The objective is very noble, but the life span of this facility is questionable. America generates 3,000 tons of radioactive waste per year for its 103 nuclear plants. Accordingly it (facility) is good for 10,000 years. The half life of plutonium is 24,000 years, ergo; it'll actually take 240,000 years before you can hold a chunk in your hand without being poisoned by radiations. By the way it cost American taxpayers about 53 billion dollars.
@MrNoeboy There is no question that more facilities like Yucca will need to be built in the future if the nuclear power industry is going to keep generating high-level waste, but in the next 20-30 years, it should be possible to eliminate approx. 90% of the waste using advanced reprocessing techniques. And the $53B figure was the projected cost for the lifetime of the repository calcualted in 2001. It's now projected at $90 if it somehow went forward. $13.5B has been spent there already.
@NV4CFE I dont think the technology is all that promising. if they can do that why not a technology that can also contain carbon emissions? this is another case is it not?, it would take at lenght for me to mention more of environmental waste that will pester the future of our children. the good thing about this hullaballo is at least they are sthriving to make this planet habitable...for whats left of it..
2012 Notice on the debate last night when NV asked if nuclear waste was going to be dumped on them?
Perry and Romney saw it as a matter of PAYING NV ENOUGH MONEY and only Ron Paul said IT WAS A CONSTITUTIONAL STATES RIGHT ISSUE! To me, it showed how those 3 politicians' minds work.
What do you think? Does MONEY solve everything, or does the CONSTITUTION?
@MrNoeboy Actually YMP hasn't cost a single Tax Dollar. The money for YMP comes from rate payers and is taken out of power bills. It won't cost a single tax dollar to finish the project. However, not completing the project is going to result in billions of dollars worth of law suits against the federal government (many lawsuits have already been filed, with more being filed daily) which will come from tax payers.
it is not a good idea to put all of the nuclear waste in one place, because that's where the terrorists will go to blow it up. They will infiltrate the plant by getting jobs there over many years and eventually will strike.
RIP Yucca Mountain.

@NV4CFE Can you elaborate on those reprocessing techniques you were spoke of?

@pete5668 They could also do that with all the nuclear power plants as well....
