For such a violent, nasty film (which is a great thing) it was strangely emotinal. This opening track really set the tone and raised the hairs on the back of your neck x
I'm no Australian, but if I was, I would accept my history as an Australian from start to finish as you are, then look to a final result as you've done. Countries today try to hide their past, but we can only move on into the future if we learn from our mistakes. How can Japan atone for its crimes by changing the history in their children's textbooks? How can Australia move on and make itself a land in which aborigines and colonial-descendents can live together without accepting the black war?
I used to feel embarassed about our apparant lack of culture. I've come to realise that it's only worth being embarassed about what "Australianism" has become. Our bleak landscapes and our aesthetic is not a pretty thing, nor is our past. But there is great beauty here, Our culture was one of a people set against all odds to fight and struggle for survival. We forget about our past because it's easy. We carved this land out of sandstone and destroyed everything that stood in our way.
It's good that you've come to this realisation though. Feeling embarassed about an apparant lack of culture is the last thing you should be doing. Good luck sir, this world is a terrible and beautiful place.
@wardagh16 Incredibly hard. Building railways for the Empire in the scorching sun all day, little sleep and many of them were sent there for stealing a loaf of bread for their impoverished family.
In reality, most where sent there for being repeat offenders, murderers and rapists. The innocent prisoner story is a myth, but Australia is no less of a place because of it.
where can i get this song?

The strange thing is this song sung by a little girl would not generally be good music, but in the context of the opening of this film it is perfect.

There is a happy land far far away
Where saints in glory stand bright bright as day
Oh how they sweetly sing worthy is our Savior King
Loud let His praises ring praise praise for aye
Come to that happy land come come away
Why will ye doubting stand why still delay
Oh we shall happy be when from sin and sorrow free
Lord we shall live with Thee blest blest for aye

How hard was it when they sent people to Ausstralia for punishment? This is one of my favourite films and by the way Nick Cave is a genius.
