@marsleviathan Look up the ol Roland TB-303 and you will know. Usually there was some pre-compression in the recording stage sometimes post. Early on a lot of tracks were recorded dry 303 and sometimes reverb would be used on the drums. Later on reverb was used almost exclusively. Then in the 90's delay and distortion was used. The squelching comes from the 303 and what's called filter resonance.

I have a friend that lost his mind when he was shokingly awaken on Acid. Had to learn how to write, be taught who was his family, and how to potty train all over again!
