You can use any colors you like, of course. :D If your doll has a face-up, test pastels on an unobtrusive spot on your doll (like the head-cap) to try to match the colors. If you are doing your own face-up, youcan just use many of the same colors.
You can seal your work without disassembling your doll. Leaving the doll assembled or dis-assembling the doll is a matter of choice, so do whatever works best for you. :D
This was VERY helpful, and beautiful! I wish to own a bjd soon and am fervertly researching the How To-s. Question - the doll i'm starting with is only avaiable in white or fleshtone. Is there a way to tan the whole body & face of the doll B-4 the detailed blush & face-ups? And which skintone is better to tan with? And can you do this to soft bodied obitsus? Please - I would REALLY like to know.
@Sovajin It's loads easier just to buy a tanned doll, but if you really want to you could take it apart and airbrush the whole thing... fleshtone would be easier because you're starting with a darker color. You can blush obitsus if you want but I don't know of a sealer that can be used on vinyl...
@MsKiraKat Thanx so much for the reply! I WISH i could buy one already tanned, but they are SO expensive b/c of their color! And sometimes, they no longer have or never or never will have that color avaliable. Its why i asked;thinking it might be easier. Oh! I didn't think soft bodied meant vinyl. Hmmm. R u sure? Wonder what happens if you seal it with a reg. sealer anyway?
@Sovajin Yes, I'm 100% sure that obitsus, like the Dollfie Dream, are vinyl. Mr.Super Clear is okay for vinyl, but the problem is that it costs about twenty bucks because you have to buy it online and have it shipped. Testor's Dull Cote is more readily available, but it has been known to eat away at the vinyl and not dry properly. Bobobie has beautiful tanned dolls (look at owner pics, not the ones on the Bobobie website(horrible)) for an amazing price (BJD-wise, LOL) if money is an issue. ^_^
@MsKiraKat Sorry for the late reply! That statement 'Eating away at the vinyl' that gave me chills! *Shudder! What a horrible image! Thanx for the heads up! Guess its Mr. S.C. then. I don't mind waiting tho. I'm still a LONG way off before i can get one! So I'm stocking up on necessary supplies. Thank you SO much for the advice! You are my guiding light! My guru! *giggles!* I hope i'm able to catch you the next time I may be confused and have any other questions. Once again, Thanx! *HUUUGS!* :DD
Testor's or Model Masters (which is made by the same company) can be used. Some people prefer them, others prefer other brands.
For pastels, you can use any brand, but they need to be pastels with high quality pigments. You don't need a whole box. You can start with just 4-light red, red, and a lighter and dark brown, (I like raw & burnt umber). You can buy single pastels in art stores & online. DON't get chalk pastels, oil pastels, or chalk. You want soft artist quality pastels.
Yes, it's essentially the same as regular Mr. Super Clear except it has some UV light protection. Many people prefer it because they worry about their dolls yellowing.
Mr. Super Clear Flat Lacquer is the most common sealer used on resin BJDs. (I get mine from junkyspot. )To see more about the materials, check out the" Soft & Natural No Paint Face-ups" video. There is also a Body Blushing a Boy Doll" video. I will be making a new face-up video too, with 2 different heads since I have new software that allows me to make videos with better picture quality.
I had recently made my own BJD doll, but it turned out really bad. The feet are too big, there's stratches on it from me sanding it down, I totally forgot to make the joints. So, I was wondering if I could send it to you, since you look like you know your stuff, to fix it. I'm really desperate, Please?
It MAY be the colors you are using that's the problem. Pastels always look lighter on the surfaces they cover because the color underneath (the doll resin) shows through. You might want to try a darker pastel color than you are using. Test your colors on a sprayed head-cap and see if you can find a color closer to your desired shade. If you really need a darker effect than a pastel can give you, you might have to switch to paint. I tend to use paint sparingly as I like a more 'blended' look.
This is kind of weird because I have a friend named tara and she looks like that :O [Her face does]

can I also fix the face up/body blushing with mr super clear flat uv cut?
Is it the same?
