I think Canon deserves the utmost respect for delivering an 18 MP sensor. Primarily for two reasons.

Renowned camera and lens design historian Erwin Puts explains one. That no Japanese manufacture has hardly a lens at all in the current line that could resolve highly enough to take advantage of a 36+ MP sensor. 18 however could be perfect. Roger Cicala said that plain and simple; the big companies don't have the quality control capabilities, lens or body wise, for 30+ MPs.

I have great respect for you and all of those who were desiring/expecting more from this camera, but I commend Canon for being realistic as well. They definitely know their limits, and the limits of mass produced digital cameras in the 135 format. For lenses that can take advantage of 40MPs we need lenses that are medium-large format size (physically, elements/barrel). And we already have those, in the wonderful medium format digital systems available.

@Rueffilicious obviously what is missing is proper info on your part... less mega pixel does not mean less quality picture. they were just trying to put a realistic number of pixels that can be properly utilized than giving out more than 21 megapix that cannot be handled in real life photography. and oh it's "better THAN today" and it's "took THEIR camera's"..... cheers mate.
