I think one real problem is that the term hack has expanded to include too many topics. While i think if someone is hack, they already know it so why bother bringing it up. I use to really resent a comic doing things I have seen other comics do but a great deal of my resentment stemmed from my lack of experience in comedy. As my knowledge has grown I have realized my opinion on it doesn't matter and hacks kill, so they will always work.

Well said. Recently, several comic friends and I got together and the topic of "hack" came up. We all agreed that labeling any topic as hack - without looking at the quality of joke about that topic - has ironically become very hack. Funny is funny. According to the ancient writings of the Greek philosopher Sheckistotle there are really only seven jokes anyway. So...
