It's a Lunati solid roller, part no. 50103 ... lift is 0.591 int 0.597 exh, and duration is 250 int 259 exh at .050. The LSA is 106, and the ICL is 102.
It's lowered a little. It already had coils cut in the front, and I removed a leaf and shortened another one in the rear. It's in the process of getting the pro-touring treatment. I'm planning on QA1 and DSE suspension next.
There is absolutely NO reason why anything should sound this beautiful. My goodness, man -what an absolutely perfect sound. Nice job, and beautiful car. I know you're proud of that jewel.
Thanks! And yes, I am...I just hope it sounds just as brutal with the new cam and exhaust that it's going to get when I put it back on the road. It should, though.
Right now it's just the body on a rotisserie...nothing too exciting. I'm hoping to get it stripped, replace the tail panel, and get it into primer by this fall.
Cool, I wish I could say I was that far along on my 71 camaro, it's still sitting. Have to finish putting together my 67 chevy pickup before I start on my camaro. Soon hopefully. I was looking at using that 'EZ-EFI' fuel injection setup, ever heard any bad feed back on that system?
Yeah, a solid roller requires a bronze gear, or composite, which is what I have...a Comp Cams #12140, Composite, Carbon Ultra-Poly gear, at $110. They don't wear out like the bronze ones do.
@70camaro406 Oh cool, I didn't know they made anything better than the bronze one, I'll have to get one of those for my camaro. How long does a bronze one usually last? I have one in my 67 Chevy pickup but I haven't checked it since I put that engine together back in 02'.
I'm not sure how long they normally last, but if you run it on the street, they'll wear out faster, that's why I went with the poly gear. I'm running the MSD 85551 Pro-Billet distributor with magnetic trigger and mechanical advance, with the springs and weights set so the timing if fully advanced by 2000 rpms.
You both are right. A stock 400 has 4.125" bore and 3.75" stroke with 5.565" rods. An average 406, like mine, has 4.155" bore, 3.75" stroke, and 5.7" rods...however, the size of the rod doesn't change anything as far as size, it just helps in the piston dwell and side-to-side movement during the cycle. The piston pins are located higher up for the longer rods.
THANKS MAN FOR THE INFO I PUT A 3.5 IN TODAY REALLY HAVE NOT HAD A CHANCE TO TUNE ON IT YET CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT YOUR MIXTURE SCREWS ARE SET AT MINE ARE 1 TURN FRONT 1 TURN REAR .. MAN YOUR CAR RESPONDS VERY WELL THANKS RICK

I'm running a Holley 830 Chokeless race carb, 3.5 power valve in the front, block off in the back, 30cc accelerator pump in the front and 50cc in the back, 76 jets in the front and 86 jets in the back, and #31 squirters front and back. Having the right power valve will make a big difference in slow speed drivability. It made mine easier to drive around town. Sounds like you could use a 3.5 too.

i get off to that sound, i wish my girlfirend could make that sound, haha awsome car man. ill be puttn either a 383 stroker or a 400 sbc in my elcamino with hopes of that sound.
yeah, i knew it had a heavy overlap. thats deffinately a killer torque cam, but not good for blowers at all. the charge will bounce right out the exhaust with a 106 overlap. but DAMN it sounds sweet! i might not put a blower on it, still debating.
might see what i can do with engine right now. i wanna go with the c400 heads from john kaase. they flow 400 cfm at max lift. those are sick numbers..hence the blower. i have yer email saved..i will check it out from time to time while in iraq..
Here's the Ford Clev cam that's similar from Lunati:
Solid roller, rough Idle. Good cam for high performance street, oval track, mud bog or bracket racing applications. Has excellent valve train life. Needs 3500-4000 RPM stall converter, headers, 10:1 compression ratio or better and 3.90 gearing or better.
Got plans to run a 91 camaro with a 406 stroker with mild lift .515 roller rockers lunati cam scat crank forged i beams on a 5 speed so I like lunati like this camaro and I tell u they really open up a engine. Going with big duration eventhough its streetable mainly for top end power she makes great torque
whats yer overlap on that cam? i am trying to match a good lsa with duration for a nice lopey idle but more for top end from a 445 Cleveland with 400cfm heads. i want the lope, but i want 1500-6500 poer band. and this sound right here...
Sorry for the delay...here are all the specs from the Lunati website:
-Solid roller, rough idle. Good cam for oval track racing on 1/4 - 3/8 mile tracks. Works well in 350-406 cubic inch motors and has strong mid-range torque and horsepower.
It didn't need any piston clearancing. I have flat top pistons with 5.7 rods. The cam is a Lunati solid roller # 50103...Int-0.591" Ex-0.597" with duration at 0.050 at 250 259...This cam works great with these heads. I'd give Lunati a call and see what they recommend. They picked this one out for me.
oh ok sweet im building a 406 thats just like the one in your maro thats going in my third gen.. yours sounds pretty dang stout.. great job! cant wait to see it in its pro-touring form
210's are great for anything up to a 427 or so. they can support 550 horsepower easy out of the box. 227's are best for at least a 427 and strictly racing. they would be a real dog on the street below like 3500 rpm with an engine under 400 inches
Nice Camaro. Whats thw low end grunt/torque like with the 210's on the 406. I'm condidering 210's but if there is still pleanty of power below 3000 rpm then I may opt for the 227's?
About the power below 3000? Honestly, I don't know...I've only had the car on the road with a TH350 and a 4000 stall converter. Cruising, it felt torquey, but whenever I mashed the gas, the converter would stall around 4k and it would accelerate from there.
My plan is to put a Magnum T-56 6 spd behind this engine just the way it is. It should have sufficient power down low...my Desktop Dyno shows over 400 ft lbs of torque as low as 2500 rpms. If it's a street motor, then go 210's.
Thanks again. I'll take your advice. What do you think about the new AFR 220's? My application is blown with a Procharger F1C and 3000rpm stall. I had a 355 with the same blower and AFR 195's. It was great but I don't want to loose that low end grunt when I change upto a 406.
The 220's look great too. Since you're running a supercharger, it's probably not a bad idea. I can tell you though, on my combo, it revs harder and higher than any of my friend's 406's, except for my Dad's, who is running the AFR 227's.
Thanks. AFR #1103, 210cc runner, 100% cnc'd, 2.08 int, 1.60 exh valves. And the intake is an out-of-the-box Edelbrock Super Victor with a 2" open spacer.
I keep coming back for more. That thing sounds Soooo PISSA !!!!.. Cant wait to see it in Pro Touring Trim. I wanna do one in a Trans-Am format. Set it up for Road racing... Damm that thing is killer... Good Job!
Sort of...here are the parts and Summit part numbers...the headers are Hooker Super Comps 1 7/8" (2239-1HKR), the exhaust pipes are 3.5" x 4' ( SUM-640035), the mufflers are Borla XR1 race mufflers 3.5" (BOR-40945), and the turndowns are 3.5" ones from Flowmaster (I like their style better) (FLO-T3535). exhaust totalled over $1k). Although I liked how it sounded, for my pro-touring build, I'm going to put a full 3" exhaust with x-pipe and Dynomax Ultra-flo's on it next.
Yeah, the best run was an 11.05 @ 120.9, with a 1.509 60'. That was pump gas, with air cleaner and mufflers, M/T drag radials, and during the month of August, '07. It's on a rotisserie right now getting restored....into a pro-touring car.
The best time I got from it was an 11.05 @ 120.9, with a 1.509 60ft. That was with pump gas, air cleaner in place, M/T drag radials, and 85 degree weather. The last time I took it to the track, the weather was in the upper 40's (November), and traction was crap...I ended up breaking an axle due to the tires scratching for traction. They grabbed, spun, then grabbed again...that happened every run, and let go on the 5th run that day.
The car is currently being rebuilt into a pro-touring car.
no, you cant. solid rollers are way more agressive, they pull the intake off the seat a lot quicker, have more duration at .020, all of which contributes to more area under the curve, which translates into more power.
after listening a few times your video i thing i prefere your sound of mufller than my flowmasters super 44. what type of borla muffler you have? tanks
It was set up for street/strip and I didn't want any backpressure, plus my dad had the same exhaust on his Nova, and I liked the way it sounded. The next exhaust, however, will be a full 3" w/ x pipe and Dynomax Ultra-Flo's.
Actually, what gives a good fast rev is 1. a really lightweight rotating assembly, or 2. really good volumetric efficiency, both coupled with a really good tuning on the carb. Roller cam just reduces friction a small amount, not the cause of a quick rev.
intake centerline has a great effect, along with lobe separation. the rotating mass has the biggest effect. less weight is less inertia. will rev up quick and come back to idle fast
hey man it sounds a little flat and its mid range when you rev it just dosent sound strong enough or at least to its full potential, it may just be the video but thats my opinion.
It does sound different on this video as it does in person. I took the video with a Kodak Easyshare digital camera, so it's a pretty basic vid. The car is healthy enough to run low 11's...with a best of 11.05 at 121, in the same tune as the video.
Listen to it in my other videos, I rev it much higher in those.
At the time, I was looking at all-out performance. But really, if I drove it more than 1,000 miles a year, I'd go hydraulic roller, but since I don't put that many miles on it, I set the lash once a year and forget it. With poly locks and a stud girdle, it's rarely a hair off on lash anyway. I though about changing it, but you're talking another $1,000 to change over to hyd roller. That's okay, it runs too good to change cams. If I did anything, I'd go to an RPM Air-Gap intake.
They are stock 2nd gen Z28 wheels with 255/60-15's inback, and 245/60-15's in front. My other video shows it with the Weld wheels and 275/60-15 M/T Drag Radials.
sounds good, I'd say at least a 108 center-line on the cam, whats in there for cam?

The 220's look great too. Since you're running a supercharger, it's probably not a bad idea. I can tell you though, on my combo, it revs harder and higher than any of my friend's 406's, except for my Dad's, who is running the AFR 227's.

Thanks. AFR #1103, 210cc runner, 100% cnc'd, 2.08 int, 1.60 exh valves. And the intake is an out-of-the-box Edelbrock Super Victor with a 2" open spacer.
70camaro406 2 years ago
What type of mufflers do you have? Are those dumps? Manufacturer, size, etc.
Its music to my ears... great job.
rebelrobz 2 years ago
Borla XR-1 race mufflers, 3.5", # 40945...with 3.5" Flowmaster turndowns at 45 degrees.
70camaro406 2 years ago
I keep coming back for more. That thing sounds Soooo PISSA !!!!.. Cant wait to see it in Pro Touring Trim. I wanna do one in a Trans-Am format. Set it up for Road racing... Damm that thing is killer... Good Job!
Foxxtrott1100 2 years ago
Thanks!
70camaro406 2 years ago
Nice, what exactly are Flowmaster turndowns? Basically you have Borla exhaust if I am reading this correctly.
rebelrobz 2 years ago
Sort of...here are the parts and Summit part numbers...the headers are Hooker Super Comps 1 7/8" (2239-1HKR), the exhaust pipes are 3.5" x 4' ( SUM-640035), the mufflers are Borla XR1 race mufflers 3.5" (BOR-40945), and the turndowns are 3.5" ones from Flowmaster (I like their style better) (FLO-T3535). exhaust totalled over $1k). Although I liked how it sounded, for my pro-touring build, I'm going to put a full 3" exhaust with x-pipe and Dynomax Ultra-flo's on it next.

great !
morini29 2 years ago
hey have you ever had that at the track?
ericg83z 2 years ago
Yeah, the best run was an 11.05 @ 120.9, with a 1.509 60'. That was pump gas, with air cleaner and mufflers, M/T drag radials, and during the month of August, '07. It's on a rotisserie right now getting restored....into a pro-touring car.

niclovin89302 2 years ago
Nothing exotic...Scat 9000 crank (3.75"), Wheeler Sportsman Lite rods (5.7"), Badger hypereutectic flat-top pistons (10.8 w/ 64cc), Lunati solid roller 50103---0.591-0.597 lift, 250 259 dur @ 0.050, AFR 210 comp ported - 100% cnc'd, 2.08 1.60 valves with 66cc chambers, stud girdle, and Miller PVS 1.6 roller rockers.
70camaro406 2 years ago
what intake are you running? have you taken it to the track?
jasongielish 2 years ago
It's got an Edelbrock Super Victor with a 2" open spacer
70camaro406 2 years ago
The best time I got from it was an 11.05 @ 120.9, with a 1.509 60ft. That was with pump gas, air cleaner in place, M/T drag radials, and 85 degree weather. The last time I took it to the track, the weather was in the upper 40's (November), and traction was crap...I ended up breaking an axle due to the tires scratching for traction. They grabbed, spun, then grabbed again...that happened every run, and let go on the 5th run that day.
The car is currently being rebuilt into a pro-touring car.
70camaro406 2 years ago
Sorry to disappoint, but it runs straight pump gas, 93 octane.

chevy3098 2 years ago
no, you cant. solid rollers are way more agressive, they pull the intake off the seat a lot quicker, have more duration at .020, all of which contributes to more area under the curve, which translates into more power.

after listening a few times your video i thing i prefere your sound of mufller than my flowmasters super 44. what type of borla muffler you have? tanks
nicdaking 3 years ago
It's their Top Sportsman...now called XR-1 Race muffler, in 3 1/2" size...the number is BOR-40945.
70camaro406 2 years ago
Why so big for the size of the pipes? isnt that a little to big for a v8?lol
Slideways81chevy 2 years ago
It was set up for street/strip and I didn't want any backpressure, plus my dad had the same exhaust on his Nova, and I liked the way it sounded. The next exhaust, however, will be a full 3" w/ x pipe and Dynomax Ultra-Flo's.
70camaro406 2 years ago
That will wake the neghbours, right?

ericg83z 3 years ago
With the 1.6 rockers, it's .630 .637 lift, 250 259 dur @ .050, 106 CL 102 LS.
70camaro406 3 years ago
the roller cam is that what gives it that quick rev
screaming355 3 years ago 2
Actually, what gives a good fast rev is 1. a really lightweight rotating assembly, or 2. really good volumetric efficiency, both coupled with a really good tuning on the carb. Roller cam just reduces friction a small amount, not the cause of a quick rev.
BigRoy1978 3 years ago
intake centerline has a great effect, along with lobe separation. the rotating mass has the biggest effect. less weight is less inertia. will rev up quick and come back to idle fast

All of that lump and 11.05. Gotta love 5mpg.

soundz like a marching band playing sweet...
sabrom 3 years ago
hey man it sounds a little flat and its mid range when you rev it just dosent sound strong enough or at least to its full potential, it may just be the video but thats my opinion.
Marshallman1960 3 years ago
It does sound different on this video as it does in person. I took the video with a Kodak Easyshare digital camera, so it's a pretty basic vid. The car is healthy enough to run low 11's...with a best of 11.05 at 121, in the same tune as the video.
Listen to it in my other videos, I rev it much higher in those.
70camaro406 3 years ago

between 500-550. It's been 11.05 @ 121 with a 1.509 60'.
70camaro406 3 years ago
What kind of compression are you running. I've got a 18 degree 358 with a mild 9.5:1
hans5777 3 years ago
10.5:1 compression. I run pump 92 or 93.
70camaro406 3 years ago
At the time, I was looking at all-out performance. But really, if I drove it more than 1,000 miles a year, I'd go hydraulic roller, but since I don't put that many miles on it, I set the lash once a year and forget it. With poly locks and a stud girdle, it's rarely a hair off on lash anyway. I though about changing it, but you're talking another $1,000 to change over to hyd roller. That's okay, it runs too good to change cams. If I did anything, I'd go to an RPM Air-Gap intake.
70camaro406 3 years ago
i have 1 of them air gaps on my 78 camaro 454..love it
