That would be my first guess too. But the question you have to ask yourself is, who are we to define X. Perhaps that is what the cause of the conflict was. We took sides, and defined people as blue, red, or -1 +/- i. Keep that in mind. :)

x's definition is implicit in the implicit definition of the problem: "Find the value(s) of x that make the equation a true statement."
