The goalkeeper does count as a defender, 2 players between ball & goal ... other than that better than salt and pepper shakers!

@dand1977 @dand1977 thanks to this I had an american friend come crying to me saying an offside goal was scored against his team and he based it on THIS explaination. the opposing team was attacking and the attacker with the ball was supported by another and 1 attacker ran up to thre by-line and passed it back to his attacker to score. He failed to realise that you cannot be offside if you're behind the ball. Add that & save Yankie brains!

As i said when the ball is played, its only a basic assumption anyway so that dummies can understand the basics.
