Green Day were punk and in some way still are, with their social commentary and what not. However, other than the fact they were both trios and played punkyish music, they are not similar. Green Day are more influenced by Husker Du, The Ramones and The Replacements, whereas The Jam were Moddish Punks (sort of a cross between the Sex Pistols and Small Faces). I'm a fan of both bands though.

GD's Wiki mentions them, but places most emphasis on his love of The Replacements and Husker Du, while also giving detail to the Ramones and The Who (both of whose influence is no secret). And I still have yet find a source where GD mentions The Jam.
