While I LOVE the entire American Pie album (do they even call them "albums" anymore?) Empty Chairs is easily my favorite Don McLean Song. Though I almost never like the live version as much as the studio recorded version.
the problem that you hear in the guitar is the difference between steal strings and classical or cat guts. what you hear in his voice is a combination of a video camera mic and 30 years of added age on his vocal cords.
Not true, I have an old live album of his done live back in the seventies, and he makes the same mistakes. As far as the string comment, I never mentioned anything about strings, and he always uses steel.
this is one of the most fantastic songs ever written don sings it soo well live and he is such a nice guy in person ..... if youre ever in his company ..... he drinks guinness and appriciates u sendin a round up to the stage lol what a performer
The sound man should have been terminated after this show. Please refer to the recorded version.

wendyguppy thanks for the post -- it's impossible to get fired up to this song though, somatic with no finish.

"Strumming my pain with his finger, singing my life with his words, "
"Killing Me Softly With His Song" is a response to Don McLean singing "Empty Chairs"
"I felt all flushed with fever, embarrassed by the crowd. I felt he'd found my letters and read each one out loud. "
"I prayed that he would finish but he just kept right on"
"I felt as if he knew me, in all my dark despair, and then he looked right through me as if I wasn't there."
Two very personal songs.

I love this song, but his live version isn't very good, he is all over the map and off key in alot of places.
