So I'm a total noob at all this but what will these upgrades do for it? I want to know because I'm thinking about buying one before they change the body styles with the new versions if they end up changing them only because I've heard that they might keep it like the MacBook air
hi i have mid 2009 macbook pro 13in 2.53 ghz core 2 duo i want to upgrade the ram to 8gb and hard drive to ssd 250gb plz tell me which is the fastest and best ram and ssd for my macbook pro...2 of my motherboard screws and one super drive screw are striped what should i do remove them the head of the screws are damaged i want to remove them and replace them with new ones...what should i do...thank you mate...
I currently can't justify solid state. It's so much less memory for the same money you could easily get a great like 2TB traditional drive. As a photographer at least, capacity is really important.
@Udontgetmymetal just use a machine with an ssd, I dare you. it feels like a brand new machine. don't forget hdd's use the same technology since ages, they're slow as hell. when you install an ssd it feels like a new computer, it's super fast.
Of all the long, convoluted, and junky videos on various "how tos", this one is a bit of a refresher. Very well done. I just ordered a new MacBook Pro 15" with 2.5GHz and have ordered a OCZ Vertex . Now I need to find a good video that clearly explains how to create a boot media using my USB flash drive. I plan on immediately replacing the 750GB HDD with 240 SSD upon arrival of both items. I even already bought an adapter from amazon.com as well, to move the HDD to replace Optical Drive. :)
@jim1621 You pretty much need an adapter as nobody actually makes anything that can house a 2.5 HDD. Although since an ssd does not have any moving parts and isnt affected by vibration you can gheto rig it ive seen people literally tape them in their desktop pc's. Might not want to do that with a laptop though since it will be tilted in travel.
@fedefuentes well firstable you need to download the lion recovery disk and put it into a usb thumbdrive you can download it on the apple website. to transfer the data you need to use an enclosure and put it in to your computer and transfer the data hope this work for ya
Ok I have a question ... I´m definitely getting and SSD for my Macbook Pro Mid 2010 (2.24 Ghz I think) I´m toying with either an Intel 320 160, OCW Mercury Extreme 6gb-s, and this OCZ Vertex 3 ... I´m running Lion but I´ve heard bad things about TRIM support for 3rd party SSD´s and I don´t want to shell out the cash for a drive that´ll dissapoint me especially since I´m heading overseas in the next week and not having a working mac would be a hemorrhoid on a crotchrocket advice? @unboxtherapy
So let me get this straight. This allows you to not only have a solid state drive, but also, your regular hard drive as well, while still having an optical drive to insert disks?
@BismillahHandcrafts yes u can but the 2009 macbook pro utilizes only sata 2 (3gbps) but the vertex 3 is Sata 3 (6gbps) so you wouldn't be able to utilize the speed of the vertex 3 so i recommend you to buy the vertex 2 (3gbps).
@BismillahHandcrafts Yes but you'll want to keep the optical drive because theres a speed fix you need to do and have to do that off a bootable Linux disc
Hey where can I get one of those optibay style adapters? I want to take out the optical drive out of my MacBook Pro 13" and move my stock hard drive in its place.
This is a very very very helpful video, thanks for posting!
I do have a few questions though. I Would like to put an SSD in my computer as well. I have the late 2011 15inch macbook pro. At some point, I would like to put an SSD in the computer so that it can run a bit faster. I am confused with the "SATA XX(X)" What is this sata thing? What type of sata should I get for my computer? my email is modeltrain9500@gmail(dot)com If you could help me that would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance
Sollid State Disk. Its much faster than a regular HDD, saves up battery power, makes less noise, doesnt' get very hot and doesn't break as easy as an HDD.
@AllAboutMac27 Yes, absolutely: As long as you're happy with having not much in the way of internal storage. It doesn't make much much sense however, as you can easily use an external drive for your old school compact disks. I for one, would happily trade my internal superdrive for ssd performance plus an extra 750Gb or so of internal storage. Who carries disks with them when on the road anyway? This is a portable computer...
@ahsan101 As i understand it, the new sandforce chipset drives have hardware trim, so OS trim isn't necessary. The crucial m4 is supposed to be the most stable.
@pavilionalex A lot of people here seem to want to keep their old superdrives installed. If that's what you want, do it: There's no problem with it. I'd think that buying an external superdrive for burning cd's and such would be a more sensible solution as one can have much more internal storage which [I'd think] is faster and more convenient... The external superdrive is pretty small, and it will ft into your bag easily. I see it as an accessory that is only used occasionally.
Hey I know this is going to sound pretty ignorant, but for someone who uses the optical drive somewhat frequently, and of course assuming the larger storage capacity of the 240gb vertex 3 model, I don't actually need to remove the optical drive do I? I can't see why it would be required, but thought id ask anyways..I apologise for the stupid question. Also, would I just create a recent time machine backup and boot from osx disk? Any info from anyone would be appreciated, thanks for the video.
i already bought all the accessories needed for this, but now i have a quick question if anyone can help me.
how do i transfer all the data to the new ssd hd. i need to reinstall lion and do a time machine restore or is there a way to mirror the info from the old hd to the new one?

totally new at this so im going to ask.. did you have to update the ssd? did you boot from the optical? how did you install lion and is there any more videos for noobs like myself who want to do the same thing but have only had a mac for a month... ;)
@carmyn87 You most likely disconnected the SATA connector from the hard drive. The flashing folder w/ question mark usually means that the computer cannot find the operating system, and it can't find it because there is no hard drive. I would recommend unscrewing the back and checking that connector. Hopefully that fixes your problem. If not, then you will need a new hard drive, which in reality, won't be that expensive.
Hey i was just wondering, does anyone know if you can swap out your hdd for a ssd without having to put your hdd in the optical drive area. Beacause i want to keep my optical drive but still upgrade to a ssd, Thanks.
i want to make my macbook pro the best it can be no matter the cost, please tell me some things i should get and install or do. please like this comment so he can see it please.
i accidentally pushed my bf mac book from the bed, it was in his bag, when i inspected the laptop, it had a tiny dent underneath in the center from when it landed on the charger, other than that it was still in good condition until i turned it on and was faced with the flashing question mark. is it fatal? would i need to take a look inside to see if something has come loose. i feel so bad
@JDFrates similar to an SSD card that you put in a digital camera. SSD a similar to a hard drive but doesn't use moving parts to retrieve and write data..therefore it makes the response time much quicker than the traditional hard drive
@0100010010EB If something breaks as a side effect of the installation then yes BUT you would always try reverse the whole process back to the state it was purchased as and pray they don't realise when you take it in for repairs...
If you install the OS on a HDD or SSD in the Optibay you will have problems with sleep. Because the PC doesn't wake up the Optibay when returning from sleep.... so if you have a RAID or install in the Optibay disable sleep...
Have you had any problems with the Vertex 3? im buying mine either today or tomorrow and idk if i should get the vertex 3 max iops or the OWC Mercury extreme pro 6g. Any suggestions?? i have a 2011 13 inch macbook pro
#00 is wrong size. That will strip out or round off the screw more easily. You should use a #000 or #0000. Just depends on the width of the head, some are fatter than others.
I'm not too familiar with the technicalities of SSDs, so i ask: did you do any firmware updates? And is there anything extra you have to do after installing the drive to take care of it such as enabling any TRIM support?
Wouldn't it be a better idea to install the SSD in the optical bay area and leave the HDD in the cage? As I see this, the HDD area provides a better shock protection and noise reduction (using those hooks on the side).
@cetchmoh The optical bay is only 3 Gigabit. The traditional bay is 6 Gigabit. I would've loved to put the SSD in the optical drive bay, but would have suffered a significant performance hit.
@unboxtherapy Would it really? Have you been testing it? I thought 6 Gigabit bus is overestimated. Thanks for the answer, I'm planning to upgrade my MBP with SSD too.
@unboxtherapy I've also read that MacBook Pro's have experienced problems waking from sleep when the SSD is in the optical drive bay. They still attempt to access the original HDD bay area to wake while the OS is running through the optical drive bay subsequently causing some silent confusion.
@cetchmoh Also it has been documented that you get problems waking up from sleep mode if you put it in the opti bay, cuz the system doesn`t look there for OS.
I would LOVE to do this for my MBP, but I've been reading online about how to actually use an ssd. From what I understand, it's slightly different as far as writing. You can't rewrite? So TRIM is supposed to help with that? It's a little confusing.. And also, how can I save the bootup process to my ssd and then save files/documents to the hdd? That confuses me too!! Lol. Any help/video? would be GREAT! I'm not apple savvy. In fact this is my first and I don't want to screw anything up on this b
Have you had any problems with with the firmware updating or with freezing or getting the blue screen of death? I'm looking into getting the vertex 3 max iops cuz I'm getting a good deal on one
@unboxtherapy Ohh ok cool... Post a review to see how everything is going... I'm putting in a data doubler from OWC so I can run dual ssd and HDD so I'm debating whether the OWC mercury pro 6g and the vertex 3 max iops. I know OWC makes more Mac friendly products that's why I'm leaning toward them right now but idk any suggestions???
@AlexPR2123 yea, that seems a bit scary. I was going to recommend the V3 for my cousin but without TRIM support and proper mac firmware support I figured it was a bad idea.
@FillingTheGap1 The Vertex 3 uses a Sandforce controller with it's own background garbage collection system. Because of this - TRIM becomes less important. Anandtech tested the drive after significant usage and it still showed a major performance advantage over competitors.
The only SSDs currently supporting TRIM in OSX are the factory installed Toshibas. That being said they are about half as fast as this Vertex 3. Also, most are expecting TRIM support (for most SSDs) with the release of Lion
@unboxtherapy thats good news. Except, I saw in the forums some are having chugging issues. It's killing me that I can't recommend this. Shes not computer literate and if it gets slow downs/lockups at college that's no good. Without lion and/or TRIM this drive could suffer. I'm going to have to recommend the Apple SSD, it's Samsung now so that's better. I need something she can truly rely on. Maybe a year form now she can get a different SSD. Even with the Apple SSD shes going to get spoiled. :)

I got my SSD drive, but I can't install it yet until you post the next video..
erosaffinity115 7 months ago

AlexPR2123 7 months ago
Why do you need 2 HDD's and no optical drive?
TheMacAttack1111 7 months ago
#00 is wrong size. That will strip out or round off the screw more easily. You should use a #000 or #0000. Just depends on the width of the head, some are fatter than others.

I'm not too familiar with the technicalities of SSDs, so i ask: did you do any firmware updates? And is there anything extra you have to do after installing the drive to take care of it such as enabling any TRIM support?
fedsanity 8 months ago
Wouldn't it be a better idea to install the SSD in the optical bay area and leave the HDD in the cage? As I see this, the HDD area provides a better shock protection and noise reduction (using those hooks on the side).
cetchmoh 8 months ago
@cetchmoh The optical bay is only 3 Gigabit. The traditional bay is 6 Gigabit. I would've loved to put the SSD in the optical drive bay, but would have suffered a significant performance hit.
unboxtherapy 8 months ago 10
@unboxtherapy Would it really? Have you been testing it? I thought 6 Gigabit bus is overestimated. Thanks for the answer, I'm planning to upgrade my MBP with SSD too.
xaero212 8 months ago
@unboxtherapy how to check whether the port is at 3gb/6gb? i heard this problem only occurs in 15/17inch 2011 model.. cmiiw
Rayvandy 6 months ago
@unboxtherapy I've also read that MacBook Pro's have experienced problems waking from sleep when the SSD is in the optical drive bay. They still attempt to access the original HDD bay area to wake while the OS is running through the optical drive bay subsequently causing some silent confusion.
comeondown 4 months ago
@cetchmoh Also it has been documented that you get problems waking up from sleep mode if you put it in the opti bay, cuz the system doesn`t look there for OS.

@jpcwa74 Only on the hard drive bay, not optical.

Any can u please tell me wat did does and how does it improve the performance??
haomingho 8 months ago

AlexPR2123 8 months ago
@AlexPR2123 No problems yet. Just insane speed! Guess I'll have to wait and see, it's only been in for a couple days.
unboxtherapy 8 months ago
@unboxtherapy Ohh ok cool... Post a review to see how everything is going... I'm putting in a data doubler from OWC so I can run dual ssd and HDD so I'm debating whether the OWC mercury pro 6g and the vertex 3 max iops. I know OWC makes more Mac friendly products that's why I'm leaning toward them right now but idk any suggestions???
AlexPR2123 8 months ago
@AlexPR2123 yea, that seems a bit scary. I was going to recommend the V3 for my cousin but without TRIM support and proper mac firmware support I figured it was a bad idea.
FillingTheGap1 8 months ago
@FillingTheGap1 The Vertex 3 uses a Sandforce controller with it's own background garbage collection system. Because of this - TRIM becomes less important. Anandtech tested the drive after significant usage and it still showed a major performance advantage over competitors.
The only SSDs currently supporting TRIM in OSX are the factory installed Toshibas. That being said they are about half as fast as this Vertex 3. Also, most are expecting TRIM support (for most SSDs) with the release of Lion
unboxtherapy 8 months ago
@unboxtherapy thats good news. Except, I saw in the forums some are having chugging issues. It's killing me that I can't recommend this. Shes not computer literate and if it gets slow downs/lockups at college that's no good. Without lion and/or TRIM this drive could suffer. I'm going to have to recommend the Apple SSD, it's Samsung now so that's better. I need something she can truly rely on. Maybe a year form now she can get a different SSD. Even with the Apple SSD shes going to get spoiled. :)
