I like this show better than the Addams family and I like Bewitched better than I Dream of Jeannie. As a kid I thought all 4 were funny, but as I grew older I realized The Munsters and Bewitched obviously had better writers and much better rememberable episodes without all the extra slap stick and stubbling around for laughs found in IDOJ & the Addams Family. But I still enjoy watching all of them and wish TV Land would air the 60/70's shows more often.
@Tiny1bme Not sure if their writers were "better" but they were aiming for different audiences I suppose. The Munsters also had Universal behind them cause that is who owned all the famous movie monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein so this show had the actual backlots to film on and the actual makeup people who made the original films.
Umm peaceloveolivea...hi there.Sorry but The Munsters came out 1st so theres no way they copied the Addams Family.By the way,the year in the title above should say 1963 because thats when the Munsters debuted :)
@mikeysaur65 Naw the joke was that she was the only normal human in the family, and when boys would come over and meet her family, they'd be scared off...and she'd always blame it on herself being so ugly!
I dont get the whole culture of fanboys nowadays :( (or even back then) im a HUGE video game fanatic. Its the common thing nowadays to take a side (e.g ps3) and then slag off other consoles. Like i say im a game fan. I dont care what console its on..if its good ill play it lol It seems the same with some TV shows like this one. People will slagg off addams family or the munsters or compare them..... Why can't people just enjoy both for what they are!
The defining difference between the Munsters and the Addams Family is that the Munsters are ordinary people who look like monsters; the Addams Family are monsters who look like ordinary people.
@Takeshi357 WRONG! The Munsters are equally monsterous. How do you explain Herman and Lily having their 100th wedding anniversary in an episode? What normal couple marries for 100 years? I don't think ANY couple does. How do you explain Lily's description of a tossed salad involving a whole tin can of peaches? Who the heck would eat a fish ALIVE, as i saw in one episode?
Actually the filming of Addams family began in 1962 whereas the munsters filming began in 1963 so when the munsters first appeared Addams family was beginning its second season.
It doesn't matter if the minsters came first, I've never seen the munsters but it seems like a funny show, but I have to say the Addams family tops the munsters because the Addams family went on for a while and the munsters didn't p
@DominusLuna: Actually the Addams Family was around, though not as a TV show, long before the Munsters. And to counter your argument, I think BOTH shows are equally good.
@NoreasterProductions me too! I love both shows. Wish they would have merged, just for one tv movie. Like they're long lost cousins or something. Lurch and Herman are both Frankensteinian in appearance. Lily and Morticia are sort of similiar. Uncle Fester and Grandpa could make one great team, too!
THE ADDAMS FAMILY!!!! The Munsters are a mockery! They are just goons who look like monsters, and they lack character, unlike the Addamses. ADDAMS ALL THE WAY!
@trdidion What a beauty, ...why do people always have to compare Addams Fam. to Munsts...saying this one or that one's better, etc.,..can't they just be 2 different shows???
@Jsd8675 They started making all these different channels for specific types of programming. The old-school tv shows, like the Munsters, Sanford and Son, Dragnet, All in the Family, etc are on such channels as TV Land and ME TV
Yvonne DeCarlo got top billing because she was the biggest star of the time. She had several movie roles in the '50s, including Sephora, Moses' wife, in "The Ten Commandments".
always loved lily . had a crush on her still do im 54 yvonne decarlo va va voom . what a beautiful woman . ill always be amunsters fan till im to old to care . any one else a munster s fan. from polywog690 indiana , pa. jim stewarts hometown
I LOVE Yvonne's SULTRY SEXY look in the very beginning!! Very HOT looking morbid queen LOL even in black and white!! And DAMN what a great funny show it was as well!!
@epicmaddie - not quite accurate; while the actor, Fred Gwynne, was tall, the soles of his boots were made extra thick so he could appear even taller.
@Kelski1998 He also played the old man across the road in Pet Semetary. AND!!!! Get this...In a show that aired in the next half hour slot after the Munsters, 'Herman' and 'Grandpa' both starred together in a show called "Car 54, Where are You?" I was just a naive kid at the time, I couldn't believe how they could change their costumes and get into a cop car, and a different town, so quickly!!!!
@Kelski1998 It's been probably 40 years since I saw the show, and I don't know who Ooh Ooh Joe E Ross is, but Al Lewis was the older of the Car 54 duo. I should see if any of the episodes are on YouTube. You check it out, too, and let's compare notes
@Kelski1998 My mistake, it wasn't Al Lewis on the show. It was Joe E Ross. Well, that kinda crumbles my ages old 'apparent' memories!!! Kinda sucks getting old!!!!
From a time when TV didn't take itself seriously. In other words, when TV was fun and the entire family could watch. Love the Munster Coach and Drag-u-la! George Barris was (and remains) a custom car genius!

It's almost embarassing to pay my monthly cable bill, I'm endorsing all this crap by subscribing to what my cable provider prefers to offer.
This was my favourite comedy series as a kid. The later attempt to revive it was nowhere near as good. iTunes has all of the episodes available for download, but for some reason not as a set.
I MISS THE MUNSTERS AND THE ADAMS FAMILY!!! I GREW UP ON THESE SHOWS!!! I remember saturday morning my parents and I would sit around the tv and watch episode after episode of the Munsters and the Adams Family... classic Gothic type shows.... now that I think about it... these shows influenced me more than i thought!
@gallafey: Or cross them over. Have Wednesady & Eddie hit it off, have Marylin fall for one of the available Addams' bachelors, & pair off Grandmama Frump-Addams with Grandpa Munster. It'd be a hoot!
@MischiefMeerkat I believe the Addams Family came first. It was a comic strip that (according to Wikipedia) started in 1938 by cartoonist Charles Addams. The television series started in 1964.
The Munsters appears to be a made-for-TV sitcom using iconic "monsters" from prior movies. Not strictly a "rip-off", back in the '60s, the three main networks vied for viewers based on a formulaic set-up. When one network began airing "Superman", another network countered with "Batman", and so on....

@gallafey: Or cross them over. Have Wednesady & Eddie hit it off, have Marylin fall for one of the available Addams' bachelors, & pair off Grandmama Frump-Addams with Grandpa Munster. It'd be a hoot!

For years I remember having trouble telling this show from the Addams Family, besides the intro.. They're both awesome though.

Munsters vs. Addams Family. which one blatantly ripped off which?

@MischiefMeerkat I believe the Addams Family came first. It was a comic strip that (according to Wikipedia) started in 1938 by cartoonist Charles Addams. The television series started in 1964.
The Munsters appears to be a made-for-TV sitcom using iconic "monsters" from prior movies. Not strictly a "rip-off", back in the '60s, the three main networks vied for viewers based on a formulaic set-up. When one network began airing "Superman", another network countered with "Batman", and so on....
