It's possible to safely drive a car in more or less any conditions if you plan ahead and think about what you're doing, but alot of people refuse to take responsibility for their own actions and mistakes and have to blame everyone else. How exactly do you prepare an entire road network for a sudden nationwide blizzard?
It's weird to think that most american cars have automatics... Here in Europe most are manual transmission and on those kind of surfaces is nice to use engine break... It really works.
This year we had a bad winter storm in Texas. I was working and had to deliver a Mercury Grand Marquis to Abilene. Me and my buddy had to deliver the car while I followed him in a Chrysler Sebring. My buddy spun out about 3 times and everytime I had to get him out, I never once spun out or got close to losing control. We had to go over alot of big hills with ice on the road that was about 3in thick. Took up 7hrs to drive to a city that normally takes 2 1/2. We didn't make it back home till 1am
I just don't get it, why people drive this fast on icy conditions? I don't feel sorry for these insane drivers, they are just stupid. Maybe next time, they'll adjust their speed for the conditions.
If you don't feel like you can handle the condition in a car, walk if you can... but please for all that is good. don't walk on the road just go in the snow and tough it out you not the only one in the snow and ice..

Why stand at the bottom of a hill where all the cars are piling up and watch more drivers slide into your cars? Why not go to the top and flag drivers down that there is already a pile of cars down there and tell them to slow down?

@TrueXile420 turning and braking is bad in icey conditions at ANY speed, try turning and braking at the same time on ice, nothing will happen your front wheels will no longer turn because they are sideways and you'll go straight, that's how I put my dads van in a ditch a few years ago, and it was a newer van with ABS
@TrueXile420 I live in Winnipeg so I know all about driving in snow and yes I know reading and doing are two different things, yes I agree ABS is good for beginner drivers but in ideal conditions they most definitely do not stop sooner, ABS brakes pulsate rapidly, so if you hammer down the wheels will never lock up, with normal brakes if you use threashold braking you can put more pressure on the rotor than abs because the abs is sensitive and will activate long before the wheels would lock up
come to Norway and drive peoples, here we have to take a ice test on a close track to show that wee can Handel the car in the winter time. #1 breake #2 let go of the break #3 steer the car #4 break #5 let go of the break #6 steer the car #brake until you are away from the obstacle in front, of you if you do this right you can drive through several obstacle

Slowing down doesn't always help prevent accidents nor does ABS given the right circumstances. Just staying home and having everything you need before the storm hits is the best way to avoid trouble.

If you're driving and you encounter ice, slamming on your brakes will not make you stop sooner, press the brake until just before they lock up, if the wheels lock up, let go and press again. This is called threashold braking, and it will most likely prevent you from destroying your vehicle like the idiots in this video.
@Ebaum744 Paying attention helps too ... lol, seems like a few of these people are day dreamin and not payin attention to their mirrors. Great comment though, your absolutley right about threashold braking. Its how you prepare for a stop (or brake) in the winter. It saved me from hittin a stupid driver today!
@TrueXile420 ABS is one of the worst things created, it doesn't help you stop any sooner, read some of my other comments on how to properly stop, threashold braking and knowing your surroundings. ABS makes you stop farther and allows you to steer while you brake, although if you steer you shouldn't brake because it WILL cause you to skid and slide. And ABS is fairly new, I'm not a fan of new vehicles, I drive a 1962 Ford Galaxie with manual drum brakes and an 88 GMC with power brakes, no ABS
@Ebaum744 What im saying is that in a new car it's hard to threshold break because of the ABS, most drivers unfamiliar with driving in snowy conditions will have a harder time trying to do that then if they just let there ABS do the work for them. I live Canada and driving in snow is very common around here. ABS will help you stop sooner in proper conditions (dry asphalt). People need to experience driving/breaking in these conditions first hand, reading and doing are much different
@Ebaum744 Also if your driving in bad conditions, breaking and turning shouldn't effect anything as long as your wheels don't lock up, its high speed breaking while turning that will cause you to skid and slide do to the weight transfer of the vehicle. At low speeds this shouldn't be an issue. Trust me try hitting your breaks while turning at speeds 100mph+ is where that advise becomes more viable.
@Ebaum744 and to add to this if your vehicle is equipped with antilock brakes just hold the pedal down if you pump the brakes you will screw up the ABS and cause your vehicle to skid.

**NOTE TO ALL DRIVERS EVERYWHERE**
If you're driving and you encounter ice, slamming on your brakes will not make you stop sooner, press the brake until just before they lock up, if the wheels lock up, let go and press again. This is called threashold braking, and it will most likely prevent you from destroying your vehicle like the idiots in this video.

Great comment though, your absolutley right about threashold braking. Its how you prepare for a stop (or brake) in the winter. It saved me from hittin a stupid driver today!

@TrueXile420 ABS is one of the worst things created, it doesn't help you stop any sooner, read some of my other comments on how to properly stop, threashold braking and knowing your surroundings. ABS makes you stop farther and allows you to steer while you brake, although if you steer you shouldn't brake because it WILL cause you to skid and slide. And ABS is fairly new, I'm not a fan of new vehicles, I drive a 1962 Ford Galaxie with manual drum brakes and an 88 GMC with power brakes, no ABS

@Ebaum744 What im saying is that in a new car it's hard to threshold break because of the ABS, most drivers unfamiliar with driving in snowy conditions will have a harder time trying to do that then if they just let there ABS do the work for them. I live Canada and driving in snow is very common around here. ABS will help you stop sooner in proper conditions (dry asphalt). People need to experience driving/breaking in these conditions first hand, reading and doing are much different

@Ebaum744 Also if your driving in bad conditions, breaking and turning shouldn't effect anything as long as your wheels don't lock up, its high speed breaking while turning that will cause you to skid and slide do to the weight transfer of the vehicle. At low speeds this shouldn't be an issue. Trust me try hitting your breaks while turning at speeds 100mph+ is where that advise becomes more viable.

@Ebaum744 and to add to this if your vehicle is equipped with antilock brakes just hold the pedal down if you pump the brakes you will screw up the ABS and cause your vehicle to skid.

And yes I have done dumber shit that this but that was my own fault, case in point the only time I've crashed/gone in a ditch was twice because I tried drifting in my POS '93 shadow at the time, and my dads van at the time an '01 Caravan, and yea I take responsibility, but I've never screwed up driving as badly as these people and I've seen my bad weather

Yeah but it only works when your ABS is off. It's better to slow down using gear reduction. That is if you have a stick.
