  • The Hollies hands down over the Beattles, no comparison!

  • beacouse i am beatles fan gotta say its better than this, but this is not bad at all! love these stemmas

  • 2nd only to the Herb Alpert instrumental version, as vocals go on this song, they rank first.

  • I like the drummer's clothes

  • Comment removed

  • Odd that this isn't in color, being performed in 1969.

  • Great version but not raw like the Beatles version, you certainly don't need a full orchestra to back this great song up, beatles for me hands down.

  • From Brazil

The beatles were genius... But the hollies are great.

    Thanks for this video... fantastic.

  • love the beatles, but the hollies version is way better

  • Hollies do this much much better~~~ j

  • Meanwhile, bowties are cool !

  • My favorite version.

  • this is a more pro version than the beatles s'...my opinion

  • Wow, they look so handsome, sexy, and cute here. Love those suits. Tony is HOT!!

  • 1:41 Watch as Terry loses his guitar pick but keeps going as he looks around for it. What a pro!

  • the beatles r the better band, but the hollies did this song better, honestly

  • meh. Beatles are good, but this is a different arrangement. i personally like the Beatles version better (probably because i heard it first), but i'm not hating on this one. Hollies are good too. :)

  • Top comments say the Beatles did this better? Did they even listen to the Hollies version or read the original sheet music? Beatles way too slow, Hollies almost a little too fast but kept the feel of the song as Herp Alpert did in the instrumental. I played this song growning up and the sheet music directs you to play slow in the intro then speed way up for the main body and slow where Herp slows of the which the Beatles did not do. Hollies way better!

  • This is a vocal adaptation of the Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass version.... nice job though....

  • I need a suit like that ...

  • Herb Alpert did this one.....

    .Without vocals. Still great job.

  • I have to put my two cents worth in on best band ever..ABBA..Followed closely by The Beach Boys

  • 8 people don't like honey

  • Amazing!!

  • the "shake it" part was pure class

  • very enjoyable, maybe a bit caberetish, but proffesional prefer their album version this is a better version than Beatles, and the Hollies ie Tony Hicks better guitarist than George Harrison and Bobby Elliot better drummer than Ringo, and Allan superior singer to bothe John and Paul.

  • @purpledave100 You hit the nail on the head! I agree with you totally about Tony, Bobby and Allan.

  • @purpledave100 and you and my X girlfriend would get along just fine....

  • different musical arregments that's all

  • THE HOLLIES & THE BEATLES= BEST OF THE 60S

  • was this from 1969?

  • Fuck the beatles. Hollies rules =)

  • @seuko Your mom fucked a beetle and then accidentally shit you

  • Gran versión de "The Hollies" muy interesante y buenos arreglos. Sin duda muy diferente a la de "The Beatles" ambas versiones son muy buenas . Saludos desde México..

  • I still prefer Herb Alpert and the TJB, but it's nice to hear the lyrics.

  • Hollies do this better, much jazzier. kill the brass. the album version is much better.

  • Comment removed

  • Verbal at the pace of Tiuanna(sp?) Brass. Right on

  • BEATLES IS BETTER

  • I've always considered this a Beatles song, but this is a surprisingly good version!

  • A taste of honey both groups did a superb job.But completely different.

  • i love seeing Tony in those days. Cute....and his playing is awesome!

  • Strange.. in my whole life i never knew this song had words..50 some odd years and I never knew..I thought it was instrumental.. Welcome me out from under my rock i guess..

  • We vote the Hollies do this the best. Thanks for posting.

  • We vote the Hollies do this the best.

  • much better is the version of the singer Lenny Welch, who was the first and the pioneer in singing this song, so you have to give credit to him ... The Beatles did it better but they did not made up ....ok? The Hollies simply gave a more lively and cheerful version of the song, in general I like all 3 versions of Lenny Welch, of The Beatles and The Hollies, D

  • Excellent!

  • i like this version much more than beatles

  • dudes...it was herb albert and tijuana brass style...

    way groovy...

  • This song album which is what I go to Hollys

  • This is shite. The Hollies (who DID realease some great singles) are a fucking cabaret band here.

  • This was one of those songs that many bands did during the sixties. The album version is group thing and not a live performance with a big band backing. I prefer the more rock/ballad version off the album

  • Johnny Rivers does a killer version of "A Taste of Honey" as well; it's just one of those songs that no one can ruin.

  • the singer was no rocker

  • omg i thought the beatles wrote this song!!! did they??

  • @1lundun

The Beatles didn't write it but they made it popular when they released their cover of it on their first album, Please Please Me (1963). It was written originally for Broadway I think

  • I like the Early Hollies much better. Great Band!!

  • Was good but too many, let's try with a quartet

  • Wow, this is a great version of Taste of Honey. Most of the time when a rock band plays a swing tune the drummer can't handle it. Bobby Elliot sounds awesome. His fills are great. I remember Bon Jovi tried to do a swing version of one of their hits on MTV or VH1. It was terrible. Didn't swing at all.

  • Screw the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They waited forever to induct The Hollies, such a great band, and in my top 6 favorite bands.

  • No words! Just incredible!

  • Check out the Tempations version of this song, it nice too.

  • Herb Albert wins this time..................

  • cool

  • The Hollies are great. I liked them better when Graham Nash was with them though.

  • idk i like all the versions that ive heard of this songs everybody puts their on little twist to it its cute

  • GREAT VERSION !!!!!!!!

  • Allan Clarke is the best! The Hollies Forever!

  • McCartney's singing of it is more romantic, but this version by the Hollies, on the whole, is more dynamic and interesting, IMO.

  • they have been made wonderful musci and i do agree that they have been unterrated consequentelly.... but i always loved them. this has nothing to do that i am a strong beatles fan... you can love one opera and others too.... music has so much faces - this is one.... and even one of the best sides....... my opinion

  • Bobby Darin also has a nice version of this song

  • did they make up words to this song?

  • @bdhcarbon no .. they changed the original lines a bit but there is nothing extra. i know it beacause i am learning actually the original version ....

  • This is actually amazing, thanks for uploading :)

  • I happen to like the Hollies versions of this song better than the Beatles, even though I LOVE The Beatles.

  • Very underated group

  • Thanks agaqin for posting... lovin it.

  • no one mentions that this version appears to actually be a live version. If you're going to draw parallels between the beatles and these guys, put this up against any live Beatles recording and I think you will have your answer!!! Seriously.

  • Comment removed

  • 91 000, sweet like honey

  • This version SMOKES, regardless of what one may think of any of the other versions.

    S M O K I N '

  • NADA QUE VER THE BEATLES FOREVER¡¡ este tipo no le llega ni a la uña del pie a paul

  • This version sucks the Beatles do it soooo much better

  • BTW, when it comes to harmonies the Hollies do not take a back seat to any group including the Beatles!

  • Notice how comments such as "The Beatles version of Taste of Honey is my favorite and leave it on shelf" Personal perspectives have NOTHING to do with the excellence that this version of TOH represents. At this LEVEL a musical awareness a true afficiando realizes that there is no good or bad. The Musical excellence the Hollies display for this era is impossible to refute. If you do refute then raise your standards!!! A the time of this recording these guy's were barely 20 years old. HELLO!!!

  • @Jerrodswmhr

Thank you! Thank you!Thank you! While the Beatles are one of my favorite groups, you cannot brush off every other band. The Hollies have earned a right to be recognized for their musical contributions and not just shrugged off. While enjoyment of music is subjective at some level, raise the bar and examine the technical and historical perspectives of the piece being performed.

  • Thanks man, most people like the ones who comment here indulge in Kool-Aid, chips, beer and burgers consequently they conform to limited thinking and become cheerleaders for the obvious great artists unable and or unwilling to acknowledge other levels of musical excellence.. Thank god only the Beatles existed in the 60's man I would have been lost without them

  • Hollies done it so well then ever wow!

  • The Beatle's cover of this song is my all time favorite ever, this is the first time I heard the Hollies do it, and I think it is very nice, so thanks for sharing, but I would leave it on the shelf.

  • I totally agree. =)

  • @carolyn1e1s You should hear this with Graham Nash!

  • Dino Dinelli!

  • WHOA!!!

  • cada quien con su estilo ambas estan buenas

ero cuando la interpretan los rollingns stones caciones de los beatles no me gusta para nada

  • I like The Hollies versions of this song better than the Beatles too and I love the Beatles music.

  • Beatles do this much better, but I still love the Hollies

  • @kyannos

Ability to cover the Beatles arranged mass of talent is incredible, this song makes you feel Hollies is fast and painful to me as much as the Beatles

  • the beatles best band ever,.

  • @miccarlos Why don't you go say that about a Beatles video? Not hating on the Beatles but dude, I think they get enough praise without making random statements on other groups videos.

  • I thought that was really quite lovely. I have never seen this video before and it was quite a surprise.

    <333 ♥♥

  • Yeah! Love how they did this song too!!!

  • Those bow ties are epic. xD

I love the way they did this song. :]

  • I love the Beatles but I think the Hollies' version isn't bad at all.

  • Amazing how differently one can render this. From the famous Beatles and Herp Alpert versions to Esther Ofarim. Each one excellent in its own way! Also interesting for me the rating in the comments. It's understandable that most people have favourite version. But to abuse someone with a different taste (of honey...) is absurd.

Greetings from the Palatinate, Germany to all Hollies fans and thanx for posting this really amazing rendition, KeatonsAnnex. :):):)

  • MY LATE MOTHER ,WORKED WITH HOLLIES GUITARIST TONY HICKS, MOTHER WHO WAS A COTTON WEAVER IN THE 1950s IN NELSON LANCASHIRE UK . A REALLY NICE FAMILY. AND A WONDERFUL GROUP.

  • this is sweet, but it's the Temptations for me

  • Great post! I just saw the movie and I like the Hollies version of "A Taste Of Honey" the best.

Although Herb Alpert's instrumental from the film is great too.

  • The Hollies version was by far the BEST version! You can't beat those harmonies and that Clarke voice.

  • copied the beatles. the hollies are good but turned this song to shit

  • This is not a Beatles song. At least they covered Lenny Welch cause he recorded the first vocal version of this song which it's originally by Bobby Scott. Therefore, don't talk shit.

  • Thank you for straightening that out. But why always the hate language on YouTube?

  • You'll notice the "hate language" almost always comes from people who do post any examples of their own talent. They only come to YouTube to denigrate others and feed their injured egos.

  • The Hollies have their unique and best ballads, sometimes better than the Beatles...

  • Cool sound and version of this song.Brillant. I love Lennon but no comparison to the Hollies with this song. Thanks for posting.

  • Paul McCartney sang on their version. I think his rendition is excellent.

  • like this better than the beatles version

  • Beatles may have been more popular -- but the Hollies were the best live British act. Great harmonies and incredible stage presence and professionalism. Awesome band!

  • @sellwood86 Very well said.

  • The Beatles were not inferior to the Hollies. They had a different style and were equally hard-working musicians and songwriters.

  • John Lennon's voice was a match for Allan Clarke.

  • Thanks Vrinda, ITA, John's voice was superb.

  • You're welcome, Alex. We need to set people straight when we can.

  • I didn't know James Spader could sing like that!

  • Excelente banda the hollies y sin duda mejor elaborado q los beatles.

    saludos desde PERU

  • I agree and it's so different for them.

  • I never knew this existed. This is different. And as good as The Beatles version.

  • Oh...Oh My God what a Toon...!

Yes its much better than the "Beatles".....

    Shut up "Jenzeppelin" ya Spanner.

you stick "Bands that you know" and

    getting "Beat-up" on "Brighton Beach"

    ***YA RIDDY DIDE"***

  • i like the mix...

  • how big were the hollies back in their hay day, 3rd behind the big 2? can u tell me plze?

  • in terms of hits in the 60s and early 70s the hollies were second only to the Beatles

  • this version is entirely different from the Beatles, but, I think it's nice that we get to hear songs performed in different styles. there is nothing wrong with variety, and, it shouldn't be compared, just enjoyed as a whole. it pretty much goes without saying The Beatles kick everyone out of the water but that doesn't mean that other bands should be ignored. The Hollies are incredible and the way they performed this song was unique and very enjoyable.

  • Interesting version, but The Beatles's one is much better.

  • Whats this? the Hollies meets the Tiuana Brass

  • @HALIDAYINN - to hell with hollywood, cheers to Hollietijuana! - good one, halidayinn - critical comparisons are stupid beatle fans- beatles vs hollies - like apples and oranges - a rousing rendition - john would have appreciated it and he did.

  • i never knew there were words to this song. Great.

  • The Beatles did a much better job with this song.

  • nice

  • no...the beatles ...the best!...

  • wow they do sound like herb

  • Ah Ha! This proves my idea that The Hollies wound up more like Herb Alpert rather than the groups they started out like.

I love most of their career, and I think I've got most of their classic lp's. But man, they made some very weird decisions regarding their direction after Nash's departure.

I also love Herb Alpert, so my comment is not meant to offend the die hard fans.

  • They did a studio version of this with Nash back in '65 or '66! Only released in the States on the "Beat Group" LP on Imperial. Awesome version.

  • This man Allan Clarke is in a class of greatness by himself. As for the rest of the band members they too were greatly talented in the own right. Put this all together and you have the best ever without a doubt.

  • BETTER than the Beatles? I think not! It's commercial crap. The Hollyies are standing there trying to be clones of the Beatles, pinching one of the songs the Beatles already made into a hit. Sorry, COMMERCIAL CRAP.

  • At least, spell their name right, 'The Hollies'! (duh!)? I like 'The 'Beetles '(sp?) too, but I prefer this version of 'A Taste of Honey', as Bart Simpson would say, 'Don't have a cow, man!' (or woman)

  • The HOLLIES credibility stands the test of time, they can only be considered as a great band that has millions of fans throughout the years in dozens of countries.

  • Hmmm, seems the Beatles also liked "commercial crap" enough to record the same tune. This is actually a cover of the 1965 Herb Alpert version (featuring the powerful drumming of The Ventures Mel Taylor).

Yeah, The Beatles were thee vanguard of '60s pop, but it doesn't mean that other bands didn't occasionally outdo them, particularly in the live setting.

The Beatles must be my all time favorites, but there's so much more to life and especially music. There were a million great bands back then!

  • Can't believe in all the comments here only ONE has mentioned the incredible drumming of Bobby Elliot! He was generally recognized by his industry peers as one of thee best of the day (along with session ace Bobby Graham). The Gene Krupa of Beat, perhaps?

Sad about the cabaret outfits, but at least musically they could still wipe the floor with the competition.

  • They have a chapter on him in a book on drummers [you usually dont see that in book stores sometimes in music stores].

  • I've realized that music back then in the sixties are more happier and more jollier now if you listen to punk rock or heavy metal all they are talking about are sad and sometimes talking about death but the Beatles, and any other band in the sixties played more mellow music.

  • Hate those bloody stupid suit and bow ties. Major lapse of taste. I love the Hollies but this was always a problem with them.

    Lack of strong, hip management.

Should never have let Terry go.

  • I much prefer the Beatles before, for the Sgt.Pepper transformation and on....but man, The Hollies are so sweet!

And what a wide array, yeah?

I mean, Bus Stop to Long Cool Woman?

    That is impressive!

  • The people who really know about music, specially sixties music, know about the beatles, The hollies, The rolling stones, The mamas and the papas, The zombies, The searchers, Dave´s clark five, The loving spoonfull, even the monkees, maybe not so greatest as the beatles but good enough to remain in time. by the way, this is a wonderfull version.

  • Interesting you mentioned The Zombies here, friend. Colin Blunstone went on to work with Alan Parsons (hear his distinctive vocals on 'Pyramid'), as did Allan Clarke. Talent attracts Talent!

  • What's not to love? Live too, I'm sure. Yummy Allan really seems to be enjoying the experience, and they can certainly hold their own with the orchestra. Amazing post! Thank you.

  • wow never hear dthis one. It has a early 50's swing feel as well as the way they are dressed. Never get tiredof hearing Allan sing!

  • One of the true greats of the UK`s group scene of the 60`s & today !!!,.ktf.

  • The Hollies are still touring and still sound great! I have had the pleasure of seeing them in concert a couple of years ago.

  • Great Hollies tune 5***** thanks for sharing!!!

    Peace

    Dave

  • Beatles kicked hollies ass!!

who the fuck are the hollies?

    wow

i bet 90% of every1 has never heard of the "hollies"

they didn't pass the test of time but the BEATLES did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gee tg2258 You talk a lot of rubbish :)

  • The Hollies are rock group from Manchester, England, whose video you happened to be commenting on, so you must know who they are, too, or you wouldn't be here. People who like sixties music know and like the Hollies, and their music has also stood the test of time like the Beatles' has.

  • There was no such as thing as being better or worse than the Beatles. Each band was unique in their own way and had talented in their own right. To say who wasn't better than the Beatles shows your ignorance.

  • That is a great YouTube find! Thanks.

  • This is a great version, but not better than the prior versions... a great lounge sounding version though.

  • Now that's showbiz!

  • The Beatles version is very bittersweet and poigant. One of Paul's best covers and it captures the true essence of the lyrics. JMO
