What do you do so the tire wont loose air once the rim is on and if you go over something like a speed bump? Like if I dont have tire slime... Because I live in europe, is there another resolution?
These are awesome! Thanks for posting, glad i found this. I've been looking to make something like this. Couple of questions. What size tire did you use for this vid? About how many screws per tire? Will any tire work, or do you have any recommendations on brand/type? Or just cheaper the better? Thanks again!
@wdtiger i just used junk tires. more tread is better in snowy track conditions, but cuts down on stud length... the amount of srews depends on the tread design.experiment with inner to outer stud bias (1 stud on every lug on inner, and every other lug on outside) i made some chevron ones that worked pretty good. i try to get 5 tread-lug row tires. dont use 12" wheels n tires...trust me.
can you tell what screws are you using and do you know how what size in mettric system these screws are (are these 6mm metal (roof) screws or 4mm ones)
and wich nuts in metric system fit ( nuts that have size 6 thread in metric system?) and are you using wood screws?
have you tested these tires. With no sealant (windsheid adhesive) im guessing every corner is going to be massive air loss. 1/4 20s at 1" 1/4 long normal size washers, blue nylon lock washers, some tough sealant, some tire slime and 30+ hours free time to build some tires.Once for some reason i sharpened a set of tires and got slower. whatever u do, dont use spare tires i did that one season, complete fail.
hell yeah u got to love the rush to get ready for ice racing
@ianhowe007 i don't use anything on the inside. i just spike'em, fill'em with goo, then fill them up to about 50lbs and roll them around the garage untill the green stuff stops coming out.
it sucked to pull out all the studs and then do this.. took forever lol... get my youtube message?? i linked you my facebook.. think we could give it a go this weekend??
@NismoZRS yeah, i sent u a friend request. no, their's only 4" of ice, we'd be swimming after a cople laps, if no imidiatly. after half a day we dig up 1' deep ruts in the corners.
@justin76bmw OK, I'll keep that in mind then... for a fairly used tire, a 1 1/4" should be plenty long enough I guess, I'm thinking of doing something a little heavier duty than screws on the drive tires though... I was thinking 5/16th gr 8 cap screws
@Rx7man i'm actualy trying smaller screws. i can't find tires that are the same circumfrance as the stock festiva12's. i had to go to 13's because 12's would completly disintigrate. 13's are tougher, but their's only 2 sizes, 1 rubs, and both are too tall, killing what little low-end power i have.
@NismoZRS mount the tire on the wheel with iter irons, don't bring it to a tire store, thei'll look at you like your'e retarded. use half a bottle of slime per tire. inflate it first to seat the bead, thain remove the valve stem core, and fill. (seen any cheep cars lately?)
@justin76bmw oh sweet, i see.. im gonna order a few 32oz valve size bottles.. as for cheap cars, im gonna try buying a geo metro for $300 with a smoked clutch this next weekend (im dead set on getting a metro :P).. but im keeping my eyes open for other deals.. ill definitely tell you if i find something
when i get the car it will be my winter daily driver, so when i go ice racing im gonna throw on the screw tires, take the head and tail lights out, and hope i dont get killed hahaha
@redleadr13 time? yup, you will get verry sick of doing it, beer helps. sorry for replying 5 times this new youtube layout sucks ballz, whats up with the fucking green OK, is it asking or telling!!!!!!!!!!!
@redleadr13 A: no, but they pull out sometimes takin a chunk of rubber with them. (use sticky rope tire patch things if not too bad) B: it depends how thick the tire is, but tighten them down almost to the tire body, squishing the tread. C: 1/4"x 1-1/2"or1-1/4".C: 1 per tread lug(front) about 1/2-3/4 as many(back) D:I've seen some go for 4years, depending on the tire, but they usualy meat a horrible end due to colision or over speed(75+) the ones I made on the vid survived all year+still on.
Justin a couple questions for you...When you build the tires like that a) do they break off the tip that is sticking out? b) how much is sticking out? c) what size screws are you using as in like a #12 or #14 etc...? d)how mwny total studs are you putting in? d) how long do they last..3 or 4 races or like a season or two?

@mikk55556 i'd say 6mm. sheet mettal screws, not wood, the mettal is different. wood=broken....

another thing to make it easier to see the pilot holes is to paint the inside of the tire with a light coat of white spray paint

@CoryNelson1971 eh, not worth the effort.

@NismoZRS make sure you build heavy duty front+rear bumpers(especialy rear)
justin76bmw 1 year ago
Interesting, good vid... now I have to do it... you think roofing screws would do well?
Rx7man 1 year ago
@Rx7man no you need sheet metal screws. the metal is harder.

@Rx7man the ones i use don't break. thei'll rip out of the rubber first.
