You see, when the Spanish colonizers encroached upon the "New World" they established a casta system that was largely based on race and/or skin color. Peninsulares were at the top followed by criollos, indigenas (indigenous), then blacks (Negroes). The mixed people, who were the products of sexual encounters (usually rape) between white men and non-white women were placed somewhere in these categories depending on how they looked in terms of phenotype and skin color.

The darker and more African you looked the dimmer your prospects. Unfortunately, the residuals of this particular ideology has persisted and reinforced itself until present day. It has to be about skin color because it is largely about skin color. I'm not trying to hate on this woman because she is beautiful. However, when you look at most people from Jamaica 8/10 are dark skinned. You have a spanish surname so I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Skin color is a major determinant all throughout the world but especially in Latin America and the Caribbean. Most people in Mexico are indigenous-looking but there TV shows depict nothing but white (or mestizo) people.
