Concrete-and-Masonry-Wall-Anchors: How To Install

... I have small anchors, but I can only drill holes big enough for half of them to fit in. My jaw dropped open when I saw how easy it was for you to drill a hole with the hammer drill. I just have a regular drill. I can't afford to buy a hammer drill for just this one project - they are quite expensive it seems. Why is it so hard for me to drill with my regular drill? How long should it take for each hole? Please help - I'm going beserk!!!

I've been going crazy trying to drill holes into my basement wall - this is an apartment wall - I have a duplex and the bottom floor is in the basement of the building. So I don't know if it's concrete or brick or 5000 year old impenetrable stone, but I've been drilling and drilling and drilling and getting no-where. (The first little bit is drywall or whatever so it's easy to get through.) (to be ctd...)
