  • Hey Luke can I have your MK1 snes prototype

  • Boy your tv you have come along way since this

  • i like the snes music over the genesis, but this game pissed me off cause of response of the controls. But overall i still love it cause i grew up with it :)

  • for me the music on snes was better then the arcade it kinda had a retro chinese tribal feel going on

  • i think that there were originally 2 versions of mortal kombat one being called Mortal Kombat: Arena Edition and Mortal Kombat: Competition Edition

  • TMK I'm a big mk fan and was wondering what the diffences are from the prototype and the end version???????

  • Mortal Kombat 1+4Kids=Mortal Kombat SNES

  • @PKWhopper lmfao

  • What exactly does the adapter do?

  • Genesis version "felt" more like the arcade. While the SNES version looked the part, but felt like shit.

  • @tjprodigy. I agree. And on top of having more frames and therefore fluid animation, the SNES also sounded better.

  • @kombatiser i agree the gb is horrible, but this version had infinite combos that everyone could do. That just ruins this version.

Get your opponent in the corner and land an uppercut and then mash LP to constantly juggle them to death before they fall. You couldn't do that in any other version. Your character recovers from the animation of throwing the uppercut way to quickly. It's supposed to hold you in that pose while the opponent falls to the ground. There's other game breaking bugs too.

  • This would have been one of the best mk1 ports like mk2 snes, but there was one major flaw: NO BLOOD AND FATALITIES ! >:(

  • Sadly, I never got to play the original MK in the Arcades till after I played the SNES version. For a long time, I foolishly thought the SNES was a good port of the arcade just sans the blood. Then I played the arcade and found out just how bad the controls were on SNES. Then I bought the Genesis version. The graphics and sound were horrid, but it played like the arcade and I eventually became hooked on it. After that, I never played the SNES version again. Thankfully MK2 SNES was the shit!!!

  • @1979davecub : really? maybe your controller was bad. i play snes version and it is fine.

  • @JLAW806 It's playable and fine...unless your familier with the arcade. Once I did, it's clear the game play is a different animal. There is a delay in executing moves, hit detection seems wonky, and special moves like Subzero's freeze, Rayden's lightning toss, etc. are a crap shoot. I recently pulled out my snes just to see if I still remembered correctly, and I did. Same with my emulator version. SNES usually wins the day for me, but not this time. At least Genesis MK1 felt right.

  • @JLAW806 Oh, and SNES MK II played just fine. It STILL does!! ; )

  • @1979davecub : i think the bad version of first mortal kombat is in sega cd , because worst lagging when you input fatality command, and shang tsung morph. unplayable.

  • @1979davecub : i think the worst mortal kombat 1 is sega cd version.worst lagging. unplayable.

  • i never found ' glitchy and buggy' in snes version. the one who bug me is pac man picture in one of mortal kombat stage.

  • this version is not so bad. but the gameboy version suck

  • It would have been good if they added Blood, Fixed the shitty laggy fucking controls and stopped the Ai from spamming their moves (Kano especially)!

  • thats a sweet tv i want one to play old games on

  • It wasn't really that terrible, given that there wasn't any blood or a few fatalities changed up, but the gameplay was very smooth and wasn't that glitchy to me.

  • @Elman247 : that's right. i dont know, why TMK says that buggy... mk 1 snes, work perfect for me..

  • I love how whenever you review a bad MK game, you always require some alcohol. That, my friends...is a true gaming hero.

  • There was one really funny glitch you could use on Goro. If you froze him as Sub-Zero and used sweeps on him, he wouldn't unfreeze. Then you could cap it off with an uppercut for maximum damage. Too bad the controls were so godawful that Sub-Zero's freeze move only works 25% of the time.

  • hey man no offence or anything but that mk prototype cart is just a pirated mk1 cart. if it was a genuine prototype it would have a blank label with minimal txt and the japanese super famicom proto's had a white label with japanese handwriting on them. also see those 2 slots on the back of the cart at the bottom? those are so it will fit in a US snes console. japanese carts didnt have those slots. the jap carts were identical in shape as the pal ones even tho they wont play on a pal console

  • @WickedClownNZ I live in Australia not Japan. The Western countries get prototypes as well. And MK is a western game.

  • @TotalMK yeah i understand that western countries also get proto carts man. but mortal kombat being an american made game would have had its proto in an ntsc shaped cart. all i was trying to say was no games made outside of japan ever had a label on the back saying super famicom. as super famicom was the japanese name for the snes. i wasnt meaning to be ofensive dude. just i collect alot of proto carts for snes/sfc/megadrive and none have ever had a colour label on the front

  • @TotalMK wooow !! vives en Australia y alla compras la cerveza de aqui corona mexicana, no sabia que alla se vendia tambien. increible !!

  • I have that same controller and it bailed on me!

After I use it for awhile the B button turns into the START button.

Its some sort of malfunction im guessing. Has yours had any problems?

  • Raidens Fatality on SNES is one of my favorites of all time :)

  • Respond to this video... you got that right , mortal kombat 2 was better than this crappy version

  • hey....i loved your reviews on all the mortal kombat games...I want to challenge you in a game. To bad your across the world man....I was obsessed with these games back in the day...especially part 2 and umk3....no one around here plays these games anymore....I want a challenge!

  • There was, however, a game genie code that turned the gray sweat red, but it didn't change its more mist-like appearance, and had no effect on the fatalities.

  • "and if theres one thing you need... its booze.. because this game, is FUCKING HORRIBLE!"

    LOL

  • greAt review man! everything you said was true. nintendo butchered this classic masterpeice.

  • @Tekken6Community Tekken sux.

  • @TotalMK lol i got thumbed up by 18 australian faggots, that WILL NEVER PLAY THE NEW MORTAL KOMBAT L M F A O !!!!!!111111111

  • @TotalMK dude the new scorpion fatality is block up up

  • @TotalMK ; because you never play it so you say that is suck.

  • @Tekken6Community

    LOL pwned

  • @Tekken6Community your an asshole this guy is a legend

  • @Tekken6Community What would you know about Aussies?

  • I like the SNES version :/

  • I mean.,. I guess I just love this game because its the first game i ever owned and beat. I was only 3. So I guess is i had a 3 year olds knowledge of gaming, this would be pretty awesome

  • You should post a vid showing al the differances in the prototype!, Beta stuff in the MK games allways interest me.

  • i agrre sega version was better :D

  • oh come on. you seriously think the sega version had better gameplay? I grew up on sega, but I would have gladly taken the snes + game genie "blood" code over it.

  • @quirkphinder1 a. there was no blood code. b. Ed Boon has even stated in video interviews the Sega version is better. Play both the SNES version is glitchy as hell.

  • @TotalMK I was referring to the game genie code that altered the color values for the sweat. The genesis version felt cheap and unauthentic, glitches or not. Ed was responsible for the biggest asshole AI in history, he's not one to talk about what's quality

  • @TotalMK : glitchy? never on my version of mk1 snes. sorry, maybe your snes cart or console make that glitchy.

  • @TotalMK He's probably talking about the Game Genie blood code, hence the quotations. Despite the lack of gore and control issues, I too preferred the SNES version over the Genesis because 1) I couldn't stand the Genesis version's sound/music, 2) the graphics sucked, and 3) the gore looked awful. On a side note, every MK game has glitches. I found TUG amusing.

  • @TotalMK the snes version is better with sound and music and graphics but the genises is good because it has blood well if u have the code

  • @quirkphinder1 No just that, pal, the SNES version wasn't worst by don't having blood and gore, the reason was since the controls were bad, the gameplay was different (the combos from the arcade and genesis versions don't work), the air attacks didn't the same effect as in the other versions... the only good things it had compared to the Genesis version were better colors, more sprites on the chars and better sound... but the gameplay, the most important thing, was bad :S

  • Another good time to have beer is if you watch a Videogame Film directed by Uwe Boll

  • "... and if you're playing MK1 on SNES, theres one thing you need....and that...is booze!" Great Line, love your reviews!

  • The easiest person to do that trip bug on this version is my name sake Johnny Cage.

  • what do you drink?

  • Beer. Corona to be exact.

  • @ShinOnigashima

ahh thanks...i think its better to drink shoktong while playing mk 1 snes

  • in the 0:21 to 0:30 is the beer Corona? :P this the beer sale in the Mexico!

  • this was the first mk game i played on and this was the console i played it on

  • Here is some helpful advice, if you see a copy of the SNES version, just destroy it. Just throw it in a volcano or something like that. Better yet, bury it and forget about this game. I almost bought this game for 2 bucks! Man, what a waste! I wouldn't even buy this game for free.

  • this version was not that bad but it was pretty messed up for sure

  • why did they fuck it up if it was such a great game coz like u should put in a code 2 get blood that would be cool and lik for the people who hate the blood just switch it off and people who love it on this lik u should beable 2 switch it on

  • "Super Cartrigde?" More like Super Dodge :p

  • This game sucks compared to arcade and even genesis. Yeah the graphics are nice but it's so sluggish. Want to find a terrible game bug in this game? I can't remember if it's 2 or 3 characters in a row but whatever. At the start of the game, get a double flawless victory using only jumping kicks. Do that again with 2 or 3 opponents in a row. After that the cpu will be able to throw you repeatedly in a loop for the win no matter where you are and it can't be avoided. Laughably bad.

  • i have probably already said this before but i'll say it again, why do so many people hate this version? sure there is no blood, but that doesnt stop me from saying that its an excellent port and almost as playable as the arcade version

  • ^totally agreed. Most people reduce MK to blood n` Fatalities.

  • @100perfectmk

Because the controls sucked. One of my friends used to have it and he told me the controls were terrible.

  • This version needed a lot of tweaking in the gameplay department and controls (holy SHIT delayed), and of course gore, but otherwise this one was pretty accurate.

The only thing the Genesis version really had going for it was more responsive controls, better gameplay mechanics, and the blood code. Otherwise it was rather lame. Ah well. Blood sells!

  • wow take a look at that tv lol

i enjoyed the snes version, but i was also 4 when i started playing. blood wasnt a factor for me. to me the fighting is still good. i guess im a just a nintendo freak. i wouldnt really call this a review, more of a bashing, but you did say the graphics and sound was great and i do agree. keep up the good work.

  • the SNES and Game Boy versions were both as shit as each other in me eye all cause of the no gore thing nintendo had going back then(which soon went when there was a chance for Doom to come to SNES in my eye)

  • yeah the collision detection was horrible but like you totalmk i bought this version for the music

  • Comparing this game to the Genesis version, lets say that I put my thumb in my ass. Then to make it acceptable, I spray it with odor eliminator. This game has been censored to shit. The blood from other versions is gone. The electric fatality has been altered. The spine rip has been replaced with a backhand. Oddly enough the burning and pit fatalities remain, but it feels really out of place. No non violent game I've seen has a spike pit. Oh well, the Genesis versions better. This version SUCKS.

  • Hey TMK, if you could, post the protype differnces please? I'm very intrested in prototype versions of games, and MK to boot, there aren't a whole lot of proto MK information out there.

  • The Snes verison had to keep the cool graphics but no blood

  • Rubbish...the game play was GARBAGE

It needed serious balance work not just GORE.

  • damn right the hit detection was shit

  • i dont think its the worst home version of mk1, just not the best

  • the pit part is they dont land on the spiks cos it makes a floor hit sound not a stabbing sound

  • LOL i love the look of the snes you have, i have it aswell. It's better than the US version

  • i agree

  • i actually like the snes version. I had only a snes when MK came out. And I liked the music, graphics and overall mood of this game. But yeah.. no blood and the gameplay was kinda bad.

  • Let me show you some more of this edited bull shit.

LOL, I always loved the no pit blood.

  • LMFAO. nice introduction. Loved it. This game is horrable.

  • "Competition Edition" might refer to how the SNES version has more options for two player. You can make it hand-to-hand (no special moves) and there's a handicap thing where you can alter how much damage moves do to player 1 or 2, to even things up for less experienced players.

  • A good theory but all the versions have those options even the ones that don't say Competition Edition...lol

  • You should do the Mega CD one.

  • + I found on the SNES MK version the sweep glitch doesn't work on Kano,Raiden or Sub-Zero.

  • That what retro games are to be played on, duh.

  • This TV is one of the best ever made. You can't get these anymore :D

  • lol yea im jealous :p

  • great comment, did your gay husband ask you to write that?

  • There's an amusing uppercut glitch on the SNES version as well, basically just trap your opponent against one of the sides, uppercut him, and then uppercut him again before he lands....you can keep doing that until you win, the game engine doesn't push you backwards to stop you doing it or anything like that. The gameplay of Mortal Kombat really is a complete mess on the SNES. Nice music like you said though.

  • if the only reason you bought this is for the music, then you are better off to go with the mega cd version, if you put that into a cd player you will get the full track list, at least i think so

  • ahah Corona not only the beer that is miles away from ordinary but it makes MK 1 on SNES seem miles away from yanking all your hair out.

The graphics were good, the music did resemble that of the arcades but the game play fell apart like a Chinese motorcycle. Nintendo had a real tendency to shoot themselves in the foot back in the day. I also always think SNES was aimed at a younger less diverse audience sometimes, but that's my opinion anyways. Good review, shitty game.

  • my snes version has blood i beleive. wtf???

  • is this your 2nd worst mk port?? (beaten by mk advance)

  • Yeah, this port was complete ass. MK without blood is not MK at all.

  • fun with mk1 on snes omg that game sucks ed boon what are you doing!

  • Ed Boon didn't work on the SNES version, that was Probe development. :)

  • opps...Probo was Sega, SNES version was Scuptured Software.

  • play the plug'n'play version

its fully uncut almost exactly the same as the arcade version just no background movement

its the best port so give it a go aye

  • in mame this game is hard because they are always blocking

  • the arcade version it's good

  • This Game Is Good!

  • i dont care about the music, so thats not why i think its good, its not bad at all if you ask me

  • It kind of sounds like you like Mortal Kombat Advance better then this!

  • Goro Glitch

Perform Rayden's fatality on the third endurance stage in a one player game. Goro will appear silver colored and flashing.

  • I have fond memories of MK1, just wanted to see it again, and could have done without the incessant bitching in this "review."

  • i remeber mortal kombatone on the snes you couldnt pause it. but it was a great game

  • MK I is the start of Mortal Kombat. It's just a classic game. II is the best. the Super Nintendo Entertainment System rocks with MK.

  • snez

    its Super Nintendo

  • Super Nintendo = Super.NES = SNES.

    So STFU :P

  • lol your logic owns

  • dont get me wrong ive watched all your vids and loved every moment of it just funny the way you say super nes SNEZ

  • exactly the earlier arcade versions had a sweep bug ... especially Raiden ... if he was frozen in the middle of re-transforming by Sub-Zero you could just sweep him to death.

  • i'm sure glad nintendo wised up and gave MK2 blood and the proper fatalities.

  • Thats odd, my snes looks different.

  • It's an Australian Super Nintendo. :)

  • I like yours beter lol.

  • i got 2 of em the one u have tmk. im from ireland ones by older bothers that he hade for years and others mine and he gave killer instinct for mk3 for trade with his freind and his freind never gave killer instinct back so from there on i played mk non stop!!

  • thats an awesome one :)

  • Boos?

..Wow now I really like you stupisAss!

YourFucking dumb thinking we are going to say that your cool!

Just show us what you are going to talk aboutFagit"

  • try playing the mega drive version your whole life without blood, THAT is horrible, i never knew the blood code existed, when i had it

and about the pit fatality, no gory detail, but at least it can be done on this version

  • It can be done on Genesis too. Do it with the blood code.

  • yes, but what im saying is imagine if the that version did not have a blood code, then compare it to the snes version

  • Oh, I see. Yeah, I suppose it could be worse.

  • It ain't that bad.

  • i lol when u pulled out the beer

  • i have this for the ps2 and i dont know how to do a fatalitie can some one help?

  • Blood Code: ABACABB (at "Definition Of Code" screen).

Cheat Menu: DULLARD (Down,Up,Left,Left,A,Right,Down). At "Press Start" screen.

Does NOT work on GAMEBOY/SNES versions.

  • yeh this game does have some bugs an has shitty gameplay.. but remember it was made in the early 90s what do u expect lol back in the 90s it would of seemed awesome, but these days it seems like we kinda compare this game to the games which are made today with awesome graphics an gameplay ect...

  • can't you turn on the blood with a code?

  • Only the Sega Genesis,Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear versions have that option.

  • I'm fortunate enough to have owned a Sega Genesis when the first 3 MK games came out, so I got all the blood!

  • my snes mk1 had blood is that normal or is it a hack

  • No versions of MK1 on SNES ever had blood, you must of been using the Action Replay to make the sweat turn red.

  • i was really young about 5 when my mom bought it i guess it was an action replay or some kind of hacked cartridge all i knew mine had blood

  • I think you are thinking of the Sega Genesis version. SNES has never had blood, and there is no 'hacked' cartridge that has fatalities cause they need to be programmed by the makers and they never were.

  • ur wrong TMK the characters do not land on the spikes cos it does a floor hitting sound

  • Oh, and there's also a hand-to-hand option that disables special moves in two-player matches.

  • Although it was probably just a marketing gimmick, the "Competition Edition" also may have something to do with this version's handicap option for two-player matches. You can adjust how much damage each player takes from moves, allowing a less skilled player to have a better chance against a more skilled player.

  • the game is not that bad imo

  • mk1 for snes is horrible

  • only if your not using cheats...:D

  • was the censors on all of the console mk1 games

  • dasin, only MK 1 for SNES and Game Boy were censored. All other MK 1 versions were uncensored, and all the SNES ones were uncensored too starting with MK II.

  • i almost shit my pants with rage when i saw there were no real fatalities -.- worst mk game ever.......besides mk mythologies sub zero :D

  • I think that its ok, but other than that, its utter crap!

  • Wow. So bad it requires alcohol. You thought it was that bad?

  • he really likes fatalitys

    which is sad censored`

  • The finishers were pretty bad I must admit. I Guess because this was the first version of MK that I played, I didn't really realize how horrible they were.

  • You should do an arcade review its much better.

  • This guy is awesome! :-) Thanks man.

  • u should show the whole screen of the tv so we can see the game.

  • my copy looks nothin like dat

  • Mortal Kombat on SNES was censored cause nintendo had an little antigore thing, untill they had the chance to bring doom and killer instinct to the SNES

  • No blood = NO BUYS!

    Genesis > SNES

  • The MK rebuttal to the AVGN

  • I thought the Genesis/Megadrive version was alot better and to me I thought that the music was actually better.

  • what are the minor differences between the mk1 games?
