wow, target used the song in an exact opposite way it was written to be used. They took it and made it convoluted and sick, thats why it wold. nice job target!
Phenomenal clip and indeed one of the best commercials of all time, thanks for posting it. I remember thinking I should buy Target stock when I saw this series of commercials coming out. Regarding the "enlightened" posts and whether Devo thinks the song is counter to commercialism, I am sure they would argue; you as an individual should have "Freedom of Choice".
What was Target thinking...Do they have any idea what this song is about? Using this song over a Target commercial is almost like telling people NOT to shop at Target...
I heard in an interview with Mark Mothersbaugh that when he would choose songs for commercials (he worked for many years doing music for various television commercials and television shows), he often put in subliminal messages detouring people from the company. Duty Now
Not really, if you think about it ... they changed the song to make it more "positive" ...after all, DEVO itself did "DEVO 2.O" and changed their OWN lyrics to make this song positive for kids to listen to ... like it or not, they do these kinds of things! ;)
I suppose you have grounds to what you are saying, desertlonghair. Most people have not heard the original song and have little idea of what the song is criticizing. As far as fans of Devo, or anyone else familiar with the song, however, this song could be detrimental towards Target's goal of alluring potential customers.
As far as Dev2.0 goes, the lyrical changes are subtle, mostly removing sexual content or pessimism. One of the reasons Devo agreed to do 2.0 is to introduce Devolution to kids.
I know that Mark does it for the money, but he, admittedly, chooses the songs for most of the commercials for which he creates the soundtracks that, if you are paying attention, are either making fun of, or recommending not buying from the given company. He is able to make money from the system, while at the same time, making fun of it. Its great!
I highly doubt that there is any backmasking in this video, as that particular song was recorded more than two decades before the debut of the commercial. If one digs up the entire song, however, and listens to the whole thing, it becomes very apparent what Mothersbaugh was saying about Target. (Hell, if one pays attention to the lyrics IN the commercial, one might be able to figure it out)
Did this commercial lead to the blue energy domes, or is it just coincidence!?...

Do you have the red one as well? That used the first line of "Beautiful World".

The irony is priceless... Makes me proud to be from the American Midwest. The only thing that could make this any better is Alan's drumming ;-)

I think Mothersbaugh is in it for the money, but somehow, that dosen't make me feel any worse toward him. Could it be the power of "Bob"...?

There could even be a bit of backmasking in these things as well.
