warren and robin were both great players,Id love to see him do something like and instrumental record, ratts songs are just so stupid if they just dumped the lead singer they would have been great
No one told Vito Bratta to stop playing...Warren still tours and makes music. I don't like it when talented people let their talents go to waste!............Joey Tempest............Hello....Where are you?
Warren was my all-time-favorite guitarist of the 80's, aside from George Lynch. These two virtuosos played clean, clear and rarely missed a note. Perefectionists, despite the distortion pedals. I still own a VHS cassette from RATT's original days where Warren was the quiet, shy kid on the tour. On stage, though, he was THE man.
I agree to RATT being under rated, they are very talented and their style has been mixed up with other bands like Poison who are full of glam yet their talents are limited.
They always treated me like shit for wearing a Ratt shirt after wearing a Maiden or Metalica shirt. But Fucking Ratt was quality. Good Riffs and leads. Warren and Robin were the shit. Screw those haters. The big hair was a bit weak though.
@CyValkarion yup, charvel's fucking rule i'm more a jackson guy but lets not fotrget that they were pretty much the same company back then, but charvel's are the best hard rock/heavy metal guitars (you can play lots of other things with them)
Oh by the way -it's all 100% in the fingers and the mind. But the mind has to be fit and relentlessly search for truth and purity. It can be a miserable ,lonely existence indeed and no-one will ever understand why we do it. If you aren't going to be honest to you then you will be less likely to learn anything from any experience. The sad fact is that anyone can pick up a guitar and play it .Should perhaps be a law about this. The George amendment -if you play like him we'll chop yer hands off
I will add that a well set up strat with a floyd ,medium frets and real PAFs, a JTM45 with Mullards and Svetlanas through a greenback 1960a cab and you could be GOD.
Use 11's and detune to D as well and you could even be me.
To fuck it up just add a tube-screamer, jumbo-frets,quarterpounders or SDHPs. Light picks, light strings, lo-action ,make-up ,long hair and drugs. Then do a deal with a crap amp maker like randall -using their practice-amp live miked-up behind your 16 dummy cabinets.
Warren however is the only one of the bunch that actually has tone - in spades.
Unfortunately he starts solos with a blistering pace and somewhere in the middle goes into half-time. Always kills it for me -stone dead.
His still remains one of the best recorded guitar-tones of any hair-band. More soulful than EVH and more bluesy than Clapton. His use of the major 3rd is fucking sublime and his 6ths make me shiver. This is rubbish after hearing his best work.
George Lynch had no sound. It was all pre-amp or fuzzbox -wouldn't matter what you put through it. As for this "limited" gear-base shit -well guy they were all fucking clones -that's why they sound the same. Humbucker-tube screamer-amp. Oh that's funny isn't that the stuff Steve Vai and Malmsteen used. All the gear of any guitarist that went before them was available-there has been no new design of pick-up/amp technology since the JTM45 unless you count modelling.
Anyone remember the story George told in an interview about how, Warren having a particular amp that sounded so amazing, that he kept trying to buy it off of Warren but he wouldn't sell it- So George said (jokingly I'm sure) that he tried to steal it but could never get it-LOL! IMO I hear a LOT of similarities in George and Warren, one of those similarities being that, even when the guitars are screaming on the brink of feedback, you can still hear the tone and note very clearly.
Man I miss the 70s/ 80s. All of these Guys were so inspirational, From Jake E Lee, to Lynch. They woke up the Guitar generation, but you gotta give a bow to the Man who re invented it all. Mr Edward Van Halen
LOVE Warren!...I saw him once on the Invasion of your Privacy tour back in about 1987 and he was so not sober that he had to be carried onto stage...he stood in one place the entire show and played perfectly..I was amazed
imo Warren is one of the most underrated guitarists in all of metal. His guitar work in Ratt never got the credit it really deserves because they are considered a hair band. The difference between Ratt and the other bands in my eyes is that they not only wrote catchy songs but were talented musicians. Its unfair to compare a band like Ratt to Poison for example. The talent level was night and day.
@310stanger Good guitarist stuck in a lame band. Doesn't matter how talented the musicians are in the band when their music's lame it doesn't matter. Steely Dan, Dream Theater, and Symphony X all have scores of talented musicians but lack in the song writing ability. The Hold Steady aren't exactly virtuosos by any means but they make some pretty cool songs.
@HurricaneTBag WTF are you talking about? Ratt were (and are) a great band. Awesome tunes. Very melodic, catchy and original. All the dudes n the band were vital to their sound. Getting a great band together isnt as easy as getting a bunch of virtuoso musicians together. Bands like Ratt, Dokken and the like had the right people on the right instruments who all contributed something special to the music. It's not science, it's magic.
@believer06 Outside of Round and Round I can't think of a single Ratt song that I like. Outside of MSG and Racer X I don't really think the 80s shred-rock stuff was every really done all that well.
@HurricaneTBag So you didnt like "Nobody rides for free" "Lay it down" "Back for more" "Wanted Man" "Lack of communication".... Well, that says more about you than 80's Metal
@believer06 Nope. I liked real 80s Metal tunes like Battery, Raining Blood, In My Darkest Hour, Madhouse, Into the Pit, and others. None of this Gay LA Metal stuff.
@HurricaneTBag Since youre not a fan of Ratt, why are you here on this video? Certainly spending alot of time on something you dislike so much. My friend's cousin is Charlie Benanti BTW
@believer06 I like Warren De Martini, think he's a good player just that his band sucks. Good musicians can make bad music. Charlie Benati, or Charlie Benante the drummer from Anthrax? I met Charlie at LaGuardia after The Big Four show, I was we were on the same flight to Chicago, I just mentioned to him that they rocked at Yankee Stadium...he was with his wife and daughter so I didn't want to bug him. Beautiful family and a great drummer.
@HurricaneTBag Drummer from Anthrax.Bad spelling on my part. I never met him. His cousin moved here (near Chicago) in the early 80s. Met him thru my bass player. Really nice guy as well. He plays drums as well, but not as good as his cousin unfortunately. Anyway, I dig hair metal as well as thrash. Really melodic. Very fun to solo over. When it's too complex, many tend to become too repetitive.
@HurricaneTBag i think this is the dumbest thing ive EVER read...its great to see your musical diversity knowing steely dan from dream theater, however lacking in song writting?..WTF lol..funny
@flosscal1 Steely Dan was probably unfair to put there, they've had some pretty cool songs that can grip a wide variety of audiences. I like Dream Theater, but can they write a song that's four minutes long and hooks the listener? No. You have to like eleven minute songs with eighty different time changes in order to like Dream Theater. No one's ever going to say "Hey throw some Dream Theater on the juke box" at a bar or anything.
Warren rocks - I always thought his style was a mix of Joe Perry and EVH - blues based licks with smooth legato. And he played with great feel, not just flash... one of the best of the 80s
DeMartini is amazing!.........What a cool solo & video.............I love how he warms up & then when it's time to give it another run through he just tears it up......I love watching a player w/ this kind of talent & drive........Does anyone know what song this is? I need to go buy it from i-tunes........Peace! X-Mann
Oh & post more videos like this one......Pleace......
@bradski01 Yup....I saw that right after I posted my comments & yes the whole album ROCKS......Great stuff.......I was amazed at how much I like it........The tune "Scatter" is da bomb for me.......Peace! X-Mann
ok forget what i wrote yesterday, i heard the on the official ratt website and the solo was different BUT i got me copy of the album TODAY (i know i can't believe it either) and the solo i just the same as in the vid
LOVE Warren DeMartini's playing. I get so sick of all the MAB Speed makes someone great crap - WARREN is the man when it comes to unique phrasing and solo structure. The guy never plays a bad lead. He and Dweezil are probably my favs.
Warren is cool. I would love to write some songs with him.
His licks are tasty and he comes with no emotional baggage crap like many other musicians.
Had a great time back in the 80's seeing him play live in RATT and watching their videos one by one being released on MTV when it truely was MTV and not this shit-ola they produce to "entertain" us nowadays.
Ah yes, Vito Bratta. Another un-appreciated guitarist. I listened to You're In Trouble about 10 times last night, and could help to think how far ahead of times that solo was. Warren was blazing out those kind of solos 3-5 years ahead of when it became vogue to play those kind of solos.
@rapidtranq Vito was a complete moron, he destroyed his left hand by trying to play classical guitar while laying in bed---his words, from Guitar World. Too much strain on the wrist.
With all of the hype over George Lynch, John Petrucci, nad those types (and I'm not saying they aren't excellent players), I don't think Warren has ever been truly appreciated for the guitar virtuoso that he really is. What's even more impressive is that Warren achieves virtuosity without the use of the flashy stuff like 2 hand tapping, excessive pinch harmonics, and excessive trem bar dive bombing.
I'm sure he does it quite well, as good of a player as he is. My point is, that Warren doesn't rely on it as heavily, if at all, the way many other players do, yet Warren's solos and licks are just as good as those players that do rely heavily on the use of tapping, which only goes to strengthen the credibility of Warren's playing.
@dman72 Yeah he's great I do love those tapping licks he does on In Your Direction and Wanted Man. Clearly he was ripped off by Reb Beach another great player. Hell I'm a tapper myself its a useful technique
i just wish warren would rip out the solos like he did on out of the cellar he just plays to many blues riffs hes still awesome i want to see him shred!
Warren is a great songwriter and guitarist. Big fan of Carlos and Bobby. Stephen, vocals sound killer. I wish these guys the best of luck on their new album. Just listening to the first song out - Best of me - this outta hit the charts.
this album is going to kick ass badly, the only worry i have is pearcy's voice as it has seriously warn out since there last album but judging from his recent solo album he should hopefully sound alright =)
I agree. But the song in the video( Lost Weekend) is what I am really excited to hear. It has that classic ratt sound to it, which is what they were aiming for. Would of been nice to see Juan back on board, but Robbie Crane is good for me. :)
yer man im really looking forward to lost weekend aswell it kinda reminds of cant wait on love from detonator for some reason lol i would give anything for juan to come back but i dont blame him with all the crap that happened in the past, you could say "unresolved issues"
i dont know how anyone can compare lynch and warren, lynch is great so is warren one of the most underrated guitarists of all time IMO i dont think they sound anything alike
@thecaiman Bang on, the only thing similar is their vibrato technique. They both do the jackin off technique and they both do it very well. Although I'd say neither have as good vibrato as Jake E Lee. DeMartinis playing is stunning though, don't get me wrong, as is Lynch's but there is something about DeMartini that has me hitting the roof :P
@thecaiman well both are the only ones Ive ever seen use vertical vibrato. Not sure who picked it up of of who. You can see them use it in the Round and Round and It's not love videos. Someone told me a while back that Warren tutored Lynch when he was gonna audition for Ozzy when RR died. Havent found anything about that on the internet tho. In any case, both Lynch and Warren are great in their own right and a re quite ditinctive. But do sound similar in some respects.
Many of the 80's metal guitarist have a similiar vibe and style, it's just the nature of music. To sell albums, the talented bands gave there fan base what they wanted, THATS how you become successful. Plus, they didn't have near the choice of hardware we do now. It was pretty much Marshall, Peavy, Gibson, Charvell, Kramer and Fender. Most used the Tube Screamer and Boss disortion. Using a limited gear base gives them all a similiar sound. I LOVE IT ALL!
@smacman68 Lynch once said 50% of his sound comes from his gear and 50% come from his hands. Rock guitarist in the 80s were the best of the best. So much better than anything which followed in the 90s onward. I learned SOO much from Warren, Lynch and the like way back then.
@believer06 Truer words have never been spoken my friend. EVH basically says the same thing. I once took a guitar in to trade in because I didn't like the sound. The salesman at Guitar Center played it and it sounded awesome. I was like "how the fuck did you make it sound like that?!!" He said the same thing. I ended up keeping it and today it's my main baby. THanks for the feedback!
I'm sure they will. What scares me is Stephen. I heard those vids of the Anaheim show earlier this month and his singing sucks really bad. Lets see what comes out of this.
Yep that is what is so great about it! Alot of other old bands are starting to adapt to a modern sound, but RATT is keeping it old school with cool riffs, good solos, and awesome tone!
Saw them play this past summer. They did the whole out of the cellar disc live. was awesome. Looking forward to the new INFESTATION this next summer.Freakin awesome!! Ratt'n'Roll
The best player. A lovely blend of blues and flash. articulate but soulful.

@rapidtranq i saw a live concert of white lion, vito bratta was a big disappointment, he sounds great on record, not the same live though

The thing about Warren is his unique note selection. He's not just running scales. His solos are tailored to blend seamlessly with the song.
garciare1 1 year ago 2
With all of the hype over George Lynch, John Petrucci, nad those types (and I'm not saying they aren't excellent players), I don't think Warren has ever been truly appreciated for the guitar virtuoso that he really is. What's even more impressive is that Warren achieves virtuosity without the use of the flashy stuff like 2 hand tapping, excessive pinch harmonics, and excessive trem bar dive bombing.
dman72 1 year ago 2
@dman72 Warren Demartine taps like a motherfucker.
snakekramer 1 year ago
@snakekramer
I'm sure he does it quite well, as good of a player as he is. My point is, that Warren doesn't rely on it as heavily, if at all, the way many other players do, yet Warren's solos and licks are just as good as those players that do rely heavily on the use of tapping, which only goes to strengthen the credibility of Warren's playing.
dman72 1 year ago
@dman72 Yeah he's great I do love those tapping licks he does on In Your Direction and Wanted Man. Clearly he was ripped off by Reb Beach another great player. Hell I'm a tapper myself its a useful technique

This will be the year of the RATT

this album is going to kick ass badly, the only worry i have is pearcy's voice as it has seriously warn out since there last album but judging from his recent solo album he should hopefully sound alright =)
thrashmetalowns666 2 years ago
The single Best of Me is out now. Check it out on their myspace. I think Pearcy is good to go.
colonyvice 2 years ago
just listened to it, this album is gonna be awesome, best of me is just a slight taste to come judging by warrens solo XD
thrashmetalowns666 2 years ago
I agree. But the song in the video( Lost Weekend) is what I am really excited to hear. It has that classic ratt sound to it, which is what they were aiming for. Would of been nice to see Juan back on board, but Robbie Crane is good for me. :)
colonyvice 2 years ago
yer man im really looking forward to lost weekend aswell it kinda reminds of cant wait on love from detonator for some reason lol i would give anything for juan to come back but i dont blame him with all the crap that happened in the past, you could say "unresolved issues"

did u check out their new single "best of me"??? his voice still sounds DAMN good! :) this album is gonna ROCK!

i dont know how anyone can compare lynch and warren, lynch is great so is warren one of the most underrated guitarists of all time IMO i dont think they sound anything alike
thecaiman 2 years ago 24
IMO....Me either!
d45611 2 years ago 4
@d45611 Their styles have definite similarities. Obviously, their tone is not the same...
Thirdgen83 1 year ago
I think they do a little bit,
rfd73 1 year ago
@thecaiman Bang on, the only thing similar is their vibrato technique. They both do the jackin off technique and they both do it very well. Although I'd say neither have as good vibrato as Jake E Lee. DeMartinis playing is stunning though, don't get me wrong, as is Lynch's but there is something about DeMartini that has me hitting the roof :P
skezza 1 year ago
@thecaiman
They're alike in that they both have very unique senses of melody.
HeavyMetalNoize 1 year ago
@thecaiman I can hear it, vibrato and phrasing. I think warren burns harder than Lynch, ahhhh, they both rock...CC Deville Forever!!!
DougFCKNSteele 1 year ago
@thecaiman well both are the only ones Ive ever seen use vertical vibrato. Not sure who picked it up of of who. You can see them use it in the Round and Round and It's not love videos. Someone told me a while back that Warren tutored Lynch when he was gonna audition for Ozzy when RR died. Havent found anything about that on the internet tho. In any case, both Lynch and Warren are great in their own right and a re quite ditinctive. But do sound similar in some respects.
believer06 1 year ago
@believer06 Yeah Schenker, Lynch, and the Demartini in a G3!!!

Fuck comparing them.
Put George Lynch, Warren DeMartini and Reb Beach on a tour together.
Now that would be fucking sikkening

Many of the 80's metal guitarist have a similiar vibe and style, it's just the nature of music. To sell albums, the talented bands gave there fan base what they wanted, THATS how you become successful. Plus, they didn't have near the choice of hardware we do now. It was pretty much Marshall, Peavy, Gibson, Charvell, Kramer and Fender. Most used the Tube Screamer and Boss disortion. Using a limited gear base gives them all a similiar sound. I LOVE IT ALL!
smacman68 1 year ago 2
@smacman68 Lynch once said 50% of his sound comes from his gear and 50% come from his hands. Rock guitarist in the 80s were the best of the best. So much better than anything which followed in the 90s onward. I learned SOO much from Warren, Lynch and the like way back then.
believer06 1 year ago
@believer06 Truer words have never been spoken my friend. EVH basically says the same thing. I once took a guitar in to trade in because I didn't like the sound. The salesman at Guitar Center played it and it sounded awesome. I was like "how the fuck did you make it sound like that?!!" He said the same thing. I ended up keeping it and today it's my main baby. THanks for the feedback!
smacman68 1 year ago
@thecaiman They don't sound alike......but man....they are both amazing melodic players!
