  • Does anybody know how long a torn hip labrum takes to fully recover about?

  • I have to get 3-4 anchors for a pretty nasty tear from a Rugby injury... anyone know how long the discomfort is post surgery? When will I be able to use my arm normally again? How long the surgery is? Thanks.

  • I had labrum surgery almost 6 weeks ago. They put in three anchors then restitched the labrum back in place. Pain only lasted a day or two, then mild discomfort a few days after that. Have been exercising since day 1, walking, but am now adding a few pick-ups here and they, plus kicking drills in pool and physical therapy at home. Very glad I had it done. I am a competitive kayak racer, canoe racer, runner, biker, and triathlete and know it will be better than before once it's healed:-)

  • @RunBikeHike That's awesome news dude. Congrats. I'm a climber and I've torn my Labrum and this sort of news makes me really trust my body to heal given I treeat it properly. All the best!

  • I have been disabled from my shoulder for 8 years now. I had one failed surgury. I changed doctors and he said I have a torn labrum and need surgury to fix it with screws in the bone. I am very scared he said they will also have to numb my whole should by injecting into my neck. I need to do it anyone have this surgury with the arm numb? How is it? How was it waking up ? Please help

  • @ADUBOIS11 i had that. i think numbing the arm is the way to go

  • surgery

  • got my surery for my labrum yesterday, 6 month heal time for me and i couldn't wrestle state this year and i was varsity

  • I have part of the rotation of my shoulder, i am wondering if i possible am pinching a nerve or i tore something... how do you figure this out is the only way a doctor visit ?

  • and im wondering if i should just hold off to get surgery till the end of my seinor year. i am a sophmore in high school right now.

  • @LTDDog14 your young i'm a sophmore in college now, I'm not sure what sport you play but you should get it taken care of if its just a clean up type surgery like mine its about a 3 month heal time....just get it taken care of the sooner the better

  • @calvs420 I need to get a cyst removed from the tear in mine and this is the procedure I have to take. How did your clean up go?

  • great, im a little freaked now. back in september, i tore my labrum in a football game. and five months later, im finally getting help for it. and i asked my trainer why the doctor said it was weird that i have a constant pain. the trainer said i probaply tore it bad enough that rehab alone cant help. so i think i need surgery. if anyone knows whey i have a constant pain, could you please let me know what it is and if i dont need surgery. im just trying calm myslef and fix this soon.

  • @LTDDog14 i did the same thing. "extensive tear of the superior and posterior portions of the labrum with a posterosuperior paralabral cyst." or thats what the paperwork said. the cyst is a fluid build up from the tear and its going to cause pain and discomfort. its swelling basically. the tear itself can get caught between the ball and socket part of your shoulder which causes that popping and catching sensation. if its bad enough, it will pop out entirely from what i understand. get it fixed..

  • I am also a professional wrestler and am thinking about holding off any needed surgery til the fall/winter for a 4-6 month rehab. Do you guys think its worth relaxing now for some time until i go back to do some lifting and wrestling or should i go get surgery as soon as possible,if thats the case...

  • I researched it and have been asking for suggestions and thoughts on it from previous patients. I cant throw a football or lift any weights. I do, however have full range of motion but cannot use any force or resistance in the shoulder. I think over use of heavy lifting and sports from past has lead me to this situation.

  • Hey, It's 3 months since you guys saw this but its my first. Im having all the symptoms of a torn labrum. Its been 3 weeks since doing it and feel that nothing is helping it heal.

  • I HAD A SURGERY ON JULY 22ND AND ON SEPTEMBER 28 WAS MY FIRST TIME LIFTING MY ARM ALL THE WAY STRAIGHT UP AND MY DOCTOR TOLD ME THAT WAS IMPRESSIVE BECAUSE IT USUALLY TAKES 3 MONTHS AFTER SURGERY TO BE ABLE TO LIFT YOUR ARM STRAIGHT UP BUT I HAVE WORKED MY ASS OFF 7 DAYS A WEEK HE TOLD ME ITS ALL ABOUT "NO PAIN NO GAIN" SO I WORKED EXTRA HARD I WANNA LIFT WEIGHTS SO BAD!!! AND THE RECOVERY IS COMING ALONG PRETTY GOOD.

  • @813birdman52 your drs an idiot, you shouldnt move your shoulder for 4-7 weeks ( depending on tear size ) so the anchors can set in and do their job correcly. Have fun with a fucked up shoulder

  • that is disgusting but awesome. probably hurt a lot

  • Getting labrum surgery in 2 days. Sucks I probably won't be healed in time for javelin, and definitely won't be playing football

  • Tore mine too.. probably.. mri tomorrow to tell for sure..

  • Skiing,

  • @Vbgirl2013 but its a 6 month recovery? i had my surgery about 2 months ago and cant even fully lift up my arm yet

  • i just had the surgery done 18 hours ago. i had a torn labrum for 3 years and the technical name was a Bankhart SLAP repair i believe. i have no idea how many sutures/anchors were put in. i'll find out at my follow-up next week. i had the nerve block but that wore off about 6-8 hours off surgery and it hurts pretty good so i've been popping a Perc 5 every 4 hours or so.

  • Sup wrestlers... haha. i've torn both of my labrums going into senior year with no surgery yet but its bound to happen.

  • ok everyone, the truth about this surgery is that it takes nerves of steel. had a large hill sachs lesion and torn labrum repaired on july 20th 2010. played 2 months of rugby with a torn labrum and honestly i did not notice 1 bit. then i fell off a mountain bike in california and dislocated it for the second time and the pain was un bearable because of the lesion which is very debilitating. Am 1 month post op and KEEP YOUR ARM IN THE SLING. If youre an athlete, getting healthy is #1 priority

  • I had it done at a local hospital in worcester mass called st. vincents hospital..there are a few surgeons there that do this surgery.

  • i dislocated my shoulders over a year ago. i just noticed that i wont be able to jack off for six months...god damn it.

  • @superbrock255

go lefty or get a girl friend...

Im practicing the first thing and working on the second thing before my surgery lol

  • I am about to get this surgery on April 1st 2010. I have a torn labrum in both shoulders. My right one is getting surgery, so i can play football and baseball next year. my left one will wait. IF IT SUCKS WRITE A COMMENT ON MY CHANNEL. let me know what recovery is like please.

  • I am actually recovering from this exact surgery right now, i had my labrum repaired on friday march 12th so its only been about four days but already the throbbing pain I had is gone! its nice to not feel that constantly.. now all i have to do is heal and recover! :)

  • @ILUVHORSES1981 where you had it done??

  • @ILUVHORSES1981 where you had it done??

  • hi i am in 8th grade i have this like they are doing pysical theripy first to help it do u think it will work i am kinda scared i kinda dont want surgry but do u think the pycical theripy will help please answer back fast

  • Im a sophomore and have the same thing. im getting the surgery in about a month. but i had a friend that had a tear also but it wasnt that bad. they did the therapy first and it worked out for them. im not too worried about the surgery though cause it will help. good luck

  • I tore my labrum in both shoulders. I tore the right one over a year ago and i just recently got surgery on jan. 20th. It really sucks at first because you cant move your arm and putting clothes on is a bitch but its been almost 4 weeks and i can move it around and lift my arm to 90 degrees. I tried therapy but it didnt work and i dont think its working on my left shoulder either. You will probably need a few mri's before they know if you need surgery

  • It´s a very good video for my Technical English classes.Thank you very much.

  • I have a part labral tear from serving in tennis. and having surgery in about a month. Any idea of how long until i will be able to play again as am hoping to be back by my next season.

  • i just had this surgery and the recovery is like 3-4 months till you can play sports

  • @noffelz

is that for contact sports(football) or just for like track or baseball

  • @ducksman1 yeah i play football skateboard swimming and track and i got the surgery because of football and its been about 5 months since i got it and i feel perfect im back in my sports and im still taking therapy for it just work out the shoulder alot.

  • @ducksman1 its for both contact and non contact. i wrestled and hurt it and im having it done.

  • I injured my shoulder about a year and a half ago and went in for an MRI last week and just found out this morning with a partially torn labrum, it's not SLAP which it kinda looks like here. Not looking forward to surgery, AT ALL. But got to get it done, dislocated it 5 times in the past year, 3 times in the past 3 months alone.

  • yesss! get the nerve block it feels like heaven

  • just had this yesterday the vicadin is great tho and i had the same prob in football i just plAyed with a sulley and i hear the rehab is gonna suck

  • had this surgery in january after having it torn for 7 months. my shoulder kept dislocating during my football games. came out of surgery with no pain thanks to the wonderful nurses. in a sling for 2-3 weeks. showering was by far the most painful part lol. the most annoying thing was the rehab. talk about tedious!! but thanks to Dr. Ruess and Cora Rehab centers of orlando, fl my shoulder feels like new! good luck to anyone who gets this surgery.

  • I've had this surgey. Its not too bad. you fall asleep and you awake with tremendous pain..

get the nerve block insted of anasteics

  • I have to have the surgery soon and I'm terrified

  • I had mine done 8 weeks ago, If they offer you the nerve block for surgery TAKE IT!!! you'll be pain free for 12-16 hours after the surgery. After that your pain meds will come in handy.

Hopefully you have someone to help you, the day to day activity will be very hard for you like showering, getting dressed, etc.

I was in a sling for 4 weeks then started PT, I go 2x a week... I still have some discomfort but things are getting better. Good Luck!

  • i have to get this done tomorrow,

ive had mine torn for 4 years

  • How did it work out for you?

  • it went pretty well, i ended up with 5 sutures needed. Its been around 4 weeks since the surgery and im no longer in a sling. i have about 70% of my motion back and im starting physio now. Feels so much better though. the pain when you wake up isnt even that bad, as well i had great nurses that were on top of pain medication

  • Glad to hear it went well. I'm sure after physio it will even be better.

  • the nurses i had were like goddesses.

  • ahh im only 15 yrs old im scared!

  • ugh i have a tornlabrum on my left shoulder its been like 8 months and i need surgery im getting it in 2 weeks can anybody tell how it feels when you wake up from it? does it hurt alot? can you move it when you wake up? do you feel it when they are performing it? im sorry its my first surgery ever. and im really scared! .

  • i just had this surgery a week ago. i understand how you feel but it is really not too bad. what hsppened to me was they thought i tore just my labrum but it ened up being more damage than that. i got to the hospidle for my surgery they put an IV in then about an hour later they put a nerve block in. thats where they shock the nerves going to ur shoulder so it cant send signals to ur brain it felt really wired i could move my fingers but i han no control over my arm then they put me to sleep

  • after they put me to sleep i woke up didnt remember anything barly remembered being put to sleep. with the nerve block on i couldnt feel any pain still and it worked for about 8 more hours untill it compleatly wore off then it hurt prety good but the doc gave me pain pills which helped alot so it really wasnt that bad now its been about 2 weeks just minior discomfort in my shoulder and i start rehab in 4 more weeks thats also when i get to take the sling off

  • thank you! yeah its just that its my first surgery ever. so i dnt know how it feels. but thank you. really appreciate it. tldcash.

  • np any time

  • I had it done 3 years ago, and you do not6 feel anything when you wake up. They put in a nerve blocker so your whole arm is like paralyzed when you wake up. The worst part is, the darn wedge that they make you wear. for a long time. But I hope all goes well with your surgery.. the most important thing to do is NOT TAKE YOUR ARM FROM THE SLING BEFORE THEY TELL YOU YOU CAN!!!!!!!! Or you will mess yours up just like I did mine and had to do it all over again!!!!!!!

  • thank you! very much i really appreciate it thanks! god bless.

  • i want to cry. i've been having a shoulder pop out in baseball swings for the last year. i thought it was just a fluke, then, a few times just while driving and resting myhand on top of the steering wheel. and then i took a nice hit in basketball to the left shoulder... once in golf, and then last week in flag football here at oklahoma state. it pops ALL the time, definitely feels 'loose' and i'm in pain. no sleeping on it for sure.

MRI on friday afternoon. please give me insight.

  • Yeah my shoulder felt the same after I crashed while riding my dirt bike. So after a MRI the Doc said I had a torn labrum. He said that the recovery time would be 6 weeks in a sling and then 12 weeks rehab. @$#%&#

  • I'm guessing your tear isn't as bad then I just got my MRI back and I have to get surgery with a 6 month recovery timeline

  • How did you tear your labrum?

  • ahh dang your rotator cuff huh?

  • Since we are telling war stories on our shoulders! I had a Shift and Tear in the Labrum July 06. I had the surgery January 3, 07. January 14th 09, i believe... I had another tear and had the glenoid space shaved due to the first surgery to stabilize the arm. Still having issues. Not fun! I do suggest that everyone stretches and plays fair! I'm 23% partially disabled and waiting to see how much more from the last surgery!

  • just had this surgery about a month ago.. feels great. i had torn it about 5 years ago. my range of motion is great if your from oklahoma i would definetley have any knee shoulder or elbow surgeries done by Dr. Brad Boone from EOOC

  • I had this surgery on July 8th. It was the first time I had any kind of surgical procedure so I was pretty nervous. It went really well - operation took about 1.5 hours and hardly any pain afterwards. Recovery is progressing very quickly but you have to do the exercises.

  • amazing, my advice is. don't get old,or practice sports that cause shoulderinjury.

  • don't get old.... lol

    good advice. hard to follow

  • I'm having an MRI tomorrow for a suspected labral tear.

I started having pain in the front part of my shoulder immediately after a heavy bench press lift, with a grip that ended up being too wide.

Has anyone come across a labral tear resulting from bench press?

    Thanks!

  • The first part of recovery is the easiest. I had this done back in March. The painful part is when you start strengthening it and doing more difficult stuff in PT. The good part is your arm will DEFINITELY feel better. I had a torn labrum for roughly two years that made doing just about anything painful and now that I'm starting to get back into lifting again I can feel an amazing difference.

  • had this done a week ago, was painful for the first week, this week though feels great haven't been resting it as much as i should though, had my arm outta the sling quite a bit, jus came from physio and was given some excersises to do, hope fully will be back excersising and playing sport in about 4 months

hope the procedure is succesful and the condition won't return, has anybody known of it returning (torn labrum)?

  • yeah i have torn mine twice, once posterior and now the anterior. I'm really bummed about it. Hopefully i'll have a terminator shoulder after this surgery.

  • no. only if you try to come back and play sports with contact to early such as football.

  • well im actually getting it today considering its 1 am

  • Im getting it tomm thanks that makes me feel alot better especially since my surgery is being done by the Mets official Doctor

  • To all:

I just had the arthroscopic surgery on 7/9/09...It has been one week and thus far I have had 0 pain...The surgeon already let me take the sling off and I am allowed to do "normal activity" and lift light objects...My range of motion is already 50%+

If you are considering this surgery, do it...it was a breeze...and when they say 4-6 month recovery, they mean 4-6 months til you can start throwing 50 lb dumbells around...I had it done on a thurs and went to work on monday...

  • thanks for the info...I'm gettin mine repaired in 3 weeks...hoping for a quick recovery. Your recovery story makes me feel alot better.

  • ohh shoot im getting this surgery in 2 days! my shoulder got dislocated alot cause of my torn labrum but i could do sports n everything fine.

it's just im a breakdancer and if i go on my right arm it pops out sometimes.

im' so scared i've never had surgery!

    haha

    anyone got tips?

  • The point is it still hurts a 6 out of 10 about 60% of the time. My pt says I'm doing good and getting better. I'm just scared that the weakness and pain in my bicep will never go away. Its like half the size of my other arm and looks weird. I'm just trying to do whatever I can to get it back to normal size and normal strength, or much closer than it is now at least.

  • i had this surgery 6 months ago after having my labrum torn for just over a year. The pain is still there and it feels as though any work out or weight lifting i do using my bicep muscle in some sort of wain is very extreme pain. It still feels terribly week. Not to mention they discovered bursitis in my shoulder as well. I started playing basketball with friends and lifting light weights of 15 pounds, I do push ups, and I am about to start swimming and will purchase a punching bag.

  • I am having this exact surgery tomorrow at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. This is my first "real" surgery, excluding tonsils and wisdom teeth. See, I am only 20 yrs old and I'm too young to die. I have a panic disorder and I've been awake all night thinking and dreading this. I even wrote a will and gave it to my mother. I forgot to ask my ortho how long this surgery will take, so does anybody have a general idea?

  • mate, calm down, I just had hip labum reparied yesterday and it was a calk walk. It took her 2 hrs to repair it. I didn't feel a thing as I was out cold. Seriously don't worry about. What surgeon are you going to? Your not going to die I promise you. THis was my first surgery as well, I'm 32 and very athletic. Just do what your doc says and stick to the p.t and you'll be fine Take the pain meds, and are they giving you an ice machine? Make sure they do. cheers mate

  • Thank you for your optimism. My brother and I aren't getting along at all right now, and his last words to me over the phone were "I hope you die during it (surgery)" I'm trying to look past that. My surgeon is Dr. Wolf, and yes they mentioned this electronic ice thing. I guess it's supposed to move the healing process along faster. Well, I better start getting ready. I have to be there at 5 am and its a two hour drive, just woke up. Thank you!

  • I feel for you (I'm reading this two weeks after you posted it). I'm having this very surgery tomorrow and am a bit scared (mostly about the general anesthesia, which did not go well last time for me). I'm wondering, though: how did it turn out?

  • About to get this done in a couple of days

  • I am 3 months post labral tear and bankhart repair. 4 scopes and 4 anchors. Still very sore. Word of advice (like others in this thread)... physio is critical!

  • if you have a minor tear and you can't do the sports like you used to just chalk it up to aging if your over 40. it's not worth the risk to you and your family if your job doesn't depend on it. Get a second and a third opinion. I had 2 docs that examined me that had slap 1 lesions, 1 had the surgery and the other didn't. Read ,read ,read, and study before you have this done unless it's reallyl bad.

  • Thanks for the video. I am a fireman and tore my labrum dragging a patient out of a small hall to the kitchen so we could do CPR. I've been out a month so far and they are scheduling surgery. It's nice to see some video so I can prepare for the day.

  • I tore my labrum playing volleyball and got surgery february 9th im pretty sure. They only put one anchor in so that i can play again. I still haven't started rehab, but i have almost full motion now. I have four really small scars. The first few days after are hell but it was definitely worth the surgery (:

  • my labrum was torn from 11-2 going counter-clockwise.. i was in surgery for about 3 hours and man, it hurt like crap when the medicine wore off, and i agree, rehab really helps, but even after a year, mine is nowhere near the way it was, i was benching 275-280 before, now i'm lucky to get 155

  • my dad tore his labrun and rotater cuff 18 months ago and he just had the surgery last week

  • So yea, i tore my left shoulder labrum real bad. After two years I went to the doctors to get the surgery. My smart ass went back to lifting weights after a month in the sling. My suggestion to anyone gettin this is dont do it. Even though you feel like a million bucks ur shoulders mos def not ready

  • Though for all the ppl about to do this surgery i strongly recommend you do not take it easy on your therapy or else you're screwed because that's what helped me recover so quickly

  • Usually the recovery from this surgery is about 18 months but I was already doing some light longtoss at about 180 ft. in november and by the end of december i was doing some light bullpens just mainly fastballs. At the end of fall baseball my coach let me know that he was going to redshirt me because he thought i was rushing my recovery so i didn't get to play the 08 season.

  • Ok so I had this procedure done in Jan. of 07 by Neal Elattrache from the kerlan-jobe clinic in los angeles. I was in a sling for about a month i then did rehab for about 4 months (that was quick from what i was told) the rehab was real tough but i busted my butt because i wanted to play the following season of baseball so i had to be ready by the following year.

  • im getting this surgery on my left shoulder in a week or so due to me dislocating my shoulder and tearing my labrum

    anything i should know?

can somone tell me recovery time, pain, etc?

im a wee bit nervous lol.

  • im about to have the same thing.

Obviously i know nothing about the pain yet, but from what i have heard recovery is at least 6 months, but probably not full strength for about a year

  • depends on how bad it is torn and how aggressive they will let you be at rehab.. its been a year and i say mine is around 75%.. but mine was almost completely torn all the way around.. 11-2 going counter-clockwise

  • i tore my labrum in my left hip, anyone know if i will need crutches and how long the recovery time is? thankss

  • ok so im gettin mine at about end of april will i be healed enough in june to swim and do common activities at the beach i know i wont be able to do sports and throw things will it be comfortable is wat im sayin???? i cracked the shoulder bone and tore the labrum so idk if anyone who has had this surgery can tell me. it would be appreciated

  • i fell and dislocated my shoulder and tore my labrum, streched my ligaments outs and when it popped back in it smeared the cartilage out so it was bone on bone. but i had the surgery like a year later, i was ina sling for a month, took about 5 months to get full range of motion. that was about 10 years ago, i am into serious body building, benching 300 plus, shoulder shrugs with 350, with no problems. pops every now and then

  • im set to get my surgery on my right shoulder because of a torn labrum, i tore it in the 2nd week of football, but played the rest of the season. it didnt get better or worse. my biggest problem is that i cant throw ANYTHING. exapmle, a football, baseball....whatever. can anyone relate?

  • ya, i hurt my shoulder playing football. I dove to tackle a guy (I played safety) and from what i remember, i either landed on the top of my shoulder, or on my arm, and i heard or felt like a stretch or a tear. it hasnt gotten any better. when i got an x-ray and catscan on it, the doctors said it was an inflammed rotator cuff, but im sure i did something to my labrum because it hasnt gotten any better. I cant do any physical sports anymore cause of it.

  • This is exactly what happened to me. Tore it during football lasdt year, played the whole season, and now its awful. I'm getting surgery this summer...just got the official MRI showing the tear today...

  • yeah, i cant throw, swim, etc.

im getting surgery on the 24th of june

  • @irishkidd7562 BRO I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE SAYING I HAD THE SAME THING I TORE MY LABRUM IN THE 4TH GAME OF MY FOOTBALL SEASON AND PLAYED UNTIL THE END AND WAS UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING THROW OR LIFT WEIGHTS AND IT SUCKED MAJOR ASS!!!

  • had surgery on my left yesterday, sling....lots of pain! Once the nerve block wore off.......whoa! pain! 5mg perks aint cutting it!

  • So I have a tear in the labrum of my right hip and it has been torn for roughly three years and I am more than likely facing surgery so my questions are what is the expected recovery time and how is the recovery of arthroscopic surgery as opposed to the regular surgery? I hope you guys all heal well and soon by the way!

  • Yeh thanks mate.

I'm not aloud to take my arm out of my sling for 3 weeks so i can't even shower which is obviously a bit of a pain. The pain itself has eased off alot though, getting better by the day. Hope your rehab goes well.

  • My shoulder has been popping for a few years now. I think I got this injury helping my aunt lift her refrigerator up the stairs. I finally got the surgery the day before Thanksgiving and I'm happy I got it. My arm is still in a sling and the rehab is going to take about two months but I know it was worth it. I don't ever want to have to go through that shoulder injury again.

  • I had labrum surgery yesterday on my right shoulder.

Currently in a sling and alot of pain.

  • I had my surgery 2 weeks ago and I'm going through the same thing. It will get better over time (I hear). Just remember to keep your arm in a sling and try not to move it too much.

  • After surgery that is.

  • I tore my labrum my senior football season. I drove my elbow into the ground and rolled my weight over my shoulder. My whole arm felt like it went to sleep. And my fingertips tingled every time I threw the ball. But yea I was just about back to normal in about 4 to 6 weeks.

  • I had torn my labrum in my right shoulder, by falling down a very small hill. I know it is very sad for me to do so much damage through such a small fall. But I was out of the sling, after surgery in 2 weeks, and almost back to my old self in 4 weeks. I just have to deal with popping of the shoulder. I don't have any other problems though

  • It's still popping?

  • Just in certain positions i can feel it pop.

  • I tore my posterior labrum.Sophomore year in high school I first injured my shoulder. Trainers said it was a shoulder stinger or pinched nerve in the shoulder. I kept playing. Finally senior year i got it checked out, turns out i tore my posterior labrum. Got it fixed in march after hockey season. Now it is October, after rehab and starting to work out again it is always getting tweaked again and is very hard to work out consistently to get back to normal. It sucks. Cool Video. Good Luck.

  • Did your shoulder heal back to normal and were there any scars?

  • It's about 95% now, the scars are so small they look like a minor scratch about the size of a thumbnail. Well worth the surgery!

  • Mr.Kennedy has suffered a torn labrum and may require surgery depending on the strictness and ammount of effort put into his rehabilitation for the next 2 weeks, may he require surgery he will be out from 4-6 months, if he does not require surgery he will be out from 4 - 6 weeks

  • He just got drafted to the Pros, and he just wants to get better and be able to throw as soon as he can. We know it takes at least 8-9 months to be ready again, So if he get this surgery soon he might be able to be ready for Spring Training.

Sorry for the long "story" and for my english =) but Any advice?

  • Part 1: Get the surgery! I doubt my input will have much impact on your decision, but I was in a similar situation. I am a right handed pitcher at my high school, and I dislocated my shoulder 4 times, detaching/tearing my labrum in my left arm (catching arm). I had the procedure a month ago, and I just got out of the sling. Odds are your boyfriend will have it on longer. And I can't play until March. But the point is, if your boyfriend doesn't get the surgery, then he will destroy his arm.

  • Hello... I don't know a lot about this, but my boyfriend is a left handed pitcher, and yesterday he learned through an MRI that he has a tear in the labrum from 11 o'clock to 2 o'clock. The doctor talked to him about this surgery, but at the same time he's kinda suggesting not to get the surgery but to try cortizone shots to strenghtened his arm and see what happens. Do you think this cortizone shots are just a waste of time if the MRI showed he has a tear? Or do you think it might help him?

  • Part 2: And he will never throw a ball again, and there goes his baseball future. 3 people on my team (including me) have had the same procedure, and have had insane results (sometimes in rare cases, the tendons become tighter after the surgery, often increasing the velocity of your throw!). So PLEASE! I am almost begging you for the sake of your boyfriend and his future....have the surgery. The coaches will keep him, because I'm sure he's getting anxious about that too, I was!

  • Big Boy, get to a doctor. My shoulder held up a bit for the first few throws, then pain started.

  • I went to my regular doc and was referred again to the rehab doc. This guy is telling me to go to PT again and I really don't feel like doing another 2 months of rehab again with the same pain coming back. Right now, I'm searching for a sports medicine/orthopedic specialist to take a look at it. I know your probably not a doctor, but from my descriptions, do you think I might have a partially or torn labrum. I'm thinking I could, but I just don't have the "clicking" sounds when I move my shoulder

  • I had 4 anchors put in to stabilize my shoulder. Now, five months later, I am just starting to throw, and I feel great! My shoulder is no longer super-loose, and there is no grinding or cracking, or pain! Just wanted to let anyone who has any doubts or heard the horror about not being able to come back from this thing to just do your rehab, work hard, and you'll be back playin ball. Sure, its not a blast, but my shoulder now feels even better than before!

  • I am a high school pitcher and I had labrum surgery in December. Over the summer, i had severe pain in my shoulder. After, going to the doctor, I did not get a clear diagnosis (He thought it was something with the growth plate?) I did rehab, rehab, and more rehab, and come fall I tried to throw and i felt a sharp pain deep in the socket of my shoulder, along with some clicking and grinding (which sucked) On december 1 i got an MRI and it showed a bankart tear in the labrum from 3 oclock to 6oclo

  • i had an anterior and posterior tear and it was the most painfull thing ever the worst was after the surgury trying to recover it hurt like a bitch

  • How does a torn labrum feel like? Is it like excruciating pain where you can't even lift your shoulder? I'm asking because I hurt my shoulder pitching and I went to physical therapy and it sort of helped. I came back this season with my shoulder feeling good for the the first couple of days, but then that same pain in the shoulder came back. I feel fine with no pain except when I'm throwing.

  • I'm lefty outfielder and I had surgery 5 months ago. But before I had surgery (SLAP repair) I felt very loose.. my entire left arm felt like it was hanging lower than it should have been. There were also a lot "kinks" in my shoulder.. I could hear pop if I did a shoulder press. and I also did physical therapy over the summer for a while but I didn't follow as strictly as I should have. Once fall started everything was going smooth and the arm felt stronger until one practice with too many throws

  • Thanks for the reply. From reading your comment, I most likely don't have a torn labrum. My shoulder feels absolutely fine when I'm doing regular activities, it only really hurts when I'm throwing. It's definitely something with the ligaments, tendons, etc because I know what soreness feels like and its definitely not soreness. I don't really feel any pops or anything, but I feel like a deep pain in the front of the shoulder(front shoulder bicep area) whenever I throw.

  • bigboy i have the same pain as you where it doesnt hurt unless i throw. i saw the angels team doctor and he said i had a partially torn labrum. he said 90% of players in the MLB have a partially torn labrum. im doing physical therapy right now and i am going to see how to works.

  • I went to PT about for two months right before my season started. For the first two days of practice, my shoulder felt pretty strong and looked like PT worked. About the third day, I really started throwing and the same pain came back. I can still play with the pain, but I'm normally a pitcher and right now I just can't throw with any velocity at all. Now I'm pretty much just playing first base and not pitching at all. I;m in season righ tnow so I'll go see a doctor AGAIN once the season is over

  • are u dealing with yocum at kerlan and jobe?

  • I walked around with a torn labrum for a year before I got it fixed. Some days it was throbbing, but I actually continued trying to lift weights with it torn. If you absolutely cannot sleep on that shoulder at night, you probably have a torn labrum, it's a classic sign. Your arm will also feel "loose", slightly dislocate a lot, make very strange popping sounds, get "hung up" when doing rotation, etc. I'm at 95% now.

  • gettin mine tomorrow just got it checked from 4 years ago didnt think anything other than it was loose

  • I'm getting this at the end of July.

Will I come back 100% and still be able to lift weights and most athletic activities?

  • According to my orthropod recovery goal should be 100% for strength and mobility, but at 8 months post surgery I still have some range of motion issues and the strenght is not quite there yet either, but each day is better.

  • i had the same thing so i went to a sports physician he told me to get an MRI and it shpwed that i had a Superior Labral Tear(SLAP).. had surgery a week ago and im going to therapy 3 times a week. recovery should take about 4-6 months

  • Can you explain to me what types of symptoms you had? Did it only hurt when you threw a ball because that's pretty much the only time it really bothers me.

  • hay i have this problem too, I think that it is cool that i can see what is going to happen to me... I love YouTube... I am happy Google bought it, because i love Google too

  • whoa the doc showed me pictures but how did you get the video? i never thought to ask lol. i got mine from lifting as well although i still fell pain from time to time. when you started lifting again how did you start? i wanna start again but am afraid of aggravating it. any pointers?

  • He gives a copy to all his patients. Normally there is narration too, but his mic wasn't working that day I guess. I actually started lifting a bit too aggressively. I worked up to the old weights I was pushing too quickly and got pretty sore, so I took another month off and then worked up slower and seem to be doing great now. I avoided things like bench-to-neck which really puts the shoulders at a very bad angle. But military, db press, etc are all way better than ever before.

  • The pain was in the back, so I am assuming it was posterior (but to be honest I never asked). I did have problems with the shoulder partially dislocating, that has definitely been fixed now.

  • I am getting this surgery on Wedensday! Tore mine pitching... How was the recovery?

  • Recovery was quick, less than a month and I was back lifting. I think I got some scar tissue where the camera was in, but the part where they did the surgery is great.

  • Do you know if this was a anterior labrum tear? Did you have problems with your shoulder dislocating before the surgery?
