  • Favorite horse ever!

  • LOVE SEATTLE SLEW!!!!

  • I can't believe my horse is his great grandson :O

  • @ILuvChocalate6 cool... O.O

  • Is there a Stakes race named after Seattle Slew? If not, is there a known reason?

  • Pacesetter For the Moment went on to have a Hall of Fame career as a show jumper. Not a Triple Crown, but it ain't hay either.

  • There's a book on Seabiscuit, a book on Secretariat... What about Seattle Slew?

  • Seattle Slew vs Spectacular Bid....That would have been one hell of a race!!!

  • Slew was awesome and turned out to be one hell of a sire !!!!!!!!!

  • @totallydoesntmatter u got that right!!!

  • i wonder where giboulee finished i remember this horse, he raced outta toronto canadian champ.

  • Slew was a great thoroughbred //The second best horse I ever saw in my lifetime-- He did what he needed to do in a race and he got the job done with minimal effort! I know chick anderson loved the horse and I believe this was his last televised derby call. / he's always on the top 10 all time list [or should be]

  • Slew was a big horse who always made it look easy - A big head, easy stride - I'm surprised he ever lost - Blame the jockey for that - except for the race after the Belmont[ which he never should have run in ]! Thanks for the video!

  • Best racehorse we've seen since Secretariat. No question.

  • I love Seatle Slew.I have a son of Seattle Slew and two grandsons of him.

  • This horse is the great great grandfather of my thoroughbred mare. I just found this out today and I see where she gets her speed from. Seattle slew is an amazing horse.

  • thats my horse's grandfather along with secretariat who is his great grandfather

  • My grandpa owned Flag Officer. He came in tenth, but hey, pretty cool to have had a relative that had a horse in the Derby. Seattle Slew certainly deserved the win, though. He was an incredible horse. My grandpa met him when he was a newborn. Too bad he doesn't still have racers.

  • Slew would be behind 14 lengths to Sceretariat in this race. Not blistering speed here. Still Slew was a great horse by any measure. Only of 11 horses to win the TC. Thats a super deal within itself IMO. I rank him in the top 5 of all time or without a doubt be in the top 10 best. He was better than Citation for sure with all due respect.

  • @rscarbro100 you can't just go by times// Slew would only do what was asked in any of his races- Don't know if he was better than Citation or Count Fleet but if he is mentioned in that group that is just -and deserved!

  • @lpvcrcd In the article titled 'Deathwatch Seattle Slew, T.C. winner/horse 28 a quote by Jean Cruguet.

"He was the fastest horse I ever rode," Cruguet said. "Maybe not the

greatest, but he was a speed demon, wouldn't let anyone ahead of him.

He was a miler, but had great heart to finish first no matter what the

    distance."

Cruguet has also made the statement that Hoist The Play was the best horse he ever rode.

I feel without a doubt he was better than Citation & the Fleet.

  • @rscarbro100 Actually, the horse's name was Hoist The Flag. Cruguet's opinions about Slew were curious, to say the least. Who knows what HTF might have done had he been uninjured. I think he would have been almost unbeatable, as his record had shown up to that point.

    Take care.

  • @cf1970 I knew it was Hoist the Flag But a mental error since I had so much on my mind. I just came on here to correct the mistake. Thanks so much. What makes you think his opinion was curious? Hoist the Flag only ran I believe 6 times hardly not enough racing to even make an opinion & lost one of those. Did run a 7 furlong in 1:21. I will give Cruguet the benefit of the doubt & see no reason why he would have lied about it.

  • @rscarbro100 I found Cruguet's opinion of Slew to be curiously on the negative side, especially stating that Slew was a pure miler, & not necessarily a stayer. I simply disagree with that statement; Slew was one of those rare horses that could do anything. IMHO.

Yes, Hoist The Flag only ran 6 times, & was amazing, but I never implied that Cruguet lied about anything. I've read all about his statements on both horses. He seemed somewhat underwhelmed with Slew, & it eventually cost him the mount.

  • @cf1970 Jean said about the same in the articles from Los Angeles Times. Quote:

"Seattle Slew was a top mile horse with a lot of speed," Cruguet said. "That speed carried him farther as the races got longer. I thought he was better as a 4-year-old than he was at 3." He also stated his best race was with Mac Diarmida in that D.C. International race at Laurel.

  • @rscarbro100 I'm annoyed at why you felt it necessary to post the direct quote by Cruguet...as I said, I never doubted the truth of any of his statements, I just don't agree with some of them. That said, he was absolutely right about Slew being short for the Paterson. Thankfully, Cordero turned out to be a great replacement.

Cruguet saying his best race was aboard Mac Diarmida is surprising. Great thrill for him, no doubt, but the Triple Crown had to be bigger. Sounds like sour grapes to me.

  • @cf1970 My, My you are very sensitive. I don't believe it was sour grapes. Read the inerview he had with Cynthia Brisola published in nov/dec 2009.at the International Horse Racing Digest. He was asked this very question. You know he lost his ride by the statement he made why Slew lost at Patterson about the training. It is some good reading. He said Slew could have won the Travers And would have won everything. Don't think he had anything against the horse.

  • 1. @rscarbro100 Sensitive, no. Annoyed/confused at your insistence on posting a direct quote, yes. I really didn't know if you were being snarky with me or not. What I am really tired of is remaining mostly silent, and then when I do show any sort of disagreement, I am often psychoanalyzed to be sensitive or even insensitive. Am I not entitled my own opinion? I meant that his comments smacked of sour grapes towards the handlers, not Slew. It comes off as petty to disregard the Triple Crown wins.

  • @cf1970 I believe Cruguet was not imply that Mac Diarmida was a better horse than Slew at all. Just a better race not the biggest race he had. He would have said different I think if he was aboard Slew when he lost to Exceller by a nose.I watched that race on youtube he had with Mac. It was a very good race But nowhere compared to the JCGC. The rides he had with Slew were fairly easy.

  • @rscarbro100 Agreed. Cruguet didn't imply that Slew was inferior, he stated that the competitive nature of the '78 DC International was better than anything he'd ever experienced on the track. I understand that. What I don't understand is why he didn't think Slew wasn't much more than a pure miler. He loved to run on the lead, but I think Slew could have won from anywhere; he was that good. Yes, that '78 JCGC blows the '78 DC Int. away in comaprison; that race is one of the best of all time.

  • @cf1970 We will probably disagree more than agree But that is not a problem with me at all. What annoys me is when some on here makes some claims based on theories when there is pretty good facts out there that totally knocks there theories into the water. I am a fan of Slew, Secretariat, Easy Goer, Dr. Fager & many more. Like I said before you are a very fine minded person. I do not want any of these horses or any to be distorted. Slew was a stayer. Cont.

  • @rscarbro100 Dr Fager had take you breath away speed. A horse that was as fast as he was is amazing that he could get 10f. He was not Artax, but Artax coule not get a mile either

  • @cf1970 He more than proved that in the 1 1/2 mile JCGC race with Exceller. He seem to be more of a miler as a 3 year old But was without a doubt in my mind was much stronger as a 4 year old. I think his record shows that. I have made excuses for Slew & many horses of why I think they lost. IMO Exceller was in no way a better horse than Slew. Slew ran to fast a pace in that race, way to fast And even though he almost won there just was not quite enough gas left in him to win. He was a stayer.

  • @cf1970 I might also post the statement made by Angel Cordero about Seattle Slew.

Quote: Of all the horses to ride if my life depended on it to win I would take Slew. Hope that one did not annoy you.(smile). You have been a very fair person here And appreciate it very much.

  • 2. @rscarbro100 Fair Enough. I ought to get sleep more and clear my head a bit. Forgive me for my confusion at your intentions. Cordero was bang on with his estimation of Slew; he was the best horse he was ever blessed to ride. He'd certainly be a great option to have if one's life depended on it. I know who I would pick, with all horses at their level best, though. (grin).

    Peace.

  • my horseback riding instuructor trained seattle slew

  • Pacesetter For the Moment went onto a Hall of Fame show jumping career, including an Olympic silver medal, I think.

  • I love the Slew. He was so gracefull and beautifull.

  • Excellent. I remember this well. He is one of the great horses of all time.

  • he won that at a blistering speed. and he was cut like a knife

  • Great Memories!

  • i may be alone on this but in my opinion secretariat still holds the record for the most badass race horse of all times.

  • The reason he was good was because he had Dressage training.

He learned to work from behind, which resulted in a powerful stride.

While all the other race horses are on their forehands, he is pushing strong.

  • my horse is grandson to seattle slew

  • which grandson to slew do you have? i have his great-grandson, and i'm doing a bit of research.

  • RIP Jim McKay

  • I loved Seattle Slew, he was my favorite horse. He was a real fighter.

  • Beautiful statement!

  • 2nd greatest derby win ever, behind Secretariats.

  • my mum was at that race! she has millions of pics of seattle slew and all the other pics. This video is ttly coolio! Horses rock! :)

  • Slew made it look so easy.

  • very cool

  • My cousin owns one of his granddaughters, Cindy Slew Who, and my friend has another of his granddaughters and she is the exact color that he was.

  • we have a colt thats daddy is benton creek, momma is a grandaughter of mr prospector and its grandpa on its dads side i think is seattle slew hes a thouroghbred

  • i have his granddaughter skedaddle seattle

  • Excellent points! The Slew has really never been given the true credit that he deserves as a racehorse.

  • Good points about his early speed and stamina.

The Slew was quite the monster horse. Superb ability, strangely under-rated.

I rate him in the top 4 of all-time.

    Take care.

  • RUN, DUSTY, RUN!!! Sorry, but I had to toss out that lil tribute. Hes my second favorite "second horse"...right behind Sham. I would absolutey love it if someone posted videos of Sham or Run, Dusty, Run!

  • Wow, I thought I was the only Run Dusty Run fan! It's good to see that I am not alone! Loved this horse and jockey, Darrel McHargue!!!! I too would love to see any of this colts videos! Please ! :)

  • I picked Run, Dusty, Run to win it all in 77. Of course, I was only nine years old at the time, so I was hardly what you would call a TB expert. I simply did what a boy did to choose. I watched the horses on their journey to be loaded in the gate, and picked the best looking one with the coolest name (Run, Dusty, Run of course). Didnt choose too bad I guess. Almost but not quite. Peace.

  • I was nine as well when I remember this race so vividly as if it was yesterday! My sister, ten then, picked Seattle Slew to win and the rest is history. But RDR has and always will be one of my favorites, along with Vigors. Do you remember him?

  • Cool video. This, by the way, was caller Chic Anderson's last Derby before he moved to NYRA in time for Slew's Belmont.

  • GREAT VIDEO!!!! Only Seattle Slew could have come back after such a slow break, to win so easily. Just one word: INCREDIBLE. I have published a book on one of Slew's greatest and most beloved sons-SWALE. It is entitled: GRIT AND VALOR: THE STORY OF SWALE. In 1984, he won the Florida Derby, Kentucky Derby, and Belmont Stakes.

  • Great Memories!
