Why would you pay $30 for that when a drill works just as good. I would also like to see how that thing works with a big gob of steel on the tungsten.
and you do realise grinding wheels are composed of materials as hard or harder than wolfram right? Almost every oxide in a standard grind wheel is as hard as tungsten carbide (excludeing the base filler material). Alumium oxide for example is equal to hardness on the Moh scale.
@SweStuff94 Sorry mate, but we sharpen our tungsten electrodes at work using a normal belt sander.
What i would point out to alfametalsrl though, is you should ALWAYS sharpen the tip length ways, in other words, point the tip at the wheel. If you sharpen it across the wheel you will end up with a wandering arc.
@ghostynoises Hahaha so true.. I hate when people leave the divot int he grinder to mess up the next persons work because they don't want to dress the wheel.
The fastest way will give you a wandering arc on D/C. NOT good!! Plus I've seen TOO MANY "rookies", meaning 20 + yrs of experience sharpen their electrodes with a very blunt point, this is ONLY for high amperage applications! This really doesn't work well when welding thin material on D/C negative. When welding with A/C current on aluminum, NEVER pre-ball your electrode using D/C positive! It'll make your arc wander like crazy. Ask me a ?, I know everything :-) No joke! I only have 10yrs exp!!
@KurtisWM how are you gonna say that without knowing what material or thickness hes welding. i like my tungsten to draw blood i weld stainless tube 1/16" thick
Good boy, always sharpen so the grooves made by the wheel follow the length of the electrode, this helps the electron flow and arc stability during welding. Also it helps strenghten the tip. If you are a welder try grinding it both ways and see the difference it makes during welding :)
when you weld in aluminium you use a pure volfram electrode, this is blunt and you dont need to shape it, the electrode shapes itself as you are welding.
when you weld stainless or black materials you use a volfram electrode with some thorium in it, this needs to be sharpened
when you get your welding engineering degree, you will know what kumsin is talking about.
its not *wrong* to weld with a badly sharpened electrode (TIG) just like its not wrong to drive your call at 60 miles an hr in 2nd gear. its just efficient.
I use a drill.

bullshit thats tungsten of volfram in fact tungsten/volfram is allmost as hard as dimond and i dont think u can sharpend dimods like that...

@themainproblem like wearing a mask when sharping right?

@bigpencap Yes, a mask or some kind of dust collection. But maybe it's
not that dangerous. I don't know.

I have never had a problem with arc wander whilst using a balled tip. In fact, the AWS recommends that a balled tip be used for Al welding

I use a cordless drill to sharpen my tungsten. I have always used a pointy tip, what are the benefits to the more blunt tip?
SSnthe10s 3 years ago
a blunt tip spreads the heat over a larger area its mostly used in aluminum welding
thusalwaystotyrants 3 years ago
pointy tip is for mild steel and stainless etc blunt is used for aluminium welding
bozzza69 3 years ago

wtf is volfram?
jmackman 3 years ago
I thought the same thing, turns out it's the german word for tungsten? i love google
chimera91977 2 years ago
Yep, but even in the end all three electrodes look like they've been sharpened wrong. Should have a flat tip, not a pointy tip like it shows.
Carlz0rGD 3 years ago
the first way of sharpening the electrode is wrong... the second one was correct way of doing it.
kumsin 3 years ago
@kumsin its not really "wrong" but if you do it like second way the electrons could go better from tungstenelectrode to material.
