Simply sublime. One of my favourite songs done by a man who was top of his game. His guitar is weeping, not one note out of place. Great voice, ladies and gentlemen here is everything you need to learn about being a blues guitarist.
If it is true that 'less is more' then Peter Green typifies it, the gaps he leaves just turn me to water. It is almost like he knows me. I will go to my grave with this and Clapton
Totally agree Rob...My Fav blues guitarist of all time...no telling what he could have achieved if he had kept playing through those "crazy " years...!!..
Fascinating to hear how Peter developed and refined this blues into the most perfect love song I've ever heard. Would love to hear all the takes someday - and to ask why the record company added strings when they could have used the excellent but under-recorded organist here.
@zthetha Hi! It seems fate has drawn us together yet again! *wink* Beautiful tune and guitar playing but doesn't your perfect love song sound a touch codependant?!! You wouldn't want to end up a pathetic drunk, would you?
@clementinemonkey Hi again Clementine! I have been trying to think of a love song that does not sound co-dependent - can't come up with one - and most sound pathologically so - seems to be a characteristic of the genre - and of the 'sickness; as the Romans thought of it.
@zthetha Oh, do please call me Clem....you never know.....this could be the start of a beautiful relationship! Actually Zthetha (what sort of name is that?) I do know someone who is quite good at writing morbid love songs. (Psst....Had a couple written for me fairly recently infact)
Anyhow, being a Man of the World with your obvious intellect and since you also play the guitar (quite alot of them!) can't you find the inspiration to write one yourself?! Don't tell me you haven't tried! ;)
@clementinemonkey Hi Clem - how do you know I play guitar - and have a small collection? (Well, nobody's perfect!) As for the ridiculous name - that's simple - my parents were raving loonies! No - that's not quite right - when I registered with youtube all the versions of my name were taken and after spending hours trying this and that I just hit the keys at random and zthethaI was the first one to be accepted so I guess I'm stuck with it - but you can call me Al.. I write tunes but not songs
@zthetha Ok Al LOL! Then maybe you're my long lost pal? Just don't call me Betty! I was doing some snooping on your channel and it's fairly obvious you're a guitar player who likes to cook (how's the sushi rolls coming along?) and meditate? (George Harrison's spirit hasn't entered your soul maybe?) Btw, how did you come across my Barrymore biography? Do you like him as an Actor or just wanted to find out abit more about him because he was Flynn's idol? Nothing to do with Peter Green I know
Love Peter Green. But does anybody know if Eric Clapton played any Green covers? Are there any recordings of Clapton playing Peter Green tunes? I'd like to hear how Clapton would play them. I'm particularly interested in a cover of "The Stumble" performed by Clapton.
@norjop Well Ive never heard of Clapton playing "The Stumble"...."Hide away" by Freddie King is his bible....but I agree with you...I would like to hear Clapton playing that tune, but then when his days were young.....but some other guys played that tune like Jeff Beck, Gary Moore and of course Freddie King, who wrote it!!!!!
@MrGranousty The "beano" album.....features the instrumentals "Hide away" and "Stepping Out"....but teach me, cos I never heard Clapton play "The Stumble"....
@norjop Just for the record: The Stumble is not a Peter Green tune, but Written and performed by Freddie King. Peters version with Mayall is lousy, despite all the beautiful work he has left us. I prefer Peters "Stumble" with the Splinter Group.
@kayjayscouse I agree. Not only was a masterful blues guitarist he had a superb blues voice. The only one I can think of today who has both talents is Joe Bonamassa.
@Fruscianteistheman Now thats a huge compliment to the master from a "Fruscianteistheman"man..I think youre a man, cos you look like John Lennon...lol...however I couldnt agree more with ye!!!...Look, no one is the best, but Green is better!!!!!!!!!!
I read something that some of the old blues guys preferred Peter Green's soulful playing more than Clapton or Jimi. His playing is so heartfelt it gets to me. It's like listening to Howlin' Wolf or Muddy Waters singing. Beautiful.
@tommart123 Great sentence! Wished I had wrote that. Well done sir! I'mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm feeling the love via Peter Green tonight. Fantastic tribute to MR. Little Willie John!
Back in the 60s at the heighth of the British Blues revival, messages started appearing scrawled on London Tube stations walls reading ' Clapton Is God "
Peter Green was a contemporary and played with the Bluesbreakers also. The 'Clapton is God' grafitti started appearing with a slash through it and the message underneath it read "Green is better than God". This is the guy they were praising.
@vanu49 Cheers mate not that I want to get involved in the best guitarist argument, but (there`s always a but), nobody comes close to "The Green manalishi", for tone , phrasing or ability.
@Mell1888 Yeah...what can I say??...some people say: Its a matter of taste...anyway..Im so grateful that I saw the master at work way back in Rotterdam 1969..maybe I got carried away here...but I wish everyone to have an experience like that..
In the sixties and early seventies it was all this guitar hero malarkey. You know the type of thing,Page is better than Blackmore,Blackmore is better than Trower,Trower is better than Clapton, etc, etc.Well I'm no guitar player, but no other guy I've ever heard can or could get the sound that Peter Green managed, the man can break your heart.Brilliant, for me,does not sum it up.Thanks for sharing.
@vanu49 So right there. Greeny could break your heart or make your day on guitar. If you check out the quotes of B.B.King, he knew how good he was. We thought back then this was the way music was going. Todays stuff we get guitar if we're lucky, but then it's only rhythm. I worked hard to play lead & it's no longer wanted.
when I first saw Fleetwood Mac in 68 it was with Peter Jeremy Spencer John Macvie and Mick Fleetwood when I saw them in 69 they introduced Danny kirwan who played some brilliant solos Peter just let him have the stage and stood back and watched with pride...brilliant
@rogbow69 Hi there...I saw the Mac only once in 1969 in Rotterdam, the 3 guitarist line-up, well that night is in my high lights top ten!!!and indeed..Peter gave Danny the room to move he deserved...
have you ever heard such gorgous guitar playing...i.v seen Fleetwood Mac live in a little blues club in Kidderminster called The Frank Freemans Blues club 1968 and also at the Chateau in Droitwich1969 am i privilaged or what
Just have to add, having been in love with Peter Green's voice and guitar playing since the 60's and 'rediscovering' him in 2010, he also had such impeccable timing, which made it all flow. Except on a rare occasion, I've not heard this combination from other blues musicians. Close, very close, but ... Peter had it all, and I believe that's what makes him so very special. (Just my opinion.)
@BRAIN2EXCURSION Seek out "John Mayer vs. Peter Green" on Youtube.
I'll credit that John Mayer is smart enough to know who Peter Green is/was. He certainly wouldn't give him songwriting credit for his obvious rip-off.
John Mayer knows that Peter Green's arrangement of this song is different, yet still comes from Little Willie John's version of "I Need Your Love So Bad". John Mayer is just a weak impersonator of the idols he respects/trashes. You think John Mayer could pull off any real slow blues? I say no.
@strangeones4 Haha Thanks for the opinion update man, it's good to know there are still a few uneducated musicians out there who still dislike John Mayer because he's young and don't actually realise the amount of talent the man has. He credits Peter BECAUSE the progression is obvious. For any Peter Green fans, they would notice where the progression came from in John Mayer's song and if you actually knew John Mayer's musical abilities from an educated point of view you'd see he's a talented man
@BRAIN2EXCURSION Thanks for the "I live in the now update, and don't know what I'm talking about, because I really don't know the past."
The problem with John Mayer is that he has no soul. He just copies his idols; Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. It wasn't until recently I find out he's tried to copy the guitar style of Peter Green. It wil never happen. John Mayer is a mimic, who lacks soul/heart. If you actually listened to the original guitarists you would know this.
@BRAIN2EXCURSION If you happen to be tight with John Mayer, get him to do a cover version of "Love That Burns". I'd really like to hear that version, because Gary Moore butchered his back in '95. Blues guitar is not that easy to play when the people who play actually care, and have passion for playing it.
Greeny recently stated to Guitar Player magazine: Oh, I was never really a songwriter. I was very lucky to get those hits. I shouldn't have been distracted from my fascination with the blues... I have been known to come up with the odd bit, but I'm not all that wild about the big composer credit.[citation needed] UNBELIEVABLE eh?
Did Eric Clapton ever record "The Stumble" or any other Peter Green covers? I'd love to hear Clapton's version of "The Stumble". Please help me search.
@vanu49 I always thought it was Jeremy Spencer who played keyboards for FM at this time. Other keyboard parts: 'Love that Burns' , 'Sandy Mary' on the 'Live at the BBC' album. Who played them? Jeremy seemed to fill in with other instruments other than guitar. Christine came later, didn't she? Unless you know something I don't!
@jedsonbass73 According 2 the cd info its Nick Pickett as guest on "Sandy Mary"..but its possible that Spencer did some keyboards now and then...and its true Christine came in later but she did some guest appearances before becoming a member...
@vanu49 Thanks for that info. That clarifies a few things. PG has always been renowned for his artistry on the guiitar, but what a great singing voice too! He could wipe the floor with most so-called singers today. Greeny and Friends are in Aberdeen on Wednesday night.
@jedsonbass73 Its so true what ye said about his singing voice...Its not that people dont hear it, but sometimes his great singing voice is overlooked...anyway Its good to know that Peter is enjoying himself doing gigs, however we must listen to him with different ears for quite some time now...
@jedsonbass73 No kidding Peter had that 'blues' voice. Sometimes Jeremy would sing on some of the blues standards, but Peter was it. He also worked at being a harmonica player. Thanks for the song vanu49, it's the best cover of this tune. Also, one of my favorite Petre Green songs.
Among all the great white blues guitarists of the 60's (and there were quite a few) Peter Green was the only one who really understood that the guitar should complement a song, not dominate it. He's still around but all that acid must have taken alot out of him...
great to hear fleetwood mac live in the studio with i need your love so bad, please upload more of fleetwood mac , peter green live in the studio. all in all love it
Hi BIO..Im so fucking agree with you..spread the word around...!!!!and if they dont, fucking brain them, like Peter said in the beginning of this song...lol....
People, the man is playing in my home town (Holmfirth, UK) in two freakin' months time!! Soooo excited!! Not since Pink Floyd have I been so up for this!!!
As a student I saw Mac loads of times, at pubs in their early days, then thru the festival period and even at the Royal Albert Hall. Peter Green was majestic in those days, he wasn't flashy like Alvin Lee, but he didn't have to be. This track shows him as I remember - restrained yet so soulful. Beautiful. Listen to Gary Moore's cd"Greeny" for a pretty good copy
If ever a guitarist knew when not to play it was Pete Green. Often, less is more and he only plays relevant and beautiul phrases. Sings like he was born to it.
Nice to point out that there are different takes, Peter plays different licks until eventually the right one comes out for release. This makes it "from the heart", as opposed to all the music where every note is prescribed.
Love all the takes, even where Peter makes serious mistakes. That's real music for me.
On the Box Set "The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions 1967 - 1969" there are several versions of this wonderful track, including the "USA" version which is substantially different !
From the best album Fleetwood Mac ever did.

Unless you know something I don't!
jedsonbass73 1 year ago
@jedsonbass73 According 2 the cd info its Nick Pickett as guest on "Sandy Mary"..but its possible that Spencer did some keyboards now and then...and its true Christine came in later but she did some guest appearances before becoming a member...

@vanu49 Thanks for that info. That clarifies a few things. PG has always been renowned for his artistry on the guiitar, but what a great singing voice too! He could wipe the floor with most so-called singers today. Greeny and Friends are in Aberdeen on Wednesday night.
jedsonbass73 1 year ago
@jedsonbass73 Its so true what ye said about his singing voice...Its not that people dont hear it, but sometimes his great singing voice is overlooked...anyway Its good to know that Peter is enjoying himself doing gigs, however we must listen to him with different ears for quite some time now...
Have an nice day.

Peter Green rocks.
The Mac rocked. I bought all the records on first release. :¬)

Wow I envy you mikenshoba...I only had the privilege the see the Mac once in Rotterdam.....will never forget, PG was outstanding.

If ever a guitarist knew when not to play it was Pete Green. Often, less is more and he only plays relevant and beautiul phrases. Sings like he was born to it.

Are we being serious here?
sam19851 2 years ago
Nice to point out that there are different takes, Peter plays different licks until eventually the right one comes out for release. This makes it "from the heart", as opposed to all the music where every note is prescribed.
Love all the takes, even where Peter makes serious mistakes. That's real music for me.

Dont worry, its only one note, but youre right. I cant seem to solve the problem.
Any suggestions??
vanu49 3 years ago
How are you recording it?
Tzaosirus7 3 years ago
Yeah lovely delicacy and homage to BB in a way....obviously BB King was highly influential to him, his touch unrivaled.
It's like in the way on ' Mr Wonderful' he went for the Freddie King styles.
