Don't care for the profanity, but I do like his style. It is also wise that he puts ear plugs in his ears. All drummers should do this when they are playing on unmuted shells. :)
Jojo is explaining that in music there should be no competition. he is using the drums to explain this. If your guitar player is soloing for example would you start soloing on top of him. No you would play something to compliment it. Just the same as if you were soloing in like a jazz context or a fustion context. the other musicians wouldnt start soloing over your drum solo they would play parts to compliment it.
I dont see that at all. if anything he is the opposite here. **demonstrating that being cocky and arrogant (stick tricks, overplaying, misuse of chops) is not how to be a musician.
Just take my word for it. You are wrong - it has nothing to do with "simplicity". Just think about it. He is talking about a musical phrase that you can recognize and feel, versus a whole bunch of notes that do not make musical sense. This is not about being simple or not being simple, it is about making sense musically.
thats actually what i ment, i just did'nt really use the right word....but in some way it is simpler, that is what he means, to be musical you don't always have to play fast and complicated to be musical
exactly; in his example of trying to show you're better than another one demonstrating by being quicker and so on, just speak with your instrument, give it some thought and spirit. You might not end up showing you are more skilled, but you'll show that your understanding and musical semantics are deeper - and the average ear will pay more attention to you instead of listening to someone making a mess out of his own skills
I agree. you can play a super-busy, note filled bohemeth of a phrase and it sounds musical just as a half -note phrase that is stripped down to almost nothing and sounds musical. They both are heard in the 3rd person as something that is heartfelt and makes sense musically. Direction, feel, sound, and purpose. simplicity is not important in soloing as much as, phrasing someting that people can feel and understand much as you feel and understand
exactly right buddy, Jojo was simply making a point, its not how many chops or tricks you can display, its how to use your all your tools in your toolbox in a musical context, not competing.
so really what your saying is, now he has a haircut....because, even though he did look like tramp, he was so skilled, and he is as good now as then, technique wise......but now he has better musical ability in my opinion
Not his hair ( who gives a shit about that ), just his attitude during this clinic. I don't know if he wasn't feeling the audience or what, but he's way too good of player to be so abrasive, and not the cool JoJo we've all come to know and love.
He's just acting kind of arrogant and cocky in this vid. I'm a huge fan of his and his ego's mellowed out quite a bit since then, but his playing is still incredible!
