It IS missing from music now... This was one of the sexiest dance songs at the time... The Garage, The Underground, Ice Palace, wow we just were all together back then groovin and having a good time... and things didn't COST so much back then either!
What I truly like in this version, is that the sound is not overcompressed, sice it's just the beginning of 80s and the "loudness war" hadn't started yet.
WHEN I HEARD THIS SONG FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE IN 2011, MAN, THIS SONG DID IT FOR ME....JUST LISTEN TO THE BEAT, LISTEN TO HER VOICE.....HOW CAN THIS SONG NOT BE POPULAR TIL THIS DAY....BETTER BELIEVE I BUMP THIS IN MY CAR EVERYDAY, FULL BLAST!!!
Just saw her live in my hometown of visalia tonight and she got down! Her husband used my fender deluxe guitar amp and ran it through the house. Got done with an after party with her and her peps and she was one cool woman!!! Im glad i finally got to meet her, now to meet Carl Carlton in 2 weeks!
@ o2thaj619 and blissmermaid. SUGA FREE also sampled this track on his song FU** WIT YOU off his SUNDAY SCHOOL album, it's probably my fav version, so fonky!
is there a re edit out? I heard someone blasting this in NYC the other day but it had a more break beat sound to it with much fatter bass drums. A class song!
@ProtaJ I had a big crush on her when she use to do "Showtime at the Apollo". Check her out in one of my videos introducing "Mary Wilson - You Keep Me Hangin On"
I spotted two celebrities in this video some people may know. Suzzanne Douglas she played the mother in the PARENT HOOD, THE INKWELL and JASON'S LYRIC and the other celebrity is Keke Sheppard from THE APOLLO. I know both of them are dancers.
yea i knew that about janet....i love janet...but beyonce' and janet SAMPLE LIKE CRAZY!...and keke shephard...i knew about and suzanne...i thought she looked familiar....suzanne was just on the monique show!
I saw her on unsung too!! And I'm really surprised that homegirl still has it!! most of the people on unsung can barely perform and carry a note today. I wish Evelyn could get a contract and come out with more music. She's such and inspiration to me and my music career.
Check out my song - No Rides on my page. I'm keeping the funk alive!! Yep yep
oh hell yeah! This is the jam. I remember cruising Highland to this jam. Brings back good memories. I still bump this and other old school songs. Old School NEVER gets old unlike stupid songs nowadays. lol.
Ha! I saw her on UnSung earlier and this made me come to her song. I really like this song, but this video. . .wow! lol I agree with @MrSexxxy20 :P Good times though!
Hey did anyone realize that "Ms. KE KE SHEPARD" from the "APOLLO" is dancing in the back! I noticed it on unsung!........I STILL LUV EVELYN! VOICE IS THE DEAL!
Unsung kept mentioning what an excellent live performer she is. This is an understatement, I've seen very few artists that can take over a stage the way she can. Must see will not be disappointed.
This is true talent...sadly it's what's missing in music now....She is really a great performer. Fantastic presence and such a soulful powerful voice...
I simply LUV this song!! Hell, I simply LUV Evelyn King!!! So many great memories come rushing back to me whenever I hear any of her music. When she teamed up with Kashif to produce her.....it was a match made in heaven!
Watching recorded Unsung story of Evelyn (love that show) made me what to watch this and post it on FB. She's always been, and still is, an amazing singing start, pure talent. I have much respect for her.
I've been corrected through e-mail folks. LOL! This track hit no. 1 on the R&B charts in 1981 not Billboards POP charts. She only rose to 40 on Billboard. Shocking, this should have been much higher on the Pops. Oh well..............still a classic!! :)
The industry knew they made some cheap videos back then, simple dance moves, lousy backgrounds, & a lot of lip sync, no more than a thousand dollars that they spend!!
@pbb228 Funny you mentioned that I caught the last 2 minutes I might watch a replay @ 1. i was only a baby when her music came out but i wish artist today would make hits like this.
@kolense So true I just saw the story of Evelyn Champaign King on UNSUNG. GOD I love that show. After every new UNSUNG episode I come to youtube to revive my memory and start reminiscing about the good days. Love the 80's. And yes that is the actress Suzzane Douglas (right) as one of Evelyn's back up dancers in this video. Never new Suzanne got her start in these early videos as a dancer. I was a senior in highschool when this track hit no. 1 on the R&B and POP charts in 1981. 80's forever!!
Miss 'Cahampagne' hit #40 in Billboard, 9-12-81. Hey, y'all, be sure to catch Evelyn on 'Unsung' on TVone, monday night, 7-11. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!
This song reminds me of the jams that they would play on Everybody Hates Chris! Miss that show! Peace and what a dance jam! They need to bring back the days!
Warning!!!...This is what happens when you get your cousin Shay-Shay...(who you owe $35, and still ain't paid it back)... to choreograph/SABOTAGE your music video..

I never appreciated this song until recently. Oftentimes heavy production tends to weaken a strong singer's voice, but wow - strong production and equally strong voice. I love it!
But, eh, the dancers on the video are amusing...lol.
even though im not from this generation i can quite easily appreciate that this music is better than the shit floating around now

Does anyone else do this? I often compare...no not compare but liken or associate old school artist voices to the new generation. I can't help but match up Evelyn Champagne King to Keisha Coles. And is that Kiki Shepard dancing in the background on the right? You know, she used to host Showtime at the Apollo.

Just to make things clear: I’m afraid you are wrong. This track was recorded on a Fairlight Computer sequencer…

Sounds better played at the right speed instead of too fast as heard here.

I never appreciated this song until recently. Oftentimes heavy production tends to weaken a strong singer's voice, but wow - strong production and equally strong voice. I love it!
But, eh, the dancers on the video are amusing...lol.
