Trust me, i know about Strauss, but his ideals weren't communistic, on the contrary, he believed that liberalism had taken religious morals away from the country, and it needed to be re-fashioned by a cultural elite in his image of morality. This is, more or less, a stern federalist interpretation. Communism is the secular empowerment of he masses where federalism is empowerment of a cultural elite to make all decisions (it was the federalists who opposed non-landowners voting).

It seems to me that everyone has their personal political heroes (Marx is one of mine), and, therefore, wants to pile all the blame for the world's problems on those people's political enemies (as i often do with capitalism), but such sentiments are counter-productive, and i would caution you against calling anyone who promotes a strong federal government a communist (the manifesto is STRONGLY against dictatorship, but that message has been lost in the sands of history)
