when ever i have visited glasgow the visit was not complete without a visit to see and photograph the class 303 which was an important familiar part of glasgows heritage. you won,t be forgotten the bonnie bonnie class 303.
so when my grandparents used to take me regularly to Helensburgh c'69/'70 from Scotstoun would it have been on one of these? I don't remember much about the trains but I always remember Dumbarton Rock and the whisky factory with the geese
Is anyone aware of what the rather vacant looking of the train under the pantograph is used for? I allways used to wonder that. Maybe it's some sort of engine room or luggage store?
In the days of guards, actual service, The Royal Mail and days out to the beach, you could put your bike in there. Helensburgh received post and newspapers from the blue trains.
Class 303 EMU.....old school....still driving trains as I posted a year ago....but 334,318,314 and class 156 sprinter now.....thats me done 30 year in the industry...
Throught secondary school my mates and I virtually lived on The Cathcart Circle - using these trains every day for school and in the evenings and on weekends for leisure trips.
Thanks for reminding me of the happiest days of my life. We didn't think they were too happy then. But they were - really.
I have been on one of these but I was only young and can remember it vividly. I knew they were very old and for some reason I was pretty scared of them. At that time, you couldn't sit behind the driver but from pictures and what people say, I think it's a great shame they got rid of it. I wish they brought it back...
I have great memories of theese from the early 70's travelling from Springburn to Queen St. My sister and I used to argue over who got to sit at the front behind the driver. The view out of the front window was great.
I spent many a friday, saturday, xmas, birthday & new year down that train station that the transport police got to know me.. then I moved to Pollokshields East.
I, too, have many fond memories of these blue trains during the 1960s and also regularly dogged off with a mate to see how far we could get on recycled tickets. In those days you'll recall, most stations had used ticket boxes at the exits and unclipped tickets dated the same day could be reused with ease.
The Mocha Bar was an Italian restaurant/cafe, which was torn down sometime in the mid-to-late '70's. I used to make a bee-line for the train-set displays at Lewis's toy department. LOL. Great childhood memories.
We used the Blue Train to go to Glasgow pretty well every Saturday back in the '60's when I was a nipper; anybody remember the Mocha Bar right by Queen St. station, and Lewis's department store?
Fantastic Brought Back some great childhood memories of Summer Hols spent in Glasgow Just set me wondering & thinking Does anybody Know what ever became of the Savoy Chain of Café/Restaurants which ere scattered across Glasgow City Centre in the Late 60's Mid 70's ?
In response to past few comments, I would love a medal if I was as reliable and hardworking as a '303' for past 40years. For some it brings back some fond memories, but I guess as you've no brain, memory is something you wouldn't know...
They scrapped them a few years back. Quite right too. Bloody ancient 40 year old units. A bunch off anoraks even held a special last 303 trip to Helensburgh.
she was probably out of sorts. some of the best people i've known in this life had downs. following, i think they were blessed with it rather than sufferers of it.

The next new units they make should be a modern Class 303. Same appearance but more advanced.

More of these old beauties should have been persevered!
and maybe restored to how they originally looked with blue paint, logos, chairs, and passengers able to have a drivers eye view as well maybe..
Bigfinlach 2 years ago 2
I agree with you. Now theres no evidence of how these trains looked inside.
Sugababeslover 2 years ago
Yup... too late now. unless someone decides to make some good replicas... unlikely...

Strange that these trains were used on the Cathcart Route aswell. Was that near the end because old old old trains are used on those routes now lol!

I've been on one in February 2002, I must of been lucky that I have been on one of them.
What very interesting trains they were.
At least you can find one on the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway.

if you drive trains and hate them, i think you should get another job.
its train drivers with that sort of bad attitude that are bringing the transport industry into disrepute.

Queen St. I think. Last time I looked for the Mocha, was 1978; by then it was gone. Haven't been back in Scotland since 1989 (!)

If you play this back you will see signs of "Downs syndrome" in the other lady. Social niceties are not known character traits among sufferers.
