Compassion for animals is common among all religions. Not just the Vedic religion. St Francis of Assisi was the most famous one, he considered all animals and birds as his brothers.

Vegetarianism goes beyond sectarian religion. It is not just being a Hindu, Muslim or a Christian that matters. Rather it is the basic principle of compassion. Killing animals is violent and cruel. How can you klll the animals who are your brothers and claim that you love God? It is like saying that it is ok to kill my weaker brother because he is of no use to me or maybe because he is just weak enough not to be able to protest my killing. Because after all the animals are also created by God.

The word religious has nothing to do with what ones beliefs really are. One person's beliefs of doing something good is another persons belief of doing evil. So a person being "religious" does not mean that they believe as you do.

In fact, different religions have many conflicting beliefs, which cause many problems. So should we be an Atheist? No that is still a conflicting belief system, a religion if you will.

So should everyone in the world stop eating cows? I don't believe so.

If I believed as you, I could see how this is disturbing, but as a Christian, there is nothing in my beliefs that tells me to not eat a cow or a chicken. If I am eating with a Hindu friend, I try to be sensitive to their feelings with in reason. On the other hand, when I was in Nepal, I saw a Hindu priest sacrifice a goat to Nandi, a statue or idol of a bull. They also slaughtered 108 water buffalo to an idol of Shiva every year. (It was 108 people before the 50s.) I could have been offended.

Actually dairy cattle are killed as soon as they don't give the right amount of milk. The bulls are all killed. So called "Beef" cows also give milk, I've tasted it.
