana!!
i am a senior dog by karen lyons kalmenson Maybe there is some grey on my muzzle That does not mean I cannot nuzzle maybe my step has lost some spring but winter can be a beautiful thing maybe at times your voice I dont hear but I feel you, loud and clear you are my reason your love keeps me going through every season it just keeps on growing dont turn you back on me because Im not young I have heart enough for twenty And a great sense of fun
So beautiful It's quite sad that people only like puppies and how cute puppies are. They don't understand that puppies grow up and become older dogs, they don't stay little forever. I love all aged dogs. :)
