Murmur was / is a great album ....but this song ,more than the others has matured . When REM play old songs they invariably do a technically superior version of the original. Wether its to your taste or not is besides the point. ,But I dont think they could juice this up any more. This is a band 10-15 years ahead of even themselves.
WRONG bunnEgirl. Obviously you should cut your ears off and mail them to someone who will use them. It's the end of the world is by far their best album to date.
No doubt that's a Rickenbacker. I saw the band live at this time and, although Buck occasionally pulled out a Telecaster, he used a number of different Ricks.
I love the vibe that this album gives off. I think it's really optimistic!~ Like the songs portray sad situations (Such as this one.) but it shows that the people are still trying given the little resources they have!~^^^
it is a great song ..i graduated h.s. in 1983 ..rem has a trememndous place in my heart there music takes me back to those days of going away to school and having some of the greatest and most horrid times of my life...

such a wonderful song. One of the best acts to come out of the US in the 80s, seriously. What a great influence to everyone. Love this song and love Murmur, one of my favorite albums!
"oh, look at me and the new dirty words i learned today....i know, after I'm done popping my oily zits and jacking off since no one wants to hang out with me, i'll go post all the new words i learned on youtube!!!" ...you retard....
I always wondered if he was saying combien, so thank you for clarifying. I thought it might have just been garbled words meaning nothing, didn't think it was actually French.
"Not everyone can carry the weight of the world..." along with Perfect circle, sitting still and others, its an album you must listen to religiously ^^ hahah.
"Murmur" has been my favorite album for years, and this is my favorite song! This song takes me back to an amazing time and place in my life...thanks for posting.
Yeah me too GWBsux, and mostly happy times....good memories :) I was a little too young to catch it on first release (7 lol), first heard "Murmur" when i was 13, and in my opinion it remains the greatest thing they ever wrote. Music to me can transcend time and space lol.....it can take you back to a perfect moment in time :) Yeah thank you noizatu, great post ;)
This song enters my head sometime when I'm sad. The lyrics of some of REM's 80s songs were both despairing and hopeful at the same time. Now the line "Combiens du temps?" is gonna be running through my head for a while.
peter buck wasn't grossly underrated at the time...the cool folks all worshipped him...r.e.m. just got swept aside by crappy music later on. But, at the time, the cool kids knew how tight this band was.
Yeah. I LOVE this band. But sadly enough, all my fellow peers that go to my school haven't even heard of them. It's a sad world when u know everyone knows who you're talking about when you mention Britney Spears but give you a blank stare when u mention R.E.M.
It was made for the IRS best-of release Eponymous in 1988. Hence the "In 1987... preach preach preach" caption at the end and the huge sign for the Fox Network, which did not exist until 1986 (Murmer was released in 1983).
the girl at the beginning , pushing the dollys pushchair, is that a fabled cabbage patch doll? I think so, this could be another stipe trick. Cabbage Patch Dolls. or kids as they are now known were first mass marketed in 1983(same year as this song) and were also manufactured o Cleveland GA, near to where REM hailed from. You heard it here first people!
Amazing......
