  • You are absolutely WRONG WRONG WRONG.

LAY takes an object: "I lay the sweater on my bed."

LIE does not take an object: "The sweater is lying on my bed."

    END OF STORY.

  • Sorry, but this video breaks its own rules. At the beginning of the video, it correctly says that 'la' is transitive and 'lie' is intransitive. But by the end of the video it is saying that 'the books are laying on the table' (intransitive) is correct, which most authorities do not accept (see Merriam-Webster). And that lie is for people and lay is for things - which is a new one to me -where did that come from?.

  • So how about the song Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol with the lyrics 'If I lay here, if I just lay here, would you lie with me..'??

  • @LovingSounds - Snow Patrol's lyrics are perfectly correct - this line is like Second Conditional, and so correctly uses the Past Simple of 'lie' - 'lay' - in the 'if' part, and 'would' in the other part.

  • @RandomIdeaEnglish thanks for explaining!

  • Another good one. This is one of the rules that makes S&W useful for me.

  • I make this mistake quite often. I think that this video related to me the most because of this. I also like humor here. I feel like all of the videos everyone did had a nice balance of humor and professionalism.

  • Great video! It's very professional. I also use lay more than lie, but now I know when I'm correct and when I'm not:)

  • Excellent! Your video was infromative and entertaining. Great job writing, editing, and acting.

  • Good Job Everyone. The video was cute, and I think that I use the wrong word all the time. I use lay all the time. I will think more about it now. :-)
