BBF, I've often thought the same thing. What collaborations would he have fostered?!? I do think he'd be proud of ABB's more recent songs Instrumental Illness, Kind of Bird, and Egypt, among others.
That's because the spirit of the tune didn't call for Duane's soaring slide licks. Above all else, Duane always played with the vive of the tune. If you don't think that is Duane, then you're not really listening. No doubt that is Duane.
dammmm.... This is soooo beautiful to hear ... i've been a jazz fan since a kid and an ABB fan almost simultaneously as i picked up the guitar and horn . Thankyou for this audio !!! Love it !!!
I know Duane, Dickey and Jaimoe are there. Red Dog too maybe? Then there's someone (sounds like a younger dude) who can apparently roll 'em like you read about. There's also a woman's voice. .Anyone have any thoughts on who's there during these sessions? I think I read these were recorded by Gerry ,.
That is not Chuck playing piano. That is Gregg. Sad thing about this rehearsal is this is where Duane took possession of the bike he was riding when he died. I remember how blown away he was when it showed up. this is also where we first worked on Blue Sky.
@ButchTrucks Couple of ladies on the web are friends of Mike Callahan and claim that is Mike laughing after the chant on Black Hearted Woman(1st album). Was Mike standing near a mic & got on accidentally? Saw Dickey at small club. During the break you could walk right up to him. Dickey said that is not Mike but Oakely. Then I figured they meant Pony Boy (at the end) but Dickey said "No that's Butch Trucks. I don't know of Mike laughing on any of our records". You agree with Dickey?
@ButchTrucks Also remember buying my copy of Eat A Peach the day it came out. You all had just played in Winston-Salem and Gregg told us to look for it on the WB label. But it was on Capricorn. Well I was surprised with Blue Sky. It was a departure for the band but no question it is an Allman Brothers song. Noticed it just recently rated no. 38 on Gibson's all time rock gutiar solos with Duane and Dickey listed. But you and Oakely are tremendous on the song too. I don't hear Jaimoe much on it.
@ButchTrucks Chilling, BT...thanks so much for sharing that. I used to live on Hillcrest In Macon, 1987 last year I was in school there...about four/five blocks up the hill from where it happened. Used to see Jaimoe at the Rookery every week or so and sometimes he played at our house (KA) with that little jazz combo. We were in awe, but tried to stay out of his face.
@ButchTrucks So enlighten me...Been fan since...waaaaayy back, and I am not yet familiar with "Gatlinburg" tapes(??) What year are these from? This track is so cool...reminds me of some of those old analog tapes I still have!
@ButchTrucks Dear Butch, I saw you guys at the Detroit Rock and Roll Revival on 5/31/71 at the Michigan State Fairgrounds. You went on after J.Giels and before Edgar Winter's White Trash and Johnny Winter And. What a great concert, but I seem to remember you guys having trouble with the stage speakers! Was it Duane who was kicking them or Dickey Betts?
Yes Reese filled in for Gregg when he was sick on a couple of show back then. Duane brought in Gregg and replaced Reese because Duane, Dickey and Berry thought Gregg should do most of the singing. Before Gregg, it was Duane and Berry doing most of it. Dickey and Berry sang in Second Coming and I think 1971 on Blue Sky was the first Dickey singing with the ABB
Duane used about two LP as his stage guitar and played Dickey's SG on slide. After Goldie, Dickey went with a PRS, then a red Gibson 335 and his final years with the ABB he had his old 56 Fender Strat and a yellow Fender Strat. Used the old 56 Fender hardtail the most. Dan Toler played this Fender in Great Southern in the 1970's but it was Dickey's guitar as I understand it. In 2001 he went back to LPs but still uses the yellow Fender Strat on No One the Run With. Recently the 56 Strat on slide.
I've been listening to the ABB almost daily since that started. And I don't hear Duane either. I can clearly hear Dickey's style and licks. Maybe this is very late 1971 after Duane died. You know that played as a five man band for almost a year. When they started Duane played a Fender, Dickey a big Gibson (335-345?) Duane switched to a LP and Dickey to a Fender Strat and after about a year Dickey went to a SG then gave it to Duane and he too went LP. Went though about three LPs before Goldie.
@boblackey1 Bob, think about it. We don't hear Duane's soaring slide licks on this, so I'm not positive if he's present during this rehearsal. But Butch alluded to Duane taking possession of the Sportster at this time. Maybe he was out taking a test ride.
This is worth burning for sure, I think Dicky is playing an SG (maybe all he had at the time?). I know Duane played a lot of slide on an SG, raised bridge and finger picked. He really made a better guitarist out of Dickey when he was alive, you can hear him slip afterwards..
People were talking about these tapes and this version of My Favorite Things long before Chuck joined the band. I remember reading about it around the time they put Duane's Anthology album together in '72.The piano is definitely Gregg. It sounds a bit like Chuck's style because Duane and the brothers were exploring jazz at the time. Duane went on and worked with Herbie Mann.
@maconlaw The cowboy album 5'll Getcha Ten had Chuck on it. It was in 1971. One of the tracks on the album, Please Be With Me, has Duane Allman. So it is definitely possible that Duane and Chuck played together.
duane was listening more and more to the jazz of miles davis and john coltrane before his death. makes me wonder where he would have gone with jazz if he'd lived on...
I read that Duane was working this one up before his death, and here it is! Thanks for this historic post, hopefully these tracks are available (?), or more will be posted here! Thanks again and peace!
yea there is another version, I also have but its 12 minutes I don't know what to cut out and don't really want to make two vid's for it..Wail on skydog
