Stupid camera work. Tain rips up a solo from 5.30 and the camera spends most of it focused on kenny garrett playing the the same 5 note phrase or Tain's back....idiocy, I tell you it's idiocy! I want to see Tain solo you fool!!
Well--Miles said that along with Bird, Kenny was the most harmonically advanced alto he ever played with. I mean, shit--need anything else for a reference?? There's a lot of badass cats out there--too many to count--but kenny is, at least, a king.
Coltrane and Elvin = more authentic and played this way for honest reasons. Unless this is some kind of tribute, why bother? Copying famous styles is not creative. It's just copying.
"King" of what? King of jazz? King of the saxophone. Please. You better check out some of the other bad asses in NY who REALLY play the horn without all that hysterical body movement. Check out Wes Anderson, Vincent Herring, Eric Alexander, Antonio Hart.
Please read my post again. I didn't knock him. I simply stated that there are many others who play on a high level and no one is "king". Wayne Krantz is a great player also. So is Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mike Stern, John Scofield, and many others. This idea that someone "rules" needs to be put to rest.
LORD,this guy is really sick, love his style,i think am going to agree that he's the present king of ALTO SAX...Charly PARKER is gone,so he's present king of ALTO
No one is the "king". This is a ridiculous and irresponsible statement. It is disrespectful to all the other fine alto saxophone players on the scene, and there are a great many. Go to New York and you can hear dozens play on this level every day.
And if every alto player at Berklee sounds like him, then Jazz is doomed. The music was built on personalities and identities. Not one sound dominating the scene. Ben Webster didn't sound like Lester Young, who also didn't sound like Coleman Hawkins. It's important to remember that.
Also, I'm not here to argue. So please keep the insults and awful remarks to yourselves. I'm open to everyone's opinion.
oh my god! thank you so much for this video, if you have the other songs from this concert I would love to see them again. the user 'itsartolie' used to have everything up but his account has since been suspended. This is probably one of the greatest concerts I have seen on video. R.I.P. Kenny Kirkland

I would love to see James Carter and Kenny Garrett playing on the same bandstand...just the energy alone would be ridiculous.

Cool how Kenny "comps" for Tain on his Giant Steps solo. Great footage-clean and nice edits.

I understand your point, but I don't think there are dozens who play like Kenny anywhere.

willyager, you obviously have never been to Berklee in Boston or hung out in NY. or anywhere where there are lots of young alto players
