I thought it was nice that he was learning new words. He doesn't give up on life even though his future is grim. That's really impressive, that shows some real character. I don't really think he did what they say he did. Not only is he trying to get educated he doesn't confirm to that stupid politics. So I think he's innocent.
At the very beginning, it's funny how the guy is almost shocked when Louis said he doesn't assault people who disrespect him. It's like it was just a simple fact of life. He didn't know that most people in life don't respond that way to others.
@Honigdrohne0221 It is quite funny how many of them don't even know many common words a lot of the population knows. A lot of their mind set is just ignorance and lack of any other examples to live by.
@greylego He said "I ain't gonna sit in that cell and let a motherfucker break my motherfuckin jaw, knock my teeth out, fuck me hard up. Just because I say "Oh, I'm gangsta". Thats what he said :)
Killing three people is obviously a reprehensible and deplorable action, but I felt a sense of sympathy for Robert Shaw when Louis was interviewing him. If he's guilty, he no doubt deserves punishment, but he appears so cognisant and intent on bettering himself that it saddens me on a human level to think how better he could have turned out if he had been born and raised in a different environment. It's a shame that there's no way to regulate who has children.
of all the jail documentarys on youtube, these ones are by far the best, I'm 17 and i spent a week in a juvenile detention center for agrivated buglary and got released on bail. shows me that crime just isnt worth it, I'd rather be anwhere in the world then locked up with these pychos.
I feel so sorry for Robert Shaw. I don't think he is safe for society, but when he described his dad, I just felt like he had no other option than to turn out the way he is now. At least now he has the privilege of a place to reflect and learn about his past.
@Sh1t0nTheVilla that may be true but as soon as they get released they go back to all there friends who are doing the same crimes and 9/10 they slip back
That's really all it is - to a regular person, respect is what you gain when you act in a way that others will see as admirable. To these guys, respect basically means - using extreme violence against anyone who does anything that irritates you. It's pathetic. I mean these guys are products of rough environments, bad upbringings, but they are braindead basically, impossible to live as a person who isn't a threat to others.
We like Robert Shaw cause we see a videoclip of 5minutes where he gives good answers and shows that he wants more in life
But do you have any idea if he ever raped a little girl or stabbed someones young son
Yeah Robert Shaw looks like a young intelligent man but don't say he needs a facebook page or shit like that, thats just bullsh1t, he killed three people and deserves time for that (although not the USA approach).
Robert shaw is still awaiting trial but is no longer facing death penalty.
There was no excuse for his actions, but I'm glad he wasn't sentenced to death. An eye for an eye is wrong. Besides the victims were gang members. As for the bootcamps, there should be lots more worldwide instead of filling prisons. Plus they should make bootcamp lasting more than 6 months. Anyone agree?
Robert Shaw deserves a second chance, you can see he's turned the tide and he's only endured this current stint for about 3-4 years. The problem with these prisons is that they send them back out on the streets to their old hoods and they get back into the gang life by the influence of the members. The US needs to fix this and make sure these guys never re-enter that lifestyle and ultimately, stop this death penalty nonsense.
Oh and I understand the irony of this message from my username, swag.
Louis's effeminate personality and nonsensical questioning got annoying real quick...
" So a crazed man whipped out his penis on you, spit in your face and cursed you out in front of everyone...why didn't you just shake his hand, go to the top bunk and read a novel? "
Like come on man...If these questions really represent his mindframe, he's skewed as far to the right as these individuals are to the left.
@Kashmereair You're right that his style is annoying but it's also kind of funny to see this nerdy white boy speaking to these hard thugs. He's obviously out of touch with their reality but to call him right wing ain't right. There's no way he's right.
@Kashmereair The only reason his perspective seems off is because the prison system is so fucked that the only recourse these inmates have is violence. They are trapped together with a bunch of other crazy retards and there aren't enough guards to keep the peace within the cells. Acting like the proper response to someone pulling out his penis and spitting is to beat the shit out of him is in a nutshell what is so wrong with US prison systems. It's not suppose to be thunderdome.
The boot camp looks to be a positive thing. America needs to fix the root of the problem not reactionary policing after the crime has been done. You can't kill a weed without removing the roots. The problem in part is lack of family structure, poverty, lack of education, lack of a LOT of basic things many Americans take for granted. Young kids need fathers and someone to look up to, not to watch their brothers and fathers be killed off and locked the fuck up.
You get two sheets. Every Saturday you put the clean sheet on the top, the top sheet on the bottom and the bottom sheet you turn in to the Laundry Boy. Any man who turns in the wrong sheet spends a night in the box. No one will sit on the bunks with dirty pants on. Any man sitting on a bunk with dirty pants will spend a night in the box. Any man who don't bring back his empty pop bottles spends a night in the box. Any man loudtalking spends a night in the box.

It's really crazy reading some of the comments here in response to the people who are being understanding or slightly sympathetic towards some of the inmates shown on Louis' show. You'd think that people would have more sense than to spout hatred on here, especially where someone like hunkydunky1 who acknowleged that he/she might get hate, actually did end up being hated on.
Each case is different, and we know nothing about individual cases, so why come on here and create more hatred...
@aneaneanehei wow he touched you? yeah the poor guy, killed 3 ppl. and now he touches you because starts whining about his whole life ahead of him which they will take and how poor he is...
don't you think he should have thought about that before he ended the lifes of 3 other people?? how the hell can you have sympathy for someone like this? i am against capital punishment but i find it fucking disgusting how ppl. let pitty guys like him just because of some nice words.
he didn't have to kill those people and he still did it and now he thinks he is such a poor guy and this isn't right. tell this to the ppl. he killed, do you think he ever thinks about them? i don't think so. you always have a choice, you ALWAYS do!! No mater what, you always have a choice! yes he probably had a bat childhood but he still didn't have to kill those ppl.! it's not like we are talking about robbery here!
You can't not feel sorry for the man. He may have committed horrific crimes but he's still a genuine human. Unlike some of the other inmates he speaks truthfully with Louis and comes across as a pretty interesting character.
I'm by no means advocating his release/second chance for the dreadful shit he did but his testament was quite touching.
@Staatsmacht12 Multiple previous convictions, may have used excessive/deadly force, illegal weapons.. the charges and time adds up. He didn't rob one person one time to get 20 years.
@Staatsmacht12 i dont think the german way will work. penalties in germany are way too soft. for example, where do all this foreign kids come from with 10 - 20 crimes (without going to prison!). We are talking about assaults and robbery! They were not punished, because german judges thought, we should educate them. The consequence was, that a lot of foreigner kids thought, i can do what i want and nothing will happen to me. believe me, in the future germany will adopt the us system.
@Staatsmacht12 It doesn't work at all. Higher life standards and a bigger middle class are the only reasons for why there is less crime in Germany. If there would be higher penalties, there would be even fewer crime. (Und wenn wir uns mal trauen würden, den ein oder anderen Drogendealer zurück in sein Heimatland zu verfrachten...)
As a Drill Instructor in the Bootcamp program I have read your comments and realized that most of you DON'T understand the method behind the madness. Maybe you had to have been in the military at some point to appreciate the what this program has to offer. We (ALL THE STAFF AT BOOTCAMP) work very hard to give these kids a chance. To show them that there is another way. Through self discilpline, hard work, respect of and for others. Thank you Mr Theroux! I applaude you and your staff. God Bless.
Robert Shaw seems like the only prisoner interviewed that was mentally able to carry himself like a real human being rather than a complete mentalist animal, and when Louis asked him questions he actually addresses the questions and elaborates on them, which none of the others seemed to have the capacity to do. If he really did the triple murder then its a big waste for him.
@hunkydunky1 I totally get what you mean. I would love to read some of his stuff to see what he wrote... any ideas how to help make that happen anyone?
The kid in solitary's right: Everyone - nearly - in the jail is black, everyone - nearly - in boot camp is black. Where are the white people? Is America actually arguing that white people are somehow not prone to criminality? The racism is spread thick in Miami.
Yes I know I'll probably get hate for this, but the guy Robert Shaw (alleged triple murderer) at 7:50, speaks so much sense, and in a way I actually respect the dude. Like, he tries hard to learn words and writes novels, and if you theoretically took him out of a prison, he would seem like a nice guy.
@hunkydunky1 yeah I actually feel really sorry for the guy :-( I'm not sure what exactly what is right or wrong in that case. But really... he's 32 and makes me really sorry
@hunkydunky1 There is no hate to get for saying that. While there is no excuse for murder, it is clear to see that this Robert Shaw is a victim of environment. Victim of heritage, if you will.
It's easy to forget, when you are (as I am) from a completely different culture, that laws of the jungle still exist in parts of the world. The green jungles have just turned into urban ones.
Of course you should aim higher and to get rid of the gang environment, but I suppose that is not easy.
@hunkydunky1 please..hes writing novels because hes bored,do you actually think he,d be do that on the outside? no..running drugs,, killing,, mugging ,what else animals get up to.seems like a nice guy....you idiot..on the outside he would be mugging raping your stupid ass.
the big black dude thats in boot camp is obviously not going to change his attitued towards robbing people n shit when he gets out, he's clearly just doing what they say to get early release..
Irony of this is that black people spent over 500 years to free themselves from the shackles or slavery, and yet this moron takes pride in being handcuffed. mlk must be regretting his sacrifice.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The only other time I've seen this many despicable niggers in one show is when the National Geographic channel did those fly-over shots of the refugee camps in Somalia.
In fairness, if some guy came over to me and started 'disrespecting' me, in front of my friends or people I needed to impress for whatever reason... I'd make him stop too. The difference is, in there environment, kicking 7 colours of shit out of somebody is the socially acceptable form of doing so.
That guy facing the death penalty needs to be put on the circuit teaching the other inmates. "I don't want them breakin my fucking jaw, fuckin'g me up just so i can say "oh I'm gangsta!"" is EXACTLY the attitude they need to have. When I heard that this massive grin just appeared on my face, cos it's just so good to know they're not all retards like that guy who beat up the psych inmate.
@chicainger I don't know which interview you watched, but here he didn't express one bit of remorse or desire to do better. He only feels sorry for himself. He had no problem bringing death to others but he can't stand the thought of it coming for him. Evil actions bear evil consequences, and the weight he feels now is a karmic burden. He could be granted a full pardon, released from prison and still he won't be free.
@spineofsnake I don't know which reply you read but in mine i didn't say he expressed remorse for what he did. I'm saying he seems to know what's gone wrong in his life, and what he wants to do better in his life for himself in that he's trying to learn more and tell his story and such. I think he's had something happen that could make him a better person if he chooses to, but whenever that insight comes it will already be too late. I do not think he's rehabilitated and fit to leave prison.
@chicainger Thanks for clarifying, but I didn't hear him mention doing better. I'm sure reading the dictionary stops him from going insane in solitary, but it doesn't absolve him of sh*t. I'm no fan of the death penalty, but he made choices and reached their logical conclusion and NOW he feels bad? Huh. I hope when he walks down that hall he finally feels empathy for the lives he snuffed out. It's his only shot at personal betterment, and it's nowhere to be found in this interview.
@chicainger True but when you look at his case and what he probably did then I don't feel for him anymore. I feel for the families that lost their loved ones. I mean dude is facing the death penalty for a tripple murder. It doesn't get any more fucked up....so if he's guilty then he should definitely be executed. Fuck him.
Jesus, that bit with Robert Shaw was so beautiful. I'd read his novels.

aneaneanehei 8 months ago 25
@aneaneanehei wow he touched you? yeah the poor guy, killed 3 ppl. and now he touches you because starts whining about his whole life ahead of him which they will take and how poor he is...
don't you think he should have thought about that before he ended the lifes of 3 other people?? how the hell can you have sympathy for someone like this? i am against capital punishment but i find it fucking disgusting how ppl. let pitty guys like him just because of some nice words.
h0ktar 4 months ago
@h0ktar Wasn't his reasoning that the 3 people who were murdered executed a 15 month old baby?
TheEtaoin 4 months ago
@aneaneanehei
part2:
he didn't have to kill those people and he still did it and now he thinks he is such a poor guy and this isn't right. tell this to the ppl. he killed, do you think he ever thinks about them? i don't think so. you always have a choice, you ALWAYS do!! No mater what, you always have a choice! yes he probably had a bat childhood but he still didn't have to kill those ppl.! it's not like we are talking about robbery here!
h0ktar 4 months ago
@h0ktar
You can't not feel sorry for the man. He may have committed horrific crimes but he's still a genuine human. Unlike some of the other inmates he speaks truthfully with Louis and comes across as a pretty interesting character.
I'm by no means advocating his release/second chance for the dreadful shit he did but his testament was quite touching.

america is fucking crazy...
in germany we dont have dead penaltys and for a robbery u usually get 2-5 years not 20...
it works though! high penaltys are not always the best alternative i guess.
Staatsmacht12 8 months ago 26
@Staatsmacht12 Multiple previous convictions, may have used excessive/deadly force, illegal weapons.. the charges and time adds up. He didn't rob one person one time to get 20 years.
welcomehome901 8 months ago
@welcomehome901
ok but uve to admit there is something wrong if u look at the statistics us is #1 in the amount of prisoners of all developed countries.
whats the cause then if it isnt the system?
Staatsmacht12 8 months ago
@Staatsmacht12 i dont think the german way will work. penalties in germany are way too soft. for example, where do all this foreign kids come from with 10 - 20 crimes (without going to prison!). We are talking about assaults and robbery! They were not punished, because german judges thought, we should educate them. The consequence was, that a lot of foreigner kids thought, i can do what i want and nothing will happen to me. believe me, in the future germany will adopt the us system.
dasheiligeheerlager 5 months ago
@Staatsmacht12 stfu u hav no idea what your talking about
JansenSk 4 months ago

The kid in solitary's right: Everyone - nearly - in the jail is black, everyone - nearly - in boot camp is black. Where are the white people? Is America actually arguing that white people are somehow not prone to criminality? The racism is spread thick in Miami.
5147848amp 9 months ago
@5147848amp 0:26 there they are...
SunStridar 9 months ago
@5147848amp A. Black people commit the vast majority of violent crimes. B. Miami is not a WASP community. It is Hispanic and Black Islander.
Ask the kid in boot camp why he cant do the shit, get out, and lead a productive life, instead of being insubordinate and going to jail.
Don't give empathy where it isn't due.

When I heard that this massive grin just appeared on my face, cos it's just so good to know they're not all retards like that guy who beat up the psych inmate.

weavehole 9 months ago
@chicainger I don't know which interview you watched, but here he didn't express one bit of remorse or desire to do better. He only feels sorry for himself. He had no problem bringing death to others but he can't stand the thought of it coming for him. Evil actions bear evil consequences, and the weight he feels now is a karmic burden. He could be granted a full pardon, released from prison and still he won't be free.
spineofsnake 9 months ago

It's his only shot at personal betterment, and it's nowhere to be found in this interview.
spineofsnake 9 months ago

@chicainger True but when you look at his case and what he probably did then I don't feel for him anymore. I feel for the families that lost their loved ones.
