There is no excuse in this day in age, to not utilize our all-powerful technology to make it safer, more secure, and verifiable when we vote.
I've been saying it for a long time - create a PAPER RECEIPT (Diebold at least gives you those on bank ATMs they make) with a MD5 checksum that enumerates your votes. Plug the checksum into any number of possible 3rd party vote verification secure websites, and make your own polls.
It makes perfect sense. Common sense at that. When you think about how easy it would be to do this, it brings up the question of why they didn't do so in the first place.
Personally, I think we should use both hand counts & the machine together. So when we do the hand count it could be compared to the Diebold number.
I think for now that would be good, although voting machines are trying to eliminate a lot of extra manual work. For now, yes - we need a good, verifiable balance involving the old and new method. In time, there is no reason to rely solely on electronic machines, which create an inforgeable checksum to verify on any non-governmentally controlled webservers, which can tally their own votes. It should be encouraged to verify this - we're essentially verifying our freedom and democracy!

Knowing those machines are "hackable" is one part of favoring hand-counted ballots.
What I'm really stressing here is the other fact ...

I was out today and spoke to about 30 people. Only one person knew about this, because the media puts another spin, and ignores the hacked machines.
