Originally, Cortana was suppose to betray Chief at the beginning of the level that would become Two Betrayal in Halo: Combat Evolved. I wonder if these were written before or after they made that change in the plot.
Regardless, I could rabble for a long time about my own speculation on this. Though, I will say there is a sixth Cortana letter, though it was found on Bungie's Myth CD. It's easy to look up if anyone wants to read it.

I think that it is the Gravemind speaking through Cortana, becuase we dont know what exactly happened in Halo 3. Hes explaining that The Flood was created by the Forerunners, in a form of a super weapon. I think that it is the Gravemind speaking through Cortana, becuase we dont know what exactly happened in Halo 3. Hes explaining that The Flood was created by the Forerunners, in a form of a super weapon. The Gravemind tells how he is different becuase he expeirences human like feelings, tieing back to the 2nd letter about freinds and what not. The only way the flood can be destroyed is obliviously starving them, which means destroying anything that can basically be a host to the Parasite.

i that cortana is an entity that has seen the past and know the future. Some sort of all knowing prophet. She has taken settlement in the mind of Master chief and is using his body to get revenge or to fulfill a prophecy. I think that by talking to master chief she can control what he does. Almost like the ending twist to the game bioshock. This guess could be completely inaccurate.

Actually, the three beasts are from the book of Revelations. The Da Vinci code was written sometime 2003. The letters were written in 99', way before our time.

When the letter mentions a poet named Eliot it's reffering to one of his poems when he states "This is the way the world ends not with a bang, but with a whimper..." and the letter states he had it wrong so if it wont end with a whimper what will it end with?

i have theorized that gravemind is a interdeminsional being because if halo 2 in one part he says he has listened through time/space metal/rock and all that so he can predict and see what will happen in the future even his own death even if it isn't his death because in halo 3 he "died" but if he can space travel then that can be a future gravemind in the past leaving "another" gravemind out there so the flood still exist.

If you look on wikipedia, Bungie hs stated the letter's were written when the game was under development and Cortana's personality has changed since the time of the letter's.

also dont u find it weird that she says the SUNS are shining and also when someone is acting weird they say i get weird signals not weird transmitions. also when she says a black sun and yet shining isnt that an eclypse? and a halo at the right angle emits light and looks like an eclipse?black sun. My mind can crack puzzles easily so these letters r a challenge 2 me and i think ive nearly got it, I've looked into it more. She says "I have seen countless empires BREAK before me". so dont think thats to do with the flood, because the flood dont break armies they posses them.But the elites control other races e.g. the brutes and grunts but they dont really like eachother so they BREAK into factions like the heratics and so on. And the elites have been round 4 a vry long time thats my outlook.
